If you're into statistics - '10.5' x 10.5' x 3' (3.8 x 3.8 x 0.9m) and holds in excess of 2000 gallons/9500 litres' - apparently the biggest tank in any UK retail outlet! And lots and lots of little tanks too. Small boys and girls totally love this place. Adults are pretty keen too. Crying babies are soothed by the dark ambient lighting and the gentle waft and waggle of the passing fishies. There are some pretty gross things too, sort of wobbly intestinal sea-creatures. And some cuties like star fish and sea horses. It looks like a pretty innocuous warehouse from the outside, but even if you actually meant to go next door to buy daffodils you really have to see this. It's the biggest fishy thing going on in Wales with more fish than you could cast your net at.

With everything from goldfish and sea urchins to manta rays and piranhas, the Aquatic centre has a vast range of sea life that will captivate even the most casual passer by. With such a wide array of sea creatures on display, it is only fitting they offer such habitat to house these animals, should you choose to purchase one of the slippery customers. Ranging from the most basic of fish tanks to perfectly intricate exotic aquariums, the centre caters for pet owners of all levels of experience. Although the price does differ significantly with the quality and size of the tanks, this is only to be expected with such specialist products. There is also a variety of ornaments on sale for those who like to personalise their tanks and aquariums, with items such as Spongebob Squarepants figurines for younger owners to meticulously detailed models like sunken ships and skulls for more mature enthusiasts. A great place to find anything you need for your underwater pet or an interesting place to go if you're at a loss on a weekend.

As you enter the market you will be greeted by the same smell of fresh fish that has filled my childhood memories of this place. Pets World offers a wide range of products for pet owners and prospective pet owners alike. They've got hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits on offer if you fancy getting yourself a furry friend or you just want to gawp at something cute for a few minutes. As well as this they will be able to provide you with all the cages, hutches, food, toys, and supplies you may need for your pet. As with all the traders in the old Cardiff Market, Pets World is an expert in its field, so they will be able to offer expert advice and guidance that you know you can trust.

Ok so I'm not a particularly animally person as in I'm not big on pets. Tthe reason I went to Pet…read moreWorld is because I just happened to be out with my friend who was getting supplies for his Hamster. Overall the stall has large selection of stock including cages, toys, treats, food and of course animals. I had visited once before and if memory serves they had kittens for sale but sadly they weren't there this time. There was however an array of birds which were sat about chirping and my friend was able to get some nutty seedy type things for the Hamster which weren't that bad for value. This shop can be easily located on the balcony in the market so there should be no problem in finding it if you find yourself in need of straw and sawdust.

We used to have a rabbit (a white rabbit that had aspirations to be a magician's rabbit and thus every so often would disappear). We bought the rabbit in this very shop many years ago. He lived to a very ripe old age and bickered with the guinea pig that we also bought in this shop. The pet supplies are adequate but what is really nice are the baby rabbits and few other creatures. But what is really really nice (if your taste runs to that sort of thing) is that hidden in the back of the shop is Dragon Reptiles a scary place where they have reptilian pets. (See Dragon Reptiles review for more scary details).

I think Pampurred Pets is also quite a bit chain, but this is the only branch I've been to. Like Pets At Home, they are big enough to offer some decent promotions such as 3 for 2 or similar deals on dog treats and so on, and they cover foods and accessories for dogs, cats, birds and small animals. What's also nice to know is that they currently sponsor Waggy Tails, a charity based near Bournemouth and Poole that rescues and rehomes dogs who have been abandoned, neglected, mistreated, orphaned or otherwise need a new, loving home. Another handy thing about this store is that - like Pets At Home - it's open on Sundays.

It might seem incongruous at first as it is situated in a huge Georgian buolding that once stood in it's own quiet grounds, the essence of graciousness. Now it is redolent with squeaks and chirps and bubbling of water tanks. Set over several floors, there is a good supply of just about anything you might need for domestic pets - food, bedding, cages, toys, treats. It is always fascinating to watch the many different small fish swimming in their tanks, and upstairs on the first floor you can see small rodent type pets for sale - hamsters, mice, guinea-pigs. Small children love to watch the little creatures as they await a good new home. In fact, there is so much packed in that the customer floor space for humans, especially around the main tills, is rather limited and narrow and often involves a bit of a shuffle. The assistants are always very busy and helpful, but for I sometimes wish they could wear more distinctive 'team tops' as I've almost mistakenly asked customers for advice in the past, believing they worked there! All-round though an excellent store for all your domestic animal supplies.

Still, I miss them all like crazy and none of the places I've lived in here allow pets so there's this huge animal-shaped hole in my life. Pets at Home provides some relief from this. Firstly, and most obviously, I get to go and enjoy the cute animals they have there. My favourites are the guinea pigs and the Roborovski hamsters, and I can quite easily spend a good hour in there debating whether my landlord would notice if I bought one. I am eternally disappointed that there are no mice here, but any cute animals will amuse me well enough. Secondly, since I miss my cats and dog so much, and feel pretty bad for abandoning them, I regularly pop in to buy them treats and toys to take home with me. The range of beds is particularly good, which is handy when you have a dog as destructive as mine. This branch also has a Companion Care Vetinary Centre (02920 232 957).

My only complaint is that this branch (perhaps it's the same at all Pets at Home branches?) don't sell the dog food I buy (Harrington's), so I still have to pick that up elsewhere. For pick 'n' mix dog treats, squeaky toys, and accessories such as shampoo, bowls, leads and collars, however, Pets at Home has far more choice than most smaller pet shops. The staff all seem real animal-lovers, and if you take your dog in with you they often ask if they can give it a treat or two. Just be prepared for your dog to get into a right frenzy over all the food smells luring them from aisle to aisle - oh, and watch them if you go near the rabbit and guinea pig enclosures!
