Came in on Easter Sunday and they were open, which was really nice. The store is extremely small but has a variety of stock. He has some snails and fish. The prices are pretty good for supplies, plants and fish. If you pay in cash, you get a discount. My boyfriend and I came in to buy some plants and fish. I bought a cabomba plant which is doing well today. It was extremely long and green, as of current I have not spotted any pests but I did do a dip for it. My boyfriend bought a super red betta and some galaxy rasboras. The betta was sold to us at a low price because I think he had a bit of a deformity. He is doing well in his new tank and eating healthy. The galaxy rasboras were okay, but they did seem to have flukes so we had to treat them for that. One ended up dying to a deformity unfortunately. Apart from that, they are fairly healthy and eating well. The fish seem to be generally well taken care of. The tanks are sparsely planted. There is a good selection of shrimp, including green, black and velvet shrimp which is something you don't often see. Overall, it's a nice cozy shop and the owner was very kind. He was helpful and gave up tips on how to acclimate the fish. The prices are also great compared to other stores. I recommend it. read more

I dont know why people cant review about the good. ohh they saw a dead fish that day they went in. Well that truly must have been devistating. Have you never had a fish die? When someone is working with hundreds to thousands its normal that some will die.Im sure Bob was helping someone and had no time to remove the dead fish before you walked into his awsome store. Bob will answer any fish related questions and that is priceless. Also the fish i have bought all were in great health. He is my #1 in the GTA and i look forward to seeing the new store. I was pretty surprised by the negative reviews here and really enjoy this shop. I found it when visiting the new Petsmart close by. I had bought several fish at Petsmart and they were all diseased. We stopped there to see and it ended up being our go to fish store. Every fish I have bought have been very healthy and great quality. They have a great selection of tetras and their albino Corries are great quality. I also think the selection of platies and angel fish are fantastic. The betas all have individual filtration, way better then the little cups usually seen at most big pet stores. Bottom line as a fish hobbyists I would definitely recommend making fish purchases at Aqua tropics. My only complaint would be that they could really use some additional lighting. read more

Wow.. To the second poster. Cichlids will commonly attack and kill inferior tank mates, its quite common. And the 'bloated' fish are bred that way, they are balloon goldfish. Try doing some research before looking like a fool and posting something you definitely know nothing about. read more

Been going to Aqua Tropics for almost 15 years now. The owner, Bob, is more knowledgeable about fishes than most staff of your standard franchised pet store, and definitely more honest as well. He won't let you buy too many fish at once if your aquarium isn't ready for it, even if it costs him a sale in the short term. His fishes are higher quality as well; he's been in this business for decades so knows the best places to import them from and which to steer clear of. In the past his shop was a bit rundown and he would once in a while leave dead fish in the tank too long, but I haven't noticed any in the last couple years and he moved to a much nicer location recently. The main reason I've stuck to his store though is because he always has the lowest prices. read more

A couple of months ago my husband went in the shop the first time to buy fish for our new aquarium. The owner asked him for the temperature of our water. My husband said he didn't know. So the owner said "then you're not buying any fish today. Come back when the water is around 80 degrees". While some may not like that response, my husband and I both agree that this is the most honest and respectable way of running a business. We have gone back to Aqua Tropics every time since then for fish, advice, food, water treatment, etc. The owner is honest and won't sell you something you don't need. The only reason this review is not five stars is the slightly less than pristine appearance of the shop (I didn't spot any dead or diseased fish, like the previous reviewer, though). We will keep going back to Aqua Tropics and would highly recommend the knowledgeable and down to earth service. read more

I am being very generous giving this place 1 star. I went in once and I will NEVER go back in. Fish were dead in tanks that were pretty disgusting. Angel fish and others dead and just left. The place was pretty dirty itself. My son couldn't believe how gross the tanks were and how bad the fish looked. The owner while ok was more concerned with sitting and watching the tv than helping us out. I went in for supplies NOT fish thankfully because I would NOT buy my fish from here. read more

Although I do appreciate an opinion that does not match mine, I truly have to wonder if the poor reviews posted below are even meant for this shop. I visited this shop in the hopes of purchasing a gift and despite my complete lack of knowledge, I was made to feel welcome by Bob. I have never had much interest in fish or aquariums but I am quite passionate about animals, particularly animal welfare. I am saddened by the posted pictures of unhealthy looking fish and environments as I found the opposite. Bob discussed his live animals with pride, and rightfully so. Had I been interested in purchasing a fish, I don't believe I would have been permitted to do so. Another customer stopped in while I was there and the owner greeted him by name, with a smile and asked with genuine interest about the mans pond. Anyone with an interest in aquariums or aquatic life should visit this shop. And return. read more
