My first visit was great! I received assistance from the owner who explained EVERYTHING upfront & didn't apply any pressure tactics to make a purchase. With no hidden costs and no pressure, I was back in two days to make my first purchase and then again in another two days to make my second purchase. The quality of the hair is superb. The hairline on her work is flawless, very natural. All items are worth her asking price. Hadiiya Barbel is definitely offering a high end, top quality product and I will return to make additional purchases. Very impressive work. Hanna cut and styled one of my purchases directly on my head. She was great: talented, patient, and friendly. Tip for first timers: know what you want (I did not), have pictures if possible. It's not just enough to know what you DON'T want. Makes things easier on everyone. Side note: I did feel a bit rushed in order to accommodate what appeared to be two regular clients. I also felt a tad "left to my own devices" with styling my new hair. I went home and perfected the piece to suit me, because what I left with wasn't it yet! My experience was terrible! Whether it was the bait and switch, the poor quality, the lack of professionalism, the dishonesty or the dismissive approach of the owner it was ALL AROUND TERRIBLE! In early November I visited the "open house" they host on Fridays and purchased a custom unit after. I tried on one of the displays and waited for a rep to be available, there were only two and one was busy and the other was on an errand to pick up supplies. After a 20-minute wait someone assisted me in between eating her lunch and fielding questions from the owner. We were to create my unit with a base (closure) matching my skin tone and add/creat baby hair. During the "sales pitch" everything was possible and I was going to LOVE IT! When I called to set an appt for my fitting, they explained it had been ready for a week and I could make an appointment. HOWEVER, after my first visit, I wasn't exactly confident that it was made the way we agreed. On my first visit the young lady helping me didn't seem like she understood my needs and when I engaged with the owner who was present she was dismissive. She was too busy acting like a celebrity. Huge personality full of energy and for the most part very pleasant. But, she was either EXTREMELY confident in her staff or she was there to make "an appearance". I even overheard her on the phone saying something to the effect of, "I come in on Fridays because the customers come to see me, they like to meet me." Not feeling so confident, that they got it as we agreed I asked the young lady on the phone to confirm the customizations. Turned out they didn't get the baby hairs done, but it was no big deal. It would be done in time for my appt which was a few days away. I showed up for my visit on time. After a 10-15 minute wait, the sales rep popped her head out of the work/kitchen area. She fitted me with the unit; it was bulky and the scalp didn't match. She explained the bulkiness was because of my hair, we adjusted that it still didn't look natural to me and she assured me it looked fine and it would settle. (SERIOUSLY) We continue to talk and as I am holding the unit I notice you could see the tracks of the hair near the closure. ANOTHER RED FLAG, I slept on the first two, the experience during "open house" and them not remembering the customization details. I explain I am not happy and I am assured it would just need a few adjustments. I agreed to come back a week later. OH, and the "baby hair" was a bunch of coarsely sheared hairs at the hairline. It seemed to be a completely different coarser texture than the rest of the unit. BUT A WEEK LATER, same thing. This time a new receptionist, who jumped in to help and initiated the help of the other sales rep/unit styler. The other rep attempted to make some style adjustments to flatten the hair, but I explain it is the COLOR of the closure. She explains that is above her scope because it is the WRONG closure for my head. It would need to be remade. In this time the owner comes in, and as they are explaining my situation to her because I asked to speak to her. She talks about my situation with me and the receptionist BUT ONLY addresses the receptionist. Taken aback I let them talk and they offer a phone call back after they make the adjustments. I needed to come back anyway for a curly unit I purchased online before I encountered all of these issues. The curly unit needed a minor adjustment and they would give me a call when both were ready. They eventually called to explain that the unit I originally purchased needed additional customization for my needs and they would refund me the cost of it and we can create a new unit that will meet my needs. I ask what those "needs" were, they explain getting it to the right color. I think how is that the case when we originally discussed the skin color match at my first visit, and then it was NO PROBLEM. But at this point I have learned my lesson and I know they are trying to backtrack. They messed up and instead of acknowledging it and fixing it they wanted me to return the first custom unit to buy another "more expensive" unit. HMMMMMM I kindly decline and say I will just take the refund and be in to pick up my other unit when that is done. They take my info and days later I see the refund on my card. Here we are at Christmas and I am just disgusted with my experience that I am dragging my feet to pick up my unit. Fast forward to yesterday and I go in to pick up my unit. The sales rep grabs a unit of the mannequin and attempts to prep it for me. When I press her on the fact that is a display unit and that is not what I purchased (texture, cut) she calls the owner. Only to find out they sold my unit two weeks ago (the unit I PAID FOR) and ordered this replacement. TIRED I explain that is disgraceful and I am beyond disappointed. She was passing off a floor model, used for people to sample. Cut and shaped for a mannequin off to me. JUST DISGUSTED! read more

