As an avid golfer, I'm happy that this golf course is a short drive from our condominium at Portage Point Inn. I remember driving in M-22 and seeing it being developed in 2000. I had no idea it would become one of the top-rated public courses in the Country. I could go on and on about the many accolades and nuisances that this course includes, but I have to mention that it has the best 19th hole anywhere. Grab an adult beverage and meet me at the Adirondack chairs behind the 18th hole green. If you're lucky enough to be playing on a Friday or Saturday afternoon, you'll be greeted by an authentic bagpipe player at 6:00-sundown. There's just no place like it anywhere. read more

We had our tee-time at 2pm and was able to finish our round with the sun going down over Lake Michigan. We were close to 6pm when we heard from the 18th fairway the bagpipes begin to chime and what an experience that was to see and hear that even after we got off the 18th green! I felt like I was back in Scotland. After our round, we ordered a pint of beer and hung out outside on the patio and watched the sunset glisten off the ocean floor and drift off into the atmosphere. I highly recommend playing this original course if you're in town without question. read more

Arcadia Bluffs provides the best views in Michigan golf. Lake Michigan features prominently while the rolling hills and fescue provide awesome visuals. Each hole is a great experience. I have never taken so many photos at a golf course. When it comes to conditions, we found the course to be more than adequate on a very hot, dry day. The greens rolled extremely fast and could be very difficult depending on where your approach landed. I recommend paying for the greens book at the clubhouse. Overall it is one of my top 5 in Michigan for fun and playability. The price is definitely high for Michigan golf, but I think it is worth the cost of admission. I genuinely do not know where to start. People say Disney is the most magical place on Earth, this guy says no way! The most magical place on earth is located in Arcadia, MI and it's called Arcadia Bluffs. This place blew my socks off literally. I had to go to the car to get another pair of socks because my socks got blown off so far. This place is incredible and exceeded all expectations. For starters, you pull up to the clubhouse and are instantly greeted by my friend Mr. Lake Michigan and boy is he beautiful. Then you check in with Chris in a beautiful clubhouse and restaurant with incredible views of the course and lake. Then you golf and boy does this course not disappoint. Each hole we kept saying "there's no way the views will get better than this hole" and by golly did it just keep getting better. The greens are fast and true and the course is in great shape. Each hole feels completely different than any others and is a great challenge. It was so much fun on #18 coming back up the hill with people watching by the clubhouse in the white chairs with drinks. Now for the dining. Connor was our server and he was awesome! Great bread, great filet, great potatoes, great asparagus, very happy customer. S/O to the bagpipes guy with an incredible performance while the sun is setting with drinks in hand looking over the beautiful property and lake! In regards to the complaints about pace of place in prior reviews, this ain't your local municipal course to buzz around. There's a reason rounds and groups take a while, they're enjoying the views!! There's no reason to rush this round. Everyone there was in a great mood, so don't be a grinch and plan ahead. SOUTH COURSE REVIEW ONLY I was under impressed with this course. It was in EXCELLENT shape. Nothing was out of place, greens were very firm and very fast....and VERY difficult. Fairways, perfect. Tee boxes, perfect. So why only 3 stars? Boring.... very boring. I've played the original course several times and this one was so lame in comparison. Granted, you don't have the views, but there is very little elevation. and just nothing to it. I'm sure the intention is to mimic a course out of Scotland, and if I was in Scotland, maybe it would be cool, but i wasn't. The staff was inadequate on the day we played. Snack bar wasn't staffed to handle the demand. There was only one guy handling the pro shop, and the bar wasn't open. We teed off at 8am and we didn't see a cart girl until the back 9. If you have a choice between the two, the original course is the pick, hands down. One unusual thing i could add.... on the back 9, they have one of the largest greens i have ever played in my life. read more

