Even though the store was buzzing with people doing their own last-minute shopping, the staff handled the rush with grace and efficiency. They had everything we needed, and the checkout process was quick and painless--a lifesaver when you're trying to get back to family festivities. Mahalo to Takata Store for coming through for the community on a busy holiday! Your friendly service and well-stocked shelves made all the difference. However there was zero aloha spirit coming from this place. If someone is spending 50-70 bucks in your store at least try to manage a little friendliness. People work their whole lives to visit the place you call home, and you're lucky enough to live there. We never have experiences like this with native Hawaiian or true local businesses who embody Aloha and all the reasons we love Hawai'i so much. Yes I'm a visitor, but I definitely wouldn't shop here if I was a local either. If you're having a tough time that's okay, we all have our days, but don't bring it to work where people are financially supporting your business with their hard earned money. Ok so the store looks a little beat and a bit sketchy from the outside, but inside they offer some of the best tasting sushi rolls around. We picked up some rolls for the car ride to Hilo, and we killed them all in just a couple minutes. They have pretty good variety of sushi, ranging from spam musubi to "bento" rolls. My favorite was the Korean chicken bento roll... which had flavorful chicken, spam, kamoboko (fish cake), and furikake (Japanese rice seasoning)... just like a bento all wrapped into a sushi roll. How genius is that?! Why don't all sushi bars make sushi like this?? The teriyaki beef roll is also really good. And the best part is you can grab one of these delicious rolls for under $5.00! A roll like that at any Japanese restaurant would cost you over $10 for sure. Besides the amazing sushi, you can grab other random items from the store. There's not a whole lot you can get, but there are random things to buy ranging from drinks and Hawaiian specialty food items, to cleaning supplies, and even hoy hoy roach traps. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, and there were samples of all their macadamia nut flavors, popcorn, and coffee. I got a bunch of souvenirs, including their Spam-flavored macadamia nuts, which are definitely unique and very tasty. There's also a small display of the machinery and history, as well as a spot where you can try cracking your own macadamia nut. Their mac nut ice cream was another great treat, especially enjoyed outside with the views. Great place to stock up on souvenirs and local snacks. Definitely worth a stop if you're on the Big Island!

The honey vendor has some free samples. We got some fresh fruit. They had lilikoi so I had to get some. We also got a guava to try. The fruit was good, but it was very expensive. When we were on Maui, there were tons of roadside fruit stands and this is definitely the cheaper way to buy fruit. We didn't see any of these on the big island though.
