AMHS has insufficient academic challenges, low curriculum difficulty, lack of critical thinking, students dare not question teachers or ask sharp questions, and the overall learning atmosphere is relatively passive. Attendance problems are evident and the level of commitment to their studies is low, with many students only cramming for exams and lacking sustained academic commitment. The campus atmosphere is fickle, lacking in deep communication, and lunch hours are more focused on entertainment or gossip than academic discussion. Some students behave mean and bad, and even show unreasonable attitude in honors courses, forming an unhealthy campus atmosphere. AMHS has limited resources and lacks the atmosphere to enter top universities, which puts students at a disadvantage in the competitiveness of further study. The quality of extracurricular activities is low, the participation in academic activities is not high, and the student's involvement is insufficient. Overall, the AMHS campus has a loose culture, a low academic atmosphere and a low social level. As a student who transferred from AMHS to a private high school in downtown Seattle, I must say--AMHS is truly worse than an average public school! In every aspect, it simply cannot compare to other private schools in greater downtown Seattle. I cannot compare someone who can concisely summarize a criminal case in three sentences and write in-depth, multi-perspective analyses of the U.S. election for the school newspaper to someone who, in an American history class discussion on feminism, could only exclaim: "Come on, we are women!" I cannot compare a group of students who eagerly continue discussing mock trial notes after class and analyze capitalism through Argentina's economic history to those who, before finals, can only frantically Google answers. I cannot compare AMHS's pre-packaged, greasy cafeteria food (Panda Express, Costco pizza) to the organic, locally sourced meals prepared at our school. I cannot compare students who fearlessly challenge authority, raise sharp yet insightful critiques in front of teachers, and pursue truth and reason to AMHS students who submit to authority and speak without sincerity. I cannot compare the steady, meaningful Capital Hill dates at our school to the unstable, ambiguous situationships at AMHS. I cannot compare the humble and kind student who got into Dartmouth to the mean-spirited, irrational girl in AMHS's Honors Pre-Calculus class. I cannot compare the efficient, warm, and supportive environment at our school to AMHS's indifference toward its students. I cannot compare AMHS students, some of whom miss half a semester of classes, to our school, where every student shows up daily without fail. I cannot compare students at our school, who engage in lunchtime discussions about global economics and politics, to AMHS students, who skip class at every opportunity. Since transferring, I no longer waste my energy worrying about a history class in which talent has nowhere to shine or about a hypocritical and indifferent school administration. When I walked up to the Main Hall's college acceptance board, I finally understood--any college admission result from our school would be seen as mind-blowing at AMHS. I feel ashamed of my past short-sightedness and emotional attachment! AMHS is not a place where you can receive a quality education or flaunt any so-called "privilege" or "superiority."
