A cute little salon with 4 chairs tucked in a little building in Montrose. There's plenty of parking with a limit of both 3 and 9 hours. April always does an amazing job with my hair - from just a trim to balayage to full color. Lately I'm too lazy to keep up with color so I get a trim, which comes with shampoo, cut, and blow dry. She can get booked up so make sure you contact her sooner than later. Pricing is very reasonable as well and she pays attention to stay and takes great care of my hair. Thank you!! read more

Jessica was SO attentive to what was bugging me abo it my hair and exactly what I wanted. I messaged her the night before and she easily made space and time to take care of me. I butchered my hair with 3 bad hair dye jobs + highlights that turned it to brassy orange and made me lose the highlights. She spent her time fixing every single issue and gave my hair SO much depth and dimension. I went from brassy orange to chocolate mocha brown with stunning golden highlights. I recently got my hair done by Emilie. She did an amazing job and was able to get my hair to an awesome color that I fell in love with! I have a lot of hair and it's really thick so it can be difficult to do certain styles like ombré and balayage (which is what Emilie accomplished). Of course it took a while since I have a lot of hair but Emilie is a trooper and powered through! I am in love with my hair and get compliments on it all the time. Have waited a couple of weeks to write a review, just to make sure this is the right cut for me. Abbie did a great job, layering and taking off a lot of length. It has made the day better. I love the choppy layers, which is what I wanted and she worked some kind of magic with the fringe area. I look forward to going back and maybe getting some color. I've been going to April Ray for about 10 years now. The salon use to be Tomas Hair salon until she bought it a few years ago. She's young, hip, and energetic...which shows through her cuts and styles. She even saved me when I decided to butcher my bangs. She fixed the massacre I made. Thank you April Ray!!! There were many times when I couldn't decide what I wanted for my hair, so I left it up to her. She has never disappointed me. The salon is clean and the decor is funky. It's a bit hidden though. The salon is located on the East side in the parking lot of Black Cow Cafe and Star Cafe. You'll see a courtyard with a fountain and several other small businesses. Lauren is fantastic! I just moved and needed a new salon, so i yelped around and saw the great reviews for this place. I did some research and got in touch with Lauren, who seemed to be the best match for my hair. Three cuts, a style, and a dye job later, I couldn't be happier! Not only is Lauren sweet and friendly, but she has a great eye, and knew exactly how to work the cut I wanted. I have short hair, and I usually find that even when someone cuts it really well the first time, they can never get it back to perfection in future cuts. Not Lauren -- she has done a great job all three times she's cut it, and I can literally say 'Do whatever you want,' and know it will be awesome. She was also there for me when I needed some crazy styling for an 80's night, and she put in some fabulous highlights that still look great. And, even better, her prices are very reasonable! I have never been both happy with a stylist AND happy to pay their prices... it's perfect! As for the salon itself, the ambiance is really great. It's colorful & eclectic, everyone there is sweet and friendly, and the music is always fun! Hate to leave this negative review, but here it goes: Renata - great with coloring hair (very good at matching, non-damaging, and left hair healthy condition), but hair cutting skills are marginal at best. The first time, the cut was sloppy and hurried, resulting in a real matronly look. But I went back to give her a second chance. The cut was much better but still an average cut in terms of skills. Also, not too happy with getting my shirt wet around the back collar each time during the hair wash process. Renata gets 2 stars for overall skill set. Rachel - excellent with cutting and coloring skills and was personable. But when I left a message for a second appointment a month later, the call was not returned until 5 days later but was done by one of her staff (the staff had just been notified to contact me.) Rachel later told me that she was busy with no apology - didn't seem to bother her that she was so untimely. Also, when I returned to the salon for my first two visits to Renata, Rachel was unfriendly. As a shop owner, not a good thing, Rachel. Down-rated Rachel's 5 star technical skills to 2 for her un-professionalism. I thought long and hard before and after giving this salon enough of a chance, felt that it's fair to give an impartial and honest feedback and that I owed it to the yelp community to share my experiences, though it may not be consistent with the multitude of 5-star ratings others have left. read more