I was really disappointed in the service for dinner and the response from the manager. I ordered a drink that was supposed to be gluten free vodka. When I finished dinner I went to order another drink and the bartender told me they didn't have any gluten free and they havent for over one month. I was lied to and charged for something I never received. the only response from a manager was sorry and don't hit a deer on the way home. obviously someone inexperienced and lack of human empaty. My wife and I had a late tee time 5pm We didn't finish the round. We got to 16. We were hungry and decided to see if we could get a table at the Bluffs restaurant. To our surprise it was booked till 9:30 pm They said that they could seat us but we waited for a little to long where it was uncomfortable and we were looking around for a waiter. We spoke to the manager and he was on it big time. He was fabulous. I understand that restaurants are short staffed and we were trying to be patient. He kicked ass. Food was fabulous. Everyone had a great meal NY steak Walleye Steak stir fry Drinks were good bartender really fun We just had to wait a bit but well worth it Thanks everyone BTW. This golf course is very challenging - do not expect to enjoy yourself unless you are a much better than average golfer. The views are obviously amazing but I personally think that you can pay much less money to enjoy yourself on other great courses in the area. This course has always been on my bucket list and I'm glad that I finally went so I don't have to wonder anymore if I've been missing out - spoiler - I haven't . The course condition wasn't anything to get excited about- the fairways and greens seemed to be in the same condition as my local municipal course. A somewhat rambling review......Travelled to Arcadia Bluffs for five days of golf and relaxation. It was early June so still a bit of a chill and lots of breeze, daily. Beautiful setting, overlooking Lake Michigan, gorgeous views. The hotel itself and the rooms, very nicely appointed. Small guest rooms but nicely furnished and great views from the lake view side. There is no small store for incidentals so don't forget anything because the facility is fairly isolated and there are very few stores to stock up or get missing items. No pool, no fitness center; this is a golf destination venue so don't confuse it with a result with broad-based amenities. You won't find vending machines or convenience shops if you want a snack or beverage or a bottle of Aleve; they are available in the dining room or bars. The restaurant is terrific, excellent staff, loved the food, high quality well prepared and a nice variety for all meals. Golf.....if you are a mid-handicapper, say 15-20, be prepared to add a dozen or more strokes to your regular game. Perhaps 20 more strokes for those mid-handicapers who will be counting All their strokes. Your expectations for great golf should be tempered with the reality of very challenging Fast undulating greens, deep rough and some fairways that have an abundance of divots in the well played areas. If you are an average golfer, do not play the white tees much less any farther back. Yes, the gold tees are 'only' 5700 yards but all you can handle if you are a mid-handicapper. The Bluffs is a far nicer course to play than the South. No views on the South course, lots of challenges, in some way harder than the Bluffs, but even though the South is a bit less expensive, stick with the Bluffs unless you just want variety. At $250 for a round of golf and $400 for lake view rooms, the Bluffs is not inexpensive by any means but it is probably fairly priced given the quality of the venue. My best advice, don't go if you are frustrated by not golfing up to your normal scores or golfing quickly because rounds will take 4 1/2 to 5 hours or more. The play can be slow so take time to enjoy the views, live in the scenic moment and take a deep breath. It's a golf resort that I enjoyed a lot, but will probably not go back to more than this one time. Definitely worthy of four stars on Yelp but that is based on the quality of the venue, the service, the friendliness of the staff, the gorgeous views, the relaxing amenities and the location isolation if you would like to get away from it all. read more

Played this course twice, both times on Wednesdays. It used to be (still may) that Wednesday, ladies played for half the usual green fee which helped. This layout is tough to get to, but if you're in the neighborhood, and have the funds, it is a must play. On par with Bay Harbor, Jones Signature at Treetops,or any Michigan top-tier golf course. Didn't get a chance to play the course but had dinner with a large party. There isn't many places in the world with a view like this place. The evening was perfect, not a cloud anywere. Food is good. The perfect place to take a date, sit out on the lawn chairs, watch the golfers finish up, and take in the view with a cocktail. If it weren't for the 5 hour round, this would be a 5 star place. Gorgeous course and view, magnificent clubhouse. Guests not interested in the same thing as myself will likely have an exceptional experience. I really only have the one complaint (see below). The golf course is magnificent. You have a view of Lake Michigan from every hole. It is easy to see why it is rated as the #1 public course in Michigan (#3 overall). Although pricey, there are much more expensive resorts that aren't near as good. The Lodge itself was gorgeous, incredible accommodations, spectacular views of the lake, very friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was very good. They restaurant takes a farm-to-market approach (not as successfully as the top restaurants in Traverse City), but it was good, and not ridiculously expensive. And the view is priceless. It is not that I disagree with the other reviewers that gave five stars, but to me, I didn't get the whole package, although I paid for it. If you are just going for the golf, the view, or the restaurant, I doubt you will be disappointed. If you want the whole package, I recommend you insist on checking in before 1:00 pm, and make them ensure you a full round. I really only have one complaint, but regrettably it is pretty big to me. I booked a room and a round of golf. The plan was I would check in, play a round, have dinner watching the sunset, have a restful night sleep, and a good breakfast the next morning. The problem is, even though this is a $500 experience, it simply can't be done. Check in is 3:00 p.m., it is a five plus hour round. If you check in at 3:00 pm, you simply do not have time to change, warm up, finish the round, and have dinner at sunset. I ended up playing 16 holes, 2 holes in the dark, and couldn't play #18. The restaurant was then closed. To me this is a fatal flaw in the management. I complained on the complaint card, and I was awarded with a $100 gift card. I had a nice conversation with one of the managers. In short, I was impressed at how they handled things. I recently had a similar problem at Whistling Straits (rooms not ready before golf), so I am afraid it is endemic to golf resorts. Unlike Whistling Straits, Arcadia Bluffs, apologized, offered me something of value, and took care of the situation. I look forward to redeeming the gift certificate. I still see the 5 hour round as an issue, and I recommend that those wanting to get two rounds of golf in be assertive in regards to the check in time. I was assured that if i asked I would have been allowed to check in early. read more

