Generally not the greatest naturopath/functional medicine/alternative provider I've seen. Was a…read moregood start and opened my eyes to this being an option, but quickly realized this was not the provider for me. Specifically, misinterpreted testing results of a breath test for SIBO, and I actually corrected her based on really simple Googling on my part, and she confirmed my correction (which didn't actually make me confident in my own answer, but did make me unconfident in her, in general). Also general issues w/ scheduling.

I have been a client/patient of Liz Cavin's since her beginnings here in Helena in 2006. In the beginning, she was helpful, able to assist with standard and easily diagnosable health issues. She diagnosed me with Hashimoto's but that was the end of her ability to treat me consistently and over time. Most recently, I developed more complicated issues such as heightened anxiety, sleeplessness/insomnia and increased dietary sensitivities. I believed these and other more severe symptoms were all related to my Hashimoto's but she did not and performed expensive tests that only showed where my anxiety, for example, was reflected but not WHY. Time and time again, Liz was unable to properly diagnose whatever issue was challenging for her. She did not research or explore possibilities and options for me as she proposed - which is what a Holistic doctor does and she clearly did not! She also did not do ANY follow-up with me regarding tests (such as complicated adrenal testing) or my expressed concerns, curiosity, and suggestions about my conditions. I always had to call her office for follow-up information. Unfortunately, her receptionist, Carey, is not only poorly suited for her position of working with people, but is also highly incompetent. Liz would never acknowledge my fair complaints obviously based on my experience and would just try to proclaim Carey's abilities (which are what, exactly) and dismiss my concerns. In addition, I would call, leave messages, or make simple requests to Carey and would be consistently made to wait for unacceptable amounts of time for simple requests OR she would simple "forget" to pass on my questions or deliver information to Liz. Over a period of 6 months to a year, Liz dropped the ball on me and blatantly dismissed and thus disrespected my health concerns for what seems like unethical and unprofessional reasons - rather than be professional and tell me she is unable to help me due to her lack of knowledge and experience, she ignored my requests and any important follow-up. Anyone familiar with the auto-immune condition of Hashimoto's and concurrent "leaky gut"/food sensitivity problems knows that staying on top of this health condition is absolutely ESSENTIAL. As an educated patient, being ignored or dismissed by the doctor responsible for properly treating such health conditions is completely unacceptable and very disturbing. Here's an example: Recently, we did a blood test for my Hashimoto's condition (at my suggestion). She received the results within a week and did not call me. Another week went by and I CALLED HER. She was overly nice on the phone, explaining that she hadn't called me because she had been "putting out fires all week." Then she said that she wouldn't be able to see me or discuss the lab results the following week because she would be out of town (picking up a car). She then told me that she would not be able to see me the next week when she would be back in her office because she had clean things up in her office. THEN, she read me some of the test results over the phone...none of which I really understood. As she read the information, she would tell me that she didn't know why some numbers meant or why they were elevated, for example. She also said that she didn't really know what the test truly showed because she hadn't compared it with the most recent, previous blood test. ALOT of "I don't know" OVER THE PHONE. I think it is very unprofessional and unfair to the patient to read results of any test over the phone because not only does the patient not see the numbers the doctor is referring to, but when numbers out of the so-called normal ranges are told, this can be upsetting and disconcerting - not understanding what the out-of-range numbers are reflecting can be disturbing. After this unhelpful conversation, I was supposed to wait another 2 weeks to meet with her in person to go over the test. A full 4 weeks of unnecessary waiting for important blood test results about my Hashimoto's (which directly effects dietary restrictions and sleep issues) is not only unfair, but unethical. Liz is perfectly aware of my thoughts and feelings about her unprofessional and frankly, incompetent behavior. I've received no apology or acknowledgement. DO NOT assume she is a capable doctor without getting specific answers to your health questions and concerns. The more issues you have, the less she has shown to medically or holistically understand or care to investigate. Her knowledge is extremely limited and she does not appreciate working with an intelligent or educated patient (in other words, a patient that educates him or herself about his or her own health conditions). Please be very cautious about putting your trust in her.

