I got my previous feline here. The building is older; however, it is well maintained and not dated in terms or architecture. After grieving my previous feline who succumbed to renal failure, I was finally ready for a new furry friend! The greatest aspects of adopting here are the cats and dogs are separate, and there is a "visiting room" [my words, not theirs] where you first select the cats you want to get to know better and then take them to the "visiting room" which is in the same building, just a smaller and more "homey" feeling room, to spend as long as you would like with them. IMO, this is critical to ensure you and the cat or kitten are actually good fits for each other. I spent several 30-45-minute sessions at GHHS doing just this, and when I narrowed my selection to the cat I would rename Dio, I knew he was the cat for me!! The volunteers were friendly and helpful. Those at the checkout area when I returned on Saturday to pick up Dio, were not overly friendly, but who cares? You're only filling out your application, paying the fees, and collecting your new family member. I don't need a welcome wagon, or parade to complete this part. It's nice I got a "kitty kit" which consisted of some cat food, cat treats, and a cat blanket! Also, Dio was neutered and up to date on shots. Thanks, GHHS, for having this nice facility and welcoming those considering adopting a pet who really want to get a good fit and to prevent bringing the animal back due to some personality issues or behavioral issues.

I tried a couple of other shelters in Birmingham and Nashville, but this was my best experience by far. I came across a dog on the website, and immediately called because she seemed perfect. They were incredibly friendly and answered every single question I had about her and the adoption process. When I finally got to drive over and meet her they were so kind and thoroughly walked me through all the steps of adoption. I couldn't recommend this place more! Their staff and volunteers are both so friendly, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience!

She yelled at my husband and was extremely disrespectful when he arrived to make a very generous, quality donation. My daughter said the same thing has happened to her when she arrived to drop off some very nice clothing. When folks are donating very nice items we don't expect to be treated rudely. If someone happens to steal the donation after hours it wasn't a penny out of her pocket. We will be donating elsewhere from now on.

At the recommendation of one of my sisters-in-law, we used Dr. Pitman for boarding purposes and…read moreannual checkups years ago [3 dogs and 1 cat]. The checkups were uneventful and didn't seem particularly expensive. When we boarded our 3-4 animals here, upon pickup, they all had a strange smell and appeared dazed. It took them several days to get back to normal. I've read that this veterinarian co-locates his boarding animals with his animal shelter aka "the Doghouse." This doesn't seem to be a good practice IMO because one of my former co-workers adopted a dog from the on-premises Doghouse/shelter, and the poor pup had parvo! Because I could not find anyone to perform an in-home euthanasia for my sweet kitty-cat Jewel, years ago, as a last resort, I asked Dr. Pitman who agreed to do it. He was not compassionate or empathetic in the least, as I was an emotional wreck, and my husband was, too. [I took 3 days off work to mourn Jewel's death]. Pittman seemed to be in a huge hurry and wanted to get this over with! This was not my intent. My goal was to get my priest on the phone to pray with me, and for me to keep my fur baby as comfortable as possible while undergoing this sad process. I had Jewel on a towel on my lap, and when Jewel died, Pitman didn't even have a proper carrier that would honor my fur baby [think the blue bags with handles the emergency vet in downtown Huntsville uses] to transport Jewel's body to his truck. Pitman just wrapped Jewel in my bath towel and off he went. My last encounter with Pitman was when a stray cat somehow [without us knowing it] got into our back yard. Sadly, our dogs attacked the cat and his back and legs were broken. Wow, this was really upsetting! I called Animal Control to help me remove the poor cat from under my deck and put him into a carrier for me to take to the closest vet I know, which was Pitman. My priorities were 1. Eradicate the cat's pain 2. scan the cat for a chip/try my best to find the owner [he/she didn't have a collar/ID tag on] 3. determine the extent of the cat's injuries and 4. make an informed decision about a path forward. Long story short, he quoted me a price to surgically repair the damage, which I knew would not be the end of the costs for treating this stray cat - and what quality of life would this animal have after such intense damage? Again, not my cat and we were not interested in having a second cat. I thought it may be my neighbor's cat, and when I found out it wasn't, I was losing focus on what the responsible thing for me to do actually was. My workday morning was completely thrown off by this incident, I was not treated with compassion, I was very upset that my animals caused this animal to suffer and after being unable to locate the owner, made the decision to euthanize the cat. I did not feel like I should have to pay the entire price for the euthanization since it was not my animal, and I made this clear to Pitman. Reluctantly, Pitman did discount the procedure and I recall he charged me $150-$175 that morning [this was somewhere in the 2011 timeframe]. Thankfully, that was my last interaction with Pitman. Thankfully, there are abundant kind, compassionate, community-focused, veterinarians in the area now, who desire to, and actually do garner goodwill in the region, who put their patient [the fur baby] and the animal's needs first, and who also foster and grow compassionate relationships with the animals' owners, and do not prioritize power, wealth, and eradication of certain dog breeds.