I am completely in love with every aspect of this place. The location: unbeatable. Looking down on bluffs over Lake Michigan, there literally is no better view anywhere in the entire state. The dining room: fantastic fresh, local food. They do fish extremely well. Their salads are great. Their sandwiches are pretty strong too. Or you can just get a glass from their ample wine selection while you watch the sun set. The golf course: surreal. Beautiful, absurdly long holes, with exquisitely manicured fairways and championship caliber heather on every hole forcing you to really tighten up your game. The greens are hilariously massive and extremely quick. Tee boxes are elevated and just about every hole has a gorgeous view of either the lake or just the landscape they've created. Oh, and the wind usually picks up pretty good. It's not cheap at $180 a round, but its worth it. Even those getting totally abused by the course will enjoy themselves if they can just appreciate where they are. The event space: these guys put on an amazing rehearsal dinner for us in September. The glass room off the main dining area is a perfect function room and lets you take in all of their excellent food and service while watching the sun go down over the water. The hotel: Perhaps the only piece that might not be worth the price. The rooms are gorgeous, the beds are comfortable, all the fixtures are brand new and of course the view from the lake side balcony is ridiculous. But $360 a night is a bit steep. I'm glad I spent my wedding night here, but will not be sending out of towners to the hotel next time I bring them in for golf. Nevertheless, a great night's stay. I've never played 12 holes before so I'm not sure why they would rain check me for only 12. They tried to say that was industry standard but in all my years of golf I have always been given a rounded up to the nearest 9 rain check. Industry standard? I don't think so. First time and LAST time to play !!!!!!!! On vacation with 7 golf league buddies that are returning for the 6th time. I couldn't wait to play and couldn't wait to buy a pull over. On hole #3, the GPS on our carts showed, 6 minutes behind. Within a minute, we had a ranger on us. He stated, "Need you guys to be aware you're 6 minutes behind and need to keep pace". Our response was, sir, there is no one behind us for a hole and a half and our other group was in front of us maybe 250 yards !! On the tee box of #4, another ranger. He also yelled at us and we also responded the same. At the turn, we were asked to hurry up, get your drinks/food and go. Then on hole #14, we were greeted by a Pro Shop Asst. who ended up following us shot by shot until tee box of 17. We asked, "did we do something wrong ?". He responded "no, I was asked to help move you along". By this time, our average behind time was 3-7 minutes ( still no one behind us for at least 1 full hole ) !!! Never again will I/we drive 3 1/2 hours, pay $190 to play Arcadia Bluffs, EVER, and heck NO, I didn't buy the pull over in the Pro Shop Boo to you, Tuesday Players read more

Our food was delicious, the wine excellent and the view spectacular. The service was sub-par. We waited 10 minutes before one of the staff asked if we had been helped. She checked and was not told she was our server. We waited another 10 minutes for our wine. There were only four other tables. The food came quickly but the salmon salad had no dressing. Server brought the dressing five minutes later. Then 3/4 through our meal, an employee started mowing the lawn (we were on the terrasse) releasing gas fumes and loud motor noise. After finishing he used a leaf blower also releasing more fumes and very loud noise. We left before finishing our food. Our lunch tab for two was $78 + tip. read more

Played here on a weekend with my husband - the views are breathtaking and there are definitely major challenges like the huge bunkers and super fast unforgiving greens. This reminded me of Harborside golf course - all in all, very nice....the staff was very hospitable and we had an enjoyable time. One less than ideal was the breakfast - my breakfast sandwich was cold - both the egg and the sausage rendering it inedible for me. My husband was told that they had just started doing breakfast. The next day, forgoing the food it was pretty chilly out so I ordered a hot chocolate - it took 10 minutes to make and it was still lukewarm. Very disappointing. These two elements didn't mar our golfing experience but didn't convince us to have dinner or lunch there afterwards.... read more