The crowns are beautiful but the customer service is unprofessional. I ordered my crown on the phone. I had a very good experience the 1st time I bought from her. But that was in person, in the Salon. I ordered a crown in black. I was told that was what I would get. When it came in they sent a photo. It was a lighter, different color. I asked if it would be dyed the color I ordered. they said no, that would be extra. That was not told to me initially. And if you check their site it does not say anywhere on the site that they charge extra for color. It was also not styled or cut. If your company is all about customization wouldn't that be expected? Again, none of this info was provided until after the fact. After going back and forth I was told it would be dyed, styled and cut and then sent to me. I asked if it would take longer to mail since some work had to be done on it but they said no It could be sent right away. When I received it, I was very excited. I opened the box and took out a dry, frizzy piece not in the black color I wanted and asked for and not styled. When I called them to see what could be done, I was eventually told, after having to call them, that they made a mistake in telling me that the color could be done and styled and if I wanted it done I would have to send it back at my expense and pay for the color. Mind you, the 1st time I bought this crown the color and styling was included. Mind you, no where on the site does it say any of those things and it was not told to me over the phone. Managing expectations and being as clear as possible are part of good customer service. I have spent an absurd amount of money on this crown and I was treated shabbily. I now have to find someone to color this crown. So, if you want one of these beautiful crowns go to the salon. They are not set up properly for phone/website orders. I hope Hadiiya updates her site to clearly spell out what is included and what is not included. I also hope that if she decides to change her policies to maybe let previous customers know. Too many assumptions were made on their part. It's too costly of an item to dismiss your customers. I won't buy from her again. UPDATE - it is shedding. A lot. This is really terrible. Cannot gush enough about my experience here! 8 years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and bought a wig at a supposedly expert medical facility that deals with cancer and alopecia patients mostly. The hair was never the right color, was shorter than they had promised (by a lot) and was dry and brittle. By contrast the CROWN I now own was the same price, so much longer that I had to have them cut it (in a good way of too long) and when I wasn't thrilled with my color choice they stayed late after closing to redo it and have it for me the same day (normally at least a week process). Hadiiya spent soo much time with me making sure I tried on every style I was curious about and ultimately ended up LOVING my new hair. As someone going through chemo I wanted to feel beautiful again, and Hadiiya delivered and then some. She even wanted to pose for pictures with me and filmed a before and after for her website. She was truly the right choice and worth the little extra I paid for consultation with her. But her stylist dyed and styled it for me which came out exactly the way I described it to him. The only drawback was the wait to have it made, which is the same anywhere you go (if you want a custom fit and order). Loved the experience from start to finish! read more

I went to Araya expecting exceptional quality and service and boy was I wrong! When showing my wig to professionals, they said it was the WORST constructed cap they had ever seen. After trying several times to rectify the situation with Araya, they were of no help at all and just made the cap even worse. To charge a customer $2,400 and leave them with a wig that is ripping out their own hair and is unwearable is beyond bad business. I will never recommend this business to anyone and now have lost $2,400 to a business that does not care about their clients. Buyers beware. After discovering that I had cancer I started my search for a wig to replace my beautiful curly hair that I knew would be falling out soon. I started googling curly hair wigs in the NYC area and found Hadiiya Barbel. I went down to her shop with my husband and we were AMAZED at her collection of curly hair wigs and straight hair wigs which she calls "crowns". I brought some pictures of myself with hair. My hair had already fallen out and we worked together to figure out what I needed and wanted. She was a pro and knew exactly what to do. She emailed me a detailed bill explaining all the costs up front for the crown that I wanted. I signed the contract, put down a deposit and waited it for it to come in. I thought her prices were extremely fair! When it came in and I went to her shop to see it and have her color it. I couldn't believe how beautiful it was even in a color not my own and uncut...and this