They have a large assortment of books, nice selection of book bags, a great travel section filled with all kinds of maps..., a few games, and wall filled with magazines. The kid's bookstore is attached, and you can walk through to it. They definitely had local customers they had made special orders for as well as many of we tourist looking for gifts and good reads. If you have children or need a great kids gift you have to check out the kids shop!

As many drivers are distracted trying to see signs, navigating their way to coffee fix and with this oddly laid out but decent sized parking lot it makes it a bit of a take a risk to shop vibe. As I do find the layout is an accident waiting to happen, I try to assess the busy level by driving by to do other things before going here. So far this is a good strategy for my mobility. The grocery itself is conviently located off the main highway and for Duncan, it is halfway along the drive itself. So nice to have a grocery in that area as you can easily add it along your stops. Food is always well stocked and place is well kept up. I always enjoy seeing their seasonal dispalys (turn right and near the floral area is usually where you'll notice the creation). Great selection of items like at any Thrifty's place but I do have to say for price point, I don't feel like it is a cheaper option (like the name might suggest to some). Staff is always friendly and quick to help if you have a question but you don't see a lot on the floor. So there was a few times I would buy vitamins and supplements if I had help locating them but there was no one to be found. That definitely could be an improvement being that they make an effort to stock so much for that section. I really do like their take away items for single people and always find something new to try when I'm shopping. Sometimes even as a gift for a friend. Overall a decent place to shop. Just be mindful of that parking lot situation.

The place has that old musty book smell that I love and makes me want to go back again and again, I looked around there for an hour and it felt that no time had passed.

The owner, Shai Thompson, provides Style sessions, Closet audit services, and invaluable feedback when trying on clothing. The boutique has a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere and the music is always enjoyable. This is one of my absolute favourite places to shop!

The staff are wonderful. You get the community feel here. In a town like this with so many tourists it is a vital to balance community and the tourist trade. They succeed and work out the alchemy of both without losing their identity.

Unlike it's pre-owned counterpart, Salt Spring Books is all new novels. They have an eclectic selection with a great emphasis on Canadian writers and a really fun kids section if you have little ones (or want to be the "cool" but still educational Aunt). But perhaps my favourite part of this place is that they mix literary themed gifts in with the novels & picture books. Last time I was in, a dragon puppets from Puff The Magic Dragon was tugging on my nostalgic heart strings so strongly, I'm amazed I walked out empty handed. Bookworm or not, this place is well worth poking your head through the door while exploring the island.

The staff and owner are not only helpful and solicitous, they're very friendly. A person can enter the bookstore in any mood and is guaranteed to leave feeling even better! Not only this, but the selection of new books is always current and the used book section is a treasure trove of finds. Also, I often order books based on reviews that I read in the Economist, some on the esoteric side and they most often arrive within a few days. I have only good things to say about Talisman Books. We're fortunate to have a bookstore like this on our island.

Does the gulf island air make them give up their mint condition hard copies freely? Whatever Black Sheep Books is putting in the water - continue on, continue on. My guess is there is more then SSI generosity in the mix but that doesn't change the fact that this is perhaps my favorite used book store. Period. Why? Well first off, their staff picks section is a gold mine. Seriously. Every time I poke my head in the door I could easily take the entire four shelves of staff picks happily home with me. Second - they are organizational wizards. Their expansive fiction section is alphabetized to perfection, poetry is broken down by region, photography by subject, hobbies by... well hobbies. This two story building is a prime example of the right way to use a label maker. Thirdly - they have an excellent eye for rare and eccentric oldies. I will be honest, I am not the most astute when it comes to limited edition novellas but the section front and centre when you walk through the door boasts everything from full edition encyclopedias, to hard cover, leather bound copies of Gatsby, and on occasion, 50's smut... hellooo peek of a garter! Behave you! It's a playground of eye candy and definitely worth the shuffle through. Lastly, the prices are fantastic. Sure, the aren't the rock bottom prices you can find at some used book haunts but for the quality and condition of the books, it can't be beat - a hard copy version of the complete Maus series? $20. Most novels - big or small - $6-8. Plus, if there's something specific you seek they are absolutely excellent with making note and calling you... even if you happen to live in a completely different city. This place is aces. Book worms take note and pop in when you run away to the island...