Oh where to start? Arcadia, I wanted you to be great. I did. I wanted you to live up to the hype. I wanted you to overwhelm me. Unfortunately you did not. In fact, you underwhelmed me. I'll start with the good: beautiful clubhouse, nice views, good practice area, great greens. The bad: When you tell players your expected pace of play is 4:45 you're just inviting them to play 5:30+ hour rounds...and guess what? They do. We teed off with what should have been plenty of time to finish before sunset only to be disappointed by darkness setting in on #16. But what about rangers you ask? Non-existant, a myth. Paid $140 for 16 holes, and it was by far the worst value of our trip. Overpriced and terrible service? Check and check. We arrived an hour before our round, thinking that we had plenty of time to check out the clubhouse, pro shop, and grab some food before heading to the first tee. We go to the pro shop, intent on buying a bag tag as a souvenir. How much? $26. You're kidding me right Arcadia. Royal County Down, you know, the #1 course in the world, charges $20. Royal Portrush, you know host of the 2019 Open Championship, charges $18. So we moved on from that and said hey lets grab some hot dogs. After being scoffed at by the bartender/waiter as if we were second class citizens (which everyone who worked there seemed to be condescending and aloof aside from the guy who provided transport from the parking lot to the clubhouse) we were charged $46 for 1 hot dog and 3 brats, which is, well, insane. A half hour goes by, which by the way at this point is getting very close to our tee time, and the items that take about 10 minutes to cook are still not out. I go ask about their status and am told "they'll be out when they're done." Cool, thanks, I'll just go f*** myself. Finally got them about 10 minutes before our tee time, had to scarf them down, and then were told we would lose our spot if we did not get to the tee on time. Lastly, the course is okay. Don't get me wrong, it was in good condition (can't say great because the walls of many bunkers are literally crumbling), but my main problem with Arcadia is that if you take this course, put it in the middle of the state, next to the Loop or Forest Dunes...it barely makes top 10 in the state and certainly does not rate ahead of either of the aforementioned. #s 11, 12, and 13 are all that you see in pictures and there are good views down to Lake Michigan on every hole...but it's the same view: rich green fairways, brown fescue, and water beyond. Sunset was beautiful, but the water is so far down and removed from the course, there is no immediacy like you feel at say Pebble Beach, or even Bay Harbor, and because of where it is situated along the coastline (with no peninsula jutting out) there are no real views down the coast when you are on the lakeside holes. It's a nice course, with a good layout, but for the steep fee they charge for everything, the poor service, the aloof attitude from their team members, and the downright terrible pace of play, it unfortunately fell at the bottom of the list of courses we played over the weekend which included (by order of overall quality) The Loop, Bay Harbor, Forest Dunes, and Arthur Hills. Arcadia, I wanted you to be great, I did, but you fell woefully short of that and for that reason I will not be back. read more

Had a wonderful Labor Day weekend get away to Arcadia Bluffs. The Bluffs course was on my husband's checklist. Golf was challenging and amazing, as expected. We had a bit of a rain delay on Saturday and the pro shop handled it expertly. We stayed on site and the rooms were clean and very nice. The staff at the bar and the restaurant were very attentive and friendly. We especially enjoyed our banter with both Jasons and Amber at the bar in the main dining room. Jessica took great care of us for lunch and breakfast. Grounds are beautiful and the sunsets are a must see. We felt the prices were reasonable when compared to other high end golf courses around the U.S. Pretty sure we will be back! read more

I had a fabulous lunch in the dining room, took a short lesson and hit some practice balls for a perfect afternoon! it was a little bit of a windy day even though sunny, so I decided to eat lunch inside but at the windows for a beautiful view. Staff was very accommodating and friendly with white tablecloth service even though I was dressed for golf! I had the cheese plate for an appetizer which was enough for two or three people with three cheeses, berries, pecans and pine nuts. Then a very tasty chicken salad sandwich on croissant which sounds simple but was done with perfect balance, real mayonnaise and dried cherries. Finished up a great meal with a perfect cup of tea and they let me read at the table for awhile before my lesson time. Nice, quiet spot and a cozy fireplace at the end of the room. Had a half hour lesson with Zach who was very patient with me (a beginner) and we spent our time working on my short game. Fantastic putting, chipping and pitching facilities! And then I hit a small bucket on the deriving range, where you can just scoop up your own baskets from a huge cart full of balls. Even though you cannot see the lake over there, this is a beautiful practice area! Arcadia Bluffs is a great place to spend the day... or several days! Will definitely come back soon. read more

