The food was amazing! I had the buffalo burger with sweet potato fries. The ranch is definitely made there, it's the thick and creamy kind not the runny dressing kind. Tho there wasn't a server, The cook was super friendly! Food came out pretty fast considering we ordered 4 plates. I didn't expect such good food to come from such a small little cafe on the side of a road side store but it was bomb! And there's a beautiful river right next door we enjoyed after we ate. Prices were more than fair. I will definitely go back again!!! One of my new favorite lunch spots. read more

What has happened to this place?? There was one waitress/do everything young woman, but she could not make up for the 45 minute wait for food. One dish was so late we took it to go. The waitress felt so bad that she gave my husband HER lunch. The bathroom was absolutely disgusting. Pee all over the floor. Hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. One of the members tried to get some change for a tip, but when the woman opened the cash register there was NO money in it. The ATM was also out of order. The poor employee left in tears. What a horrid experience for all involved. Shame on you, Applegate General Store Cafe. Shame on you. read more

Fantastic Breakfast! Wow! What a find! The breakfast here is wonderful. We've eaten here 4 times. Best corned beef hash that we've ever had. Probably because the Chef Tim smokes and cures the meats here. We also had French toast made with Brioche bread and lemon butter. Out of this world. The wait staff are friendly and attentive. Jessie the head waitress really hustles, our coffee cups were never less than half full and she's always smiling. Can't say enough good things about this little place tucked behind the Applegate store. read more

We had breakfast here twice and LOVED it both times. The place is small and cozy. Very country store. But the food is delicious and filling. A changing menu of daily specials. Very reasonably priced. It takes a little while to get your food, but so well worth the wait as the ingredients are fresh, and you know your food is made to order. I had the chorizo the first day and an omelet the second. My husband had the french toast special on the first day and another baked good based dish on the second day. We grabbed some cookies for the road, and the oatmeal coconut toffee cookies were excellent! Super service, a refreshing cucumber/mint water, and a pleasing atmosphere make this a hidden gem off 238 in the Applegate Valley. read more

The old Applegate Store is the center of the Applegate Valley community. It consists of a store, gas station and small cafe. I ordered the lunch special for Sunday: tri-tip with mushrooms, onions and cheese on a ciabatta roll and opted for chicken-barley soup as the side. The soup was freshly made, hot and tasty; the sandwich likewise was hot and tasty. The store/cafe is old and worn looking inside with classic old furniture and some funky metal/flatware sculptures. Don't except anything fancy. Except during the tourist season when folks are weaving through on wine tasting treks or taking the scenic route to or from the coast, most of the customers are locals who mostly seem to know each other. The valley is an interesting mix of artists, professional who work from their homes, vineyard owners and other famers. Many are actively involved in valley activities and promotion. read more

Don't be fooled by the extensive menu. My wife and decided to take a trip out to the Applegate. We had been there when the previous owners were there. I understand the fact that starting a business is a monumental endeavor, But as we placed our order we were told that they had no french fries.I had my heart set on a hot pastrami as they said on their website that they cured and smoked their own meats. then I was told that they had no pastrami. I used to come down to the Applegate Store as a child with my Grandfather, a rancher in the valley, back in the 1960's. Now I take my own kids to the store whenever I'm in the Applegate Valley. The burgers are still the best, the milkshakes are still hand dipped, the locals are colorful (in the vest kind of way), and the store staff is friendly. For what is... a rustic country store and diner, with a gas pump and post office... it is pretty much perfect. read more

Almost didn't stop here; almost didn't eat here once we did stop. But, boy, am I glad we did! The ambience is, well, timeless roadside cafe style--a couple of tables, a handful of padded barstools at the counter. We opted to sit at the counter. The waiter was friendly and the food was simply outstanding. We ordered one of the morning's specials off the board: crab cakes benedict, choice of home fries or hash browns. We got the hash browns. We also ordered one of the less expensive items off the menu--a croissant sandwich with turkey, avocado, and cheese. "We smoke the turkeys ourselves," the waiter informed me. It was good turkey. The youngish chef came by once or twice while we were eating to see how we liked the food. Took a while for the order to arrive, but we passed the time reading the amusing little funny-paper the cafe provides for whiling away the time. It was cover-to-cover juvenile jokes, and it was great fun. The fellow next to us at the counter order a half order of home made biscuits with gravy, which came right away--so if you're in a hurry, order the biscuits. But if you want to wait for one of the gourmet breakfasts, you will find it well worth the wait. read more

My husband and I are starting a road trip with a weekend in Applegate. Neal and Maryann own the store and café, as well as horsefeather Farms Ranchette B&B. So far we have eaten lunch and breakfast at the Cafe and it has been excellent. We recommend the slow smoked corned beef sandwich on sourdough, which included crispy house made pickles. The Hawaiian burger was excellent, and the fries are great. This morning we started the day with big plates of biscuits and gravy which really hit the spot. The coffee was excellent as well! What a great place! As you would expect from any "country" store the people are friendly and the food was excellent. My wife and I were staying at Horsefeather Farms Ranchette (see review) and breakfast was included with the stay. They provide a credit and you eat here in the cafe section. We are gluten free and they went out and made sure that there was gluten free bread available; real class there! We had gluten free french toast and crisp bacon. Yumm. The next day my wife had the GF french toast again and I had the two egg, hash-browns, bacon and GF toast breakfast. Eggs and bacon perfect! Next time I will have them cook up the hash-browns just a little more though. Great food and good prices. We went wine tasting on Easter and then before driving home went back to the store for lunch. Delicious Cobb Salad and wonderful buffalo burger and crispy sweet potato fries. Once again just great food and good prices. Above all else the waitresses, Patty and Carin - I am not sure about the spelling for Carin, were fantastic. We always say that you can get really good food in a lot of places but the staff is what makes the difference. They sure made this place a 5-star experience. read more

The Applegate Store and Café have the BEST burgers for miles around. Puts Red Robin to shame! And the prices are very reasonable. For a little country store located between Medford and Grants Pass on a scenic highway, not only is the scenery worth the drive, but stopping off and having lunch or breakfast is a must. Everyone that works there is so friendly and treat you like they have known you all their lives. read more