I visited Dr. Mackey on March 3 with leg/back pain, and had a follow up appointment the next week…read more Two days later she called to let me know she'd tested positive for COVID on the same day as my follow up, and she made it clear that a) she'd only taken a test because she'd been planning a trip to Hawaii, and b) she was only informing her close contacts because she was required to by law. She attempted to soft-pedal the news by saying she'd taken a (notoriously unreliable) rapid test that morning, which was negative, and that she doubted she actually had COVID because she didn't personally know anyone who was infected. The overall tone of this call was that none of this was a big deal. Unfortunately, it was a big deal for me. I had friends staying with me that week, and none of us were vaccinated. To be safe, I immediately isolated myself in my room, and my friends packed up and left as soon as they could. Four days later I began having symptoms and took a COVID test, which came back positive. A few days after that, I had a follow up call with Dr. Mackey and let her know I had in fact contracted COVID. During this call, she told me that: 1. Though she had been eligible and had had numerous opportunities, she had chosen not to get a vaccine because she felt it was still experimental and potentially more dangerous than the virus itself. 2. That there is no definitive evidence COVID vaccines prevent transmission of the virus, and therefore no point in getting one. 3. That she didn't feel she needed to be vaccinated anyway, because she was not personally in a high-risk group. 4. That she doesn't treat sick people, so even if one of her patients were to contract COVID, it wouldn't really matter. 5. That the common cold is also caused by a corona virus, so it's very possible that our PCR tests produced false positives and nobody actually has COVID. 6. That she chose to wear a thin cloth mask during appointments rather than an N95, because N95s only protect the wearer. (This is false, and pertains only to the types of mask which have an exhaust valve built in. However, when I pointed out that even if such a thing were true, she might have prevented herself from getting infected and then infecting me, Dr. Mackey paused for a long time before claiming there was no way she could know I actually caught COVID from her, and that I could have gotten it by going into a store, or using a gas station bathroom.) I was fortunate because I had a relatively mild case, and have since mostly recovered. (Although I still have not recovered my sense of taste/smell.) My friends were fortunate because we cared enough to take precautions, so they were able to visit their elderly parents the following weekend. But what is truly maddening about this situation is that Dr. Mackey seemed unable to understand or take responsibility for the fact that her bad decisions around COVID don't just affect her. Even if it were true that every single one of her patients is young and healthy and in a "low-risk" group, some of them would certainly leave her office and interact with other people who aren't. Never mind the fact that even people in low-risk groups have died or been hospitalized, and that there are other negative long-term effects besides death that we still don't understand. I'm not writing this review to hurt Dr. Mackey or her business. I just wish that I'd known the things I know now before choosing to see her. If you've read all of the above and don't think any of it is relevant to you as a patient, that is your prerogative. But if, like me, you would prefer to see a medical professional who is not a vaccine skeptic, who takes every possible precaution to protect her patients, and who doesn't become defensive or evasive when asked to accept responsibility for her actions, then you now have that information, and you can make a more informed choice than I was able to.

I finally decide to go "out of network" when the quick 15 minute doctor visit wasn't enough to figure it out and an in network osteopath man handled me so much I was terrified of getting adjustments ever again. Her adjustments are amazing, next to miraculous! Her nature is very calm and intuitive and she approaches me as a partner, always making sure to ask me how I am doing. She really tuned into my body and gave me as much time as she could. I know some complain of the price tag but the visit isn't short. It's actually what you'd pay for just 15 minutes with an integrative doc for a consult but with Dr. Mackey you also get adjustments and can have a conversation versus quickly going through a checklist of symptoms and having someone throw supplements your way. Also, I didn't expect to have other issues addressed and discussed that could be exacerbating the issue but her recommendations were very helpful as she is very knowledgeable on many theories of wellness. She even told me about a theory that would later have me not needing to come as often called TMS, by Doctor Schrader and after reading that book I have improved even more.