My husband and I went to Arcadia over Labor Day weekend to celebrate our anniversary. It was meant to be a quick get away from Chicago but once we got there, we felt like we were a world away! It was absolutely amazing! Everywhere you look, the views were amazing. The course was stunning, club house and hotel were so clean, bright and beautiful. The bed was more comfortable than our bed at home, we didn't want to leave! My only regret was not staying longer. I wish we stayed 2 nights and played the course twice. The round of golf moved a bit slow, but we didn't mind... it was the most beautiful course we've ever played so having to wait on the tee box for a couple of minutes was a nice way to take in the views and appreciate the course without feeling rushed. Food was amazing - we had 3 meals there, lunch and dinner the day we arrived and breakfast the next morning before we left. All 3 were delicious! We didn't mind eating at the same restaurant 3 times with views so beautiful. Finally, to top off our trip - I had forgot my expensive electronic toothbrush in the room and my husband forgot a pair of shorts and belt. I didn't even have a chance to call the hotel after to ask them to send it back when a box arrived at my home with our forgotten belongings. They sent it back to us without us even asking. I've stayed other places and when I've forgotten something, they charge my credit card to send it back. Not at Arcadia - they went above and beyond without even asking. This may seem like something small but I was so happy when the box arrived and it saved me the phone call and expense of sending it back. We will without a doubt be going back to Arcadia... it has become our #1 mid-west vacation spot! I can't wait until they build the spa too - I'll be there ASAP! read more

So let me preface my review by saying that I'm a 2 HCP and have played Whistling Straits, Pebble Beach, Spanish Bay and Torrey Pines in the last 3 years. I think all of these courses take great advantage of the land and sea (lake) setting and are in a similar class (at least for arguments sake). So here we go... I'll start with the golf... Great driving range and short game facility. There isnt a single flat spot on the putting green by the range so I would advise you avoid that one all together before your round. Use the putting green in front of the clubhouse or you'll be frightened to death before your round even starts... But then again, the downfall of the course IMO are those stinkin greens! I played two rounds 7:50am and 1:50pm. I walked in the morning and took a caddy who was helpful but so used to carrying for 18 handicappers that he cost me two shots a side. I found the walk to be tough. It's hilly of course but there are some pretty good hikes from greens to tees (from 10 to 11 and 11 to 12 especially). The layout of the course is fair and really alot of fun. You have to pick your spots to be aggressive and you definitely have to know where to miss it. Which brings me to my issue with the course... The GREENS. I dont mind speed (running around 11) and I dont mind undulation but some of these are just kinda lame. Swails and slopes are tons of fun when you can utilize them or even when they're penal when you get out of position but the challenge they should present is that they require you to hit a great shot to get out of trouble. Unfortunately some of these greens (and pins they choose) are designed to make sure you take a beating. I don't pretend to be a professional golfer by any means but I'm a darn good player and there were a few holes where I walked off just shaking my head. Let me name them (front middle flag on 9, back left flag on 10, back right flag on 11, back left flag on 15, the WORST middle right flag on 16 and 18 green i suspect too). The best example is 16. I played the back tees so #16 was playing 476 yds. I hit a 310 yard drive down the hill so I've got a 9 iron into a section of the green right over the bunker that is about 4yds wide and 6 yds deep but truly impossible to hold. Any miss leaves you with an up and over putt from 30+ feet. You just have to see it to really grasp it but trust me... simply dumb. The shame of it is that the course doesnt need the gimmicks. It's hard enough putting on big vague greens and the landscape is ridiculously beautiful. IMO the some of the goofiness hurts the class of the place but aside from that it's a great track. It's more scenic than Whistling Straits and Spanish Bay combined but as a true golf experience, the other two are much truer tests. I had lunch and dinner at the restaurant and both were great. I echo all the other comments about what an unbelievable privilege it is to sit on the balcony and hear the bag pipes play as the sunsets... Truly amazing, impressive, relaxing and breath-taking. The food was really good as well. I love great soups and their Cream of Mushroom was unreal! It's pricey for sure but the view is worth the upcharge for food. Lastly, I found the staff to be the highest quality and level of professionals. They really bring alot of value to the experience. Awesome people! Word on the grounds up there is that they are looking to expand which means the price-tag will likely being moving north as well. I'd go back if my schedule allowed but I'm not dying to make the drive north again anytime soon. On the other hand if I got a letter in the mail saying they redesigned the greens and softened some of the slopes, I'd pick this place over just about anywhere. read more