Me and my daughter just got our hair done here by Tina G. and she was amazing. I like that you can email, text or call the stylist directly to work out an appointment time. After looking at the website descriptions of each stylist - I chose Tina because she cut kids hair and also specializes in colors and curly hair. Tina was great with my daughter and was so patient with me as I described what I hoped to have done. She completely understood and worked with me giving me details about what she planned. I got a great color (high/low lights) and a really cute haircut. Lastly, I was so excited when I set the appointment that I never asked for her prices and was a bit worried but the cut and color were very reasonably priced. I love this place. As a very curly haired gal I have had a lifetime of bad haircuts and disasters. I was living in Pasadena and traveling all the way to Beverly Hills for a cut! It was a good cut but not really worth the drive. I was recommended to April Ray Salon by a friend and after talking with the owner about my fears of bad cuts and looking like a poodle she calmed me and I tried her out. I am so happy with what she can do for my curly hair. The cut was just right, the color was gentle and style after was just what I needed and not overdone like a lot of stylists do. I usually walk out of a salon, go straight home and wash my hair and re-style. But after coming out of April Ray Salon I wanted to go out and show off my hair. Last year I did a Yelp search to find a new hairdresser near me. I came across the great reviews for April Ray Salon and explored their website. After looking at the "Meet Our Stylists" page, I decided to try Tina because her specialties fell within the parameters of what my hair requires. I contacted her and was easily able to make an appointment. The salon is a very nice, welcoming space and Tina was so friendly. We chatted through the whole appointment and I loved my cut. My hair has a mind of its own and I am not the best at styling it, but after getting my hair cut by Tina, it has become much easier for me to style. I have gone to her a few other times in the past year since I found her and I am never disappointed. One time we did color and it also turned out great. Whenever I go for an appointment I feel like I am going to see a friend. I love, love, LOVE this salon!!! I have been coming here for the last 2 years. I have to say the Renata is the best stylist I have ever been to. I have fine hair and have a really hard time styling it. Renata has given me quite a few completely new looks that I never thought I could try. They all looked amazing and were very easy for me to style myself or just wash and go. Normally guys love long hair, but I guess that's not completely true. After cutting 6 inches off my hair 1 1/2 years ago I started getting to most amazing complements. One guy even told me that he normally hates short hair, but my hairstyle was so amazing he has completely changed his outlook on short hairstyles on women. Its always a pleasure to relax in the funky & fun environment, and the flavored coffee is de-lish! I was seeing Amy until she relocated to the East Coast, (she was amazing!) but I was super lucky and so very grateful to have April adopt me as a client. Its hard to find that perfect stylist - I've been through many over the years, trying to find that ideal blend of talent, expertise, passion, humor and friendliness. April met and surpassed all my needs. My hair has always been unruly. When I met April it was long and out of condition. I decided it was time to change things up. I went through several months of trying to find the ideal look - red highlights, red chunks, (then removing the red, oh boy!), blonde highlights, black streaks, (removing the black, phew!) and eventually ending up as a sunkist brunette with a sassy asymmetrical cut. With a smile and a handful of miracles, April has created (again and again without fail) a style & color that suits my personality and elicits positive remarks wherever I go. I trust her implicitly with my hair. Period. Oh and the cherry on the cake - she uses Chi hair products, without Amonia, which after so much coloring, hasnt left me feeling drowned in chemicals. It took me almost a year to go back to the hair salon after my last cut/color. Trauma! As the need for cut and color got ever more critical, I spent hours reading reviews on Yelp! and finally gathered my courage and made an appointment with Renata at April Ray Salon in Montrose. I took this wild leap because two other clients specifically commented on Yelp! about her skills with fine hair. I have fine hair, as in "thin" and "wispy" -- not as in "lookin' fine!". I'm not persuaded by all the "wonderful "fabulous" "bla, bla" reviews on this site -- I need specifics. And I really need a trustworthy and skilled stylist who listens, understands, and can make my fine drab hair look like more. Renata was wonderful, fabulous. Best haircut I have ever had and the color is beyond my highest secret hopes -- varigated, just like it was my very own! I can't remember if I have ever before left a hair salon happy, but last Thursday was the day! I've gone to several hair stylists since I've colored my hair 5 years ago and this is by far the best results I have gotten. Emilie is fantastic! She did not make any promises she couldn't keep and the results were beautiful. She gave me her suggestions of what she thought would look good and she was absolutely right. She used techniques to blend my hair that I have not seen anyone use before and she adjusted to the way my hair reacted throughout the entire process. She is down to earth and very honest with you about your hair which I believe is a great quality to have as a hairstylist. I 100% recommend her to anyone who is looking to lighten their hair (highlights, bleaches, etc). She also gave me a trim and my hair looks much healthier. First off, the salon is very special. It is in a perfect location, very well decorated and warm. I went to see Lauren yesterday for my first hair cut there - she has a great, fun personality. To make a long story short, she is the first stylist who has been able to cut my hair short without it going straight. I have really wavy hair, naturally, and I usually go from wavy to straight (for 2 weeks or so) when others have cut my hair. I don't mind that, per se, but now having seen what a careful, thoughtful stylist can do to trim my hair while maintaining its normal look, I am kind of stoked. Her price is very reasonable. There is very ample, free, 3 hour parking adjacent to the salon. And, Lauren was able to meet me on Sunday which really fit my busy schedule. Thanks Lauren and thanks April. read more