story gets better. Once it was colored, I went back to the shop with my husband and my daughter to have Hadiiya cut it. Once it was cut and styled to the way my own hair use to be, it was the first time I had smiled since being diagnosed with cancer. My daughter and my husband started to cry seeing me smile again. Cancer is bad enough and then losing your hair on top of it is horrible. There are no words to describe how happy I am and feel when I put on my crown. The crown is even nicer than my real hair was. The color, the curls, the quality are all amazing. I have gone out with it on and people don't know it is a wig and have complemented my hair like they use too...that speaks volumes! Horrible quality hair... I would not recommend...you would think for the outrageous prices she charges you would be getting premium grade hair but you're not. The quality is atrocious and the service is even worse! They charge an arm and leg for any simple additional service. It's just a bunch of overrated hype...the wig lasts up until one wash after that you have a nappy matted dry mess on your hands...don't even bother calling they will blame everything on you as if you'd pay over a thousand dollars to just purposely screw it up.... Huge Disappointment with Hadiyya would never recommend to anyone...I've been buying wigs for many years and this has been the worst hair purchase I've ever made. I've watched Hadiiya Barbel collections work on Instagram and decided to give it a try. I came in for a consultation and the staff assisted me with coming up with a new look for an event that i was having. I must say that I loved the wild curly looks the best. I found one on the shelf and had it cut and styled to suit my needs. Although there were many priced above my budget, I found one on sale originally priced at $1,200 for $750. What I enjoyed the most was taking pictures in all of the different looks, I felt like a kid in the candy store! I read a negative review here and I'm like that person must have a personal issue with the owner because my experience here was a whole lot of fun. I rarely write reviews but I just had too.  I brought two crowns from Hadiiya and they are amazing!!  I loved to wear weaves and thought it was time to try something different.  There are myriad of people out there that make and sell wigs however Hadiiya's crowns are marginally different.  You get what you pay for with her: quality hair, craftsmanship, divine coloring and let's not forget  the actual haircut.   There are so many details that you overlook when buying but notice when you wear your crown.   The craftsmanship is perfect. The hair is soft and manageable, does not tangle. It sits flushed to my scalp. it looks very natural. I have gotten so many compliments. Keep in mind they are an investment but sooo worth it, especially if you wear it everyday.  You will not be disappointed. Honestly, I have NEVER in my LIFE gotten such special treatment. Araya's hair consultations are much like the VERY INDIVIDUALISTIC consultations you'd have at the doctor's office: VERY comfortable, SUPER attentive, EXTRAORDINARILY patient. I ask TONS of questions, go back and forth between changing my mind, ask to try on a trillion units, ask the manager (Lisa) to take pictures, and NOTHING feels like a bother to them. They treat you like they WANT you to be there. They supply you with so much care you actually just want to chill there for the day. The space is bright, white, chic.... The music is funky and calm, they're burning sage, we're all laughing, and in the meantime, they're taking their time with you as you TRANSFORM. They make it very clear that these are not WIGS honey, these are CROWNS. And on top of that, the owner, Hadiiya gave me a GENEROUS discount when she saw that I was struggling with the price. I feel confident and self assured not only because of the crowns, but because I now know I have a trusted business to rely on for the coming years. I am beyond satisfied. read more

In 2009, I brought a crown from Ms. Barbel for about $1500-$1700 (can't remember the exact price), when she was still working with Wendy Williams on a regular basis. At the time of the purchase, Ms. Barbel guaranteed that there was a lifetime warranty; if anything was to ever go wrong with the crown, I could bring it to her and she would fix it (silly me, I didn't get it in writing- and I'm a practicing attorney). The closure piece on the crown started acting up in 2011; I took the wig to her in the winter of 2011 while she was at the Albi Salon. I received this whole song and dance about how she doesn't even use this type of hair anymore, she can fix it, but she's moved on to doing bigger and better work, this wig should only be a backup wig etc. etc. Like any decent saleswoman, she convinced me that I should get another piece for $1700 instead of fixing the piece I only brought two years before for roughly the same amount- luckily, I only put down a very small deposit, so when I reevaluated spending yet another almost 2 grand on another crown, I decided not to go through with that purchase and forfeited the $100 I deposited. *As a side note, Ms. Barbel and I live in the same neighborhood and go to the same gym (Crunch on Fulton St.) I've approached her, made small talk with her when I see her there etc. etc.