I didn't purchase anything else but the coffee but my order was made at a reasonable time. The location is convenient as it's right off Bloor Street West (steps away from the Bloor line subway), and the inside is SO cozy, beautiful, and charming - like walking into someone's very neat and inviting home with a lot of natural sunlight, nicely arranged furniture, and tons of books. This is truly a book lover's haven. The main floor has the cafe where you can order small bites such as muffins, cookies, pastries, and drinks (tea, coffee, etc.). There are seating areas all throughout the floor, including a small table near the front that is ideal for socializing or chatting over drinks and snacks. Book shelves are spread out on both floors. The upper floor has washrooms, a long island table, and various rooms and seating areas. My favourite is the lounge area / room with the fireplace - soo cozy with lots of books to choose from. As this place is newly opened, all of their books are also brand new. They are organized very neatly, labelled similar to the labelling system you'd find in bookstores and libraries. The book selection is quite large - both fiction and non-fiction. You can search for a book by title or ISBN number on their website. All the books in Book Bar can't be borrowed (not a library); they are meant to be read and enjoyed on site. Some are displayed for sale. I like that they have a laptop-free policy in the evenings and weekends, so the space is used for what it's truly meant for - reading and enjoying books. They hold monthly events such as book launches, author meet-and-greets, book club meetings, and other social events for literary enthusiasts. An area on the upper floor is reserved for the Book Club meetings. The only downside (at the time when I was there) was that the music on the upper floor was a bit too loud for reading. As a reading space, there should be no music, or have classical / instrumental music with low volume. I couldn't concentrate on the reading with high-volume lyrical music in the background. This is a very lovely space. I hope it stays and sticks around for a long time.

Following a short flight of stairs I was led down into a wee little basement gallery. This brightly lit and warm space is serves double-duty as a gallery and studio space. The lovely lasses working there told me they are planning on hosting workshops on screenprinting and lithography. Sounds neat. The gallery, though small, was full of oil paintings. They are presently showcasing the work of Kari Minchin, though they change up the artist frequently. There were also some cool gift-ables, like handmade notebooks, greeting cards, and these truly brilliant screen-printed calendars. When I was there they had just put out a limited edition of the calendars which featured artistic embellishment and accents on each month. Those will probably get snapped up pretty quickly. A very pretty shop. I need to bring my kid sister here. Obligatory Title Pun: CARVE out some time and get DOWN here. Menu Readability: Their guestbook in a graph-paper notebook was a nice touch. Need to mention: Check the calendar on their website for events and workshops. What this place teaches me about myself: Is there an Association of Twee? I'd like to be the treasurer.

My first CMYE! (Stands for "Community Manager Yelp Event"!)…read more This event transported me back to the days of art class! ... and printing presses! I haven't done any "crafty" hands-on artwork since high school! So this was exciting! The studio is this cute quaint haven tucked downstairs at one of the tiny shops along Queen St. West. The venue is an extension of Artscape. We were immediately greeted with warmth and enthusiasm by the instructors, who happen to be local artists; Jessica Bromley Bartram, Pam Lobb, and Erin Candela. The instructors were extremely sweet, friendly and informative about the process, and the use of the presses. Every student there learned quickly, and used the machines it like a pro! Provided for us were textured paper, ribbon, lace, q-tips, popsicle sticks, and paints in the colors of blue, red, and green. I'm sure other colors are available upon request. Then it was time to get dirty! (Oh behave! You know what I mean!) Lessons today were Letter Presses and Monoprints! I was so delighted to see the vintage press machines! We commented on how ODD it felt to create anything hands-on these days! Sigh ... The Letter Press is the use of block letters and characters (think large metal block stencils) to create type on paper. Monoprinting meant creating positive & negative shadows & color to create a pattern. We used fabrics & paints & other scrap materials to etch patterns on an ink medium. I thoroughly enjoyed the light music playing in the background! Nice soothing touch to add to the ambiance! Given the small space, it felt spacious with it's open concept, all-white minimal decor and bright lighting! For such a small space, the maximum group size is 8 people. Any more and there wouldn't be enough room, or time, for everyone to enjoy every station! Cost is typically $25 for a class, materials is extra. Our class tonite was $35 per person, including material. Yay! (NOTE: CASH ONLY) I felt I didn't have enough time, but that just means I was having TOO much fun! I highly recommend letting your inner artist loose here! It's a fabulous way to spend a relaxed and inspired afternoon with the boyfriend, (or in my case, husband), mom, sister, or catching up with an old friend! I'm so happy Toronto has this hidden gem! As a Black woman, I was looking forward to supporting a fellow African business, and I was incredibly disappointed with the customer service. I'll mention the customer service, atmosphere, accessibility access, and coffee + pastries in my review. There was only 1 barista making the drinks and also running the register, so I understand it can be busy. However, the barista spent most of the time talking to her friend. There was only myself and one other person in line, so we just waited patiently. When I went to order, I mentioned that I was so happy to support an Ethiopian business, as I'm Kenyan. The barista looked confused, she said, "are you sure? You don't look like it. Are you half?". I was stunned. I said no, my parents and my grandparents are both born in Nairobi, Kenya. She repeated, "oh, you don't look like it." Who are you to tell someone they don't look like their ethnicity or their heritage? The barista was also a Black woman, and I couldn't believe she spoke to me like this. I was stunned. I quickly ordered an iced vanilla latte and a small pastry. It took a little while for her to make it, but I patiently waited. The pastry was very dry and I would not recommend their pastries. While I was adding sugar to my iced coffee, at their table, the lid slipped and my iced coffee fell, on myself, and some fell on their table. The barista looked very annoyed at me, but she asked if I was okay. I apologized immensely, and I started to clean it up with the napkins they had available. I said I was okay, and I kindly asked her if she could please make me a new one. The barista audibly said, "ugh.." I couldn't believe it. Really? I cleaned up the iced coffee completely, while I was also holding multiple bags. Thankfully, the barista made me a new one, and I thanked her again. I quickly left the store. The vanilla iced coffee and pastry came to around $12 CAD. The iced coffee was okay, nothing memorable. There are about 12-15 seats and tables in the coffee shop, people were talking and catching up. The windows are open to the street, so it is quite loud inside. Definitely not a quiet working space. Accessibility note: There are multiple steps to walk into the coffee shop. There is no ramp. Not wheelchair friendly. I would not return.
