I have to say I'm quite disappointed with the staff at Stratford City's Apple Store.
I went to buy the HomePod today, well this is how it went:
I arrive at the Apple Store and see lots of people shouting, Stratford City is usually packed with rude customers and teenagers who go there just to kill time so I'm not very surprised and I understand that listening to music was going to be a bit difficult but I still wanted to give it a try.
I start with the black HomePod, it looks like a weird guy was listening to some music next to it, but he wasn't interacting with it, and as I approach the HomePod he starts looking at me in a strange way as if the HomePod was of his own. Okay, let's move to the next one.
The white HomePod looks free so I approach it, I like its shape and the sturdy material but I want to try the audio quality as this is what matters most, so I try to connect to it via AirPlay but HomePod wasn't responding... hmmm not a good start. I double check Bluetooth and WiFi on my iPhone and they are on, I'm also connected to Apple's WiFi but nothing. No HomePod response.
Ok I start looking out for help, I try to get some attention from the staff around, they're all quite busy. Luckily I find someone free at the other end of the shop and tell him that I was interested in buying a HomePod but my airplay wasn't connecting. He tells me he doesn't really know how that works so he brings me to someone else, he passed me on to this guy so I explain him my problem and he doesn't know either!
So he tells me to wait and calls someone else... I wait for about 5 minutes.. finally the guy shows up! Excited I tell him I wanted to try out to AirPlay to a HomePod one of the songs on my iPhone X since I have 256 GB with some AIFF music with extremely good quality for audiophiles.... and it turns out he also doesn't know why no HomePod was working with AirPlay (I'm sure my AirPlay works as I always AirPlay to my Apple TV when at home.. hence my choice).
Nonetheless I ask him if it works with Apple Music so the guy starts telling me about Siri that it doesn't work with Spotify... ok all things I already knew. I knew how HomePod worked since I've been reading so many articles on it, so I asked him again if the HomePod was connected with an Apple Music account. Yes it was! YAY Time to listen to some music!
So I just ask HomePod "Hey Siri, play some music by Enter Shikari" Siri understands me and it all works. It suddenly felt like Siri could understand me better then the staff at Apple when suddenly the guy taps on the screen and turns HomePod off!!!! Then he starts talking about all the features blah blah.... I already knew all that, I only wanted to listen to the sound quality but he bloody stopped it!!!!! Grrrr this really annoyed me so I tell him I was going to try the other HomePod cause I wasn't too sure about the colour.
Okay so I'm back again at the first black HomePod and the weird guy is still standing next to it! Cool, I act as if I didn't see him so I ask Siri to put some on music and the guy starts complaining... "Ok man, do you mind if I just give it a quick try? Thanks" This guys starts speaking to me quite loud with an Arabic accent and in an aggressive way and won't let me listen to the music. Ok, I give up.
I just go back to the other end of the shop to try and make up my mind on which HomePod I wanted to have, colours and possible questions but I couldn't really try it out so I realise the only way was to try it home and if I didn't like it just return it.
So I call a girl to assist me with the purchase and as I tell her I have a business account she starts looking for it but couldn't find it my account... after 5 minutes still nothing, she asks for help... Really? Ok, I open Safari on my iPhone and log in with my account, I was about to show her I could purchase it online and just do a pickup in store but she eventually realised I could give her my email address and that was it, I could finally make my payment.
Another 4 minutes and the guy finally shows up with my HomePod!
Excited...!? until I notice the box has the plastic a bit open and the box is a bit damaged on one side....... :( Well it's Stratford and unfortunately I had the very same experience on Christmas for my Apple TV 4K :( So I eventually take it but I promise myself that this is the last time I ever come to this Apple Store ever!
The girl eventually asks me "do you need a bag?"... this was worth a facepalm. As if she didn't know how big and heavy HomePod's box is!
Anyway to summarise I had a terrible experience, I would have never expected such thing from an Apple store, I'm an old loyal customer, been purchasing Apple products for more than 10 years for myself, gifts and now my business but after such experience one thing for sure is I will never come back to this Apple Store in Stratford, ever. Not even to try out new products. read more