- every single time I do, it's like I'm brand new and she doesn't remember who I am. A couple of weeks ago, she had a special promotion for a synthetic wig that was originally $300.00 reduced to $150.00- I purchased one of the wigs and was told to come and pick it up at her new store during business hours. I went to pick up the piece yesterday; upon walking in, Ms. Barbel was having a consultation with two women (I believe one was the hairstylist for the other); you would think that a homeless beggar walked into the store- Ms. Barbel looked me squarely in my face and didn't say a word. Forget that I've paid you almost $2000 dollars since 2009 for your services as a repeat customer; if I had never purchased anything from you ever before, why would you have people walk into your store and you don't greet them? Granted, the girl behind the counter who assisted me was quite delightful, but how do you, as a small business owner and the name and face of your store, see a customer walk in, someone who clearly has already purchased something over the phone, and you don't say a word? Regardless of if she recognized me or not, I've decided that I will no longer support Ms. Barbel or send her any referrals (two people, at least, have purchased from her after I recommended her). She purports to be this big peace and love and unity type of woman; a simple hello to a customer would have killed you? Even in the middle of a consultation? Because I remember that during both my initial consultation and my fitting for the original crown, she was talking to people walking into the salon with no problem while I was in the chair. Same goes when I saw her at Albi Salon- in fact, she was eating her dinner, taking pictures, etc. all while I was sitting in her chair. Now I don't know who the person was that was sitting in her chair yesterday (no one I recognized as a celebrity), but I could care less: greet the folks that are coming into your store, celebrity, lawyer, doctor, server, rich, broke, etc. etc. I paid no less for her services than Eve or Kim Zolziak; do you think they would have walked into her store without being greeted by her? There are too many hair stylists etc. getting into the crown business; I would suggest going to someone else, especially one who stands by their word and knows how to treat all of their customers. And to think, I was going to send my mom, who is battling breast cancer and lost all of her hair to chemo to Ms. Barbel's store for a consultation for a wig I was going to purchase for her. I thin I got scammed. I wanted to buy a wig that would be a bit better than the wigs you can buy off the internet and i thought Araya NYC would be a good option. I purchased the wig ( a syntetic crown) and 2 weeks later, after sending an email to inquire when I could come pick it up, received no answer. I had to call myself and that already is really unprofessional given the prices of the wigs. When I called they told me they had been cutting it and that it should be ready the next day. When I went there the next day, a white lady just gave me the wig with no cut whatsoever, and had to wait again for her to cut it on the spot. She cut it once and I was not satisfied with the result so I asked her to cut it more, and she started to say that I would have to pay more if I wanted so many changes. I told her that I purchased a crown with a specific layering 2 weeks before and that until I got what I payed for, I didnt see why I would have to pay more. She reluctantly agreed but her remarks just should have not happened. The quality of the wig is literally the same one can buy off aliexpress for 40 dollars. Really not better at all. Its really bulky and looks like you have an entire family of caniches in your head. I also asked for a medium crown and this was no medium at all. When I commented on that the white woman offered me another display wig and told me I could just get that one? I said hell no I am not gonna pay 400 dollars for a tired looking wig? What is that even? I finally left with the wig feeling scammed. I feel like it is a scam to charge 400 dollars for a 40 dollar wig that will be reluctantly cut by a white woman. I should have said something but the ambiance in there didnt make me feel empowered to stand up for myself which is always a big red flag for beauty bussinesses. It turned out that she had never received the letter I wrote and had no idea of the treatment I received or what had become of the second piece. She offered to make me a new one. There had been a complete change of staff, and I could feel confident that things would go better this time around. Hadiya's reaching out meant a great deal to me and restored the original opinion I had of her salon as a place dedicated to making women look and feel their best. I accepted Hadiya's offer. I have been working with a lovely and talented wig master and stylist named Sarah who consulted with me and created a beautiful crown that I am very happy with. I have to admit that I love Hadiiya and the quality of products that she provides at Araya. My twin sister and I became long time clients of Hadiiya's after we trusted the wrong person with our hair care, which has since left us with alopecia. I recently purchased a new crown in December which I absolutely adore, and hope to make more purchases soon. My twin sister has had her crown for about 4 years and it still looks great. Even as she has other talented stylists at her beautiful location, she is the ONLY one that we trust in regards to our crowns (lol). If you take care of your crowns, they will turn into a great investment. One of my favorite qualities of Hadiiya and Araya is that she accepts and appreciates a diversified group of clients.
