We had about 18 of us that were traveling together with the senior adult group from church. I was the bus driver. They decided they wanted to stop into the Apple Hill Orchard to pick apples. They charge you $3 each if you just want to walk in the orchards and not pick anything. If you want to pick apples they charge you the $3 each to walk around + what you pick. They have a general store you can walk around in and purchase bakery items in. We purchased a bag of Pink Lady Apples that we picked in the orchard, a bag of apples fritters. We had an apple and it was very good! The only negative was when we called and said we were coming they said no problem. When we arrived and they saw we had a bus we got the impression they were too happy because of the limited parking. I parked in the grass area on the side away from the building. No issues. If you do bring a large vehicle here just be prepared there might be limited parking. As a last resort you could park it at the church at the bottom of the hill and walk up. read more

What a beautiful place. You can self pick apples or buy in bags in the cute lil country style store. They sell apple cider by the cup or purchase 1/2 gallon to go. A perfect fall activity! We stopped here on Labor Day on our way back to Charlotte from Banner Elk. It's a beautiful spot with rolling acres and an orchard full of apple trees of various varieties. The farm store has so many goodies to take home, including fruit butters, baking mixes, and cider. There's also a bakery window with its own menu where you can order baked goods and cider slushies (note that the window closes at 4:30pm, whereas the farm store closes at 6pm). I docked a star because I was hoping and expecting that the baked goods we ordered at the window would be hot & fresh, which would have made the glazed fried apple pie and 1/2 dozen cider donuts (mix of glazed and cinnamon-sugar) so much better. Had a great time at the orchard! Beautiful day and well priced for u-pick apples. We brought our newborn baby to get out of the house. The orchard was quite hilly, so I used my baby carrier to wear the baby instead of the stroller and I think it would have been challenging to push a stroller. The bakery wasn't open when we were there but we were able to get cider donuts in the store. Has picnic tables so we brought lunch which was great! Would come back next year read more

I had never been to an apple orchard, so it was so great to get to walk around and see different varieties of apples and see apples that had fallen to the ground. The store is very nice and they have a large selection of apple. That being said as someone who had never picked apple or being to an orchard before here are some tips that I wish I had known before coming. 1. Depending on the time of year this place gets PACKED! If you want to pick apples you are suppose to register online for a time. 2. Anyone who goes out to the orchard has to pay a separate picking fee. It can get pricey if you have a lot of people. 3. Although they have a lot of varieties not all are available all the time. We came one time in early Sept right around the time they open and they barley had anything. Most of the orchard was closed off and they only had like 2 or 3 varieties. We later saw there is like a chart that shows when they expect which apples to be ready. So make sure you check this before you go. 4. It's HOT! I don't know what it is but I swear the orchard is several degrees hotter than anywhere else. When we came in early Sept it was almost unbearably hot. Don't come when it's hot unless you like sweating and not having many apples to choose from. Unless we are coming with kids we now typically just buy bags of the apples we know we like. Overall a fun stop. read more

What a charming place! I would not call myself a donut lover but the apple cider donuts here were sooooo good I ate two! I know! Trust me I had to control myself not to eat more! It was a chilly day so the warm apple cider pairs well with it too and warmed me up. We didn't pick apples but we walked around the orchard and took picks and watch others harvest apples. It was too expensive. Best part was the drive there. I can go to the orchards on 16 on the way to Wilkesboro and prices are much better .

Great place to go. Let me tell you why.... The staff were friendly and very knowledgeable. The place was on a farm, but it was clean! They had a ton of heat features like the apple cider van, store which sold great items at a better price. Such as apple butter, cake mixes, tart mixes, etc. Surprisingly a wagon is a hard thing to pull and shift when you got heavy apples and kids on it along with the hills. I enjoyed the workout and physical challenge. The experience is priceless. I went with my family (nieces, mom, etc) everyone had a good time. Great bonding activity and healthy. Got some great photos. Even if you go with friends try it. The apples were good. I went recently and depending on the time you go various apples are in season so October is a good time weather wise and plenty of good quality apples. The donut was good although I couldn't taste the apple. The batch we had were warm and fresh. The cider was a nice touch. FYI- There aren't many signs telling you that your going in there right direction on the road until your close by. Also the streets going to the farm are not well lit. I encourage you to go during the day and when it gets dark leave asap. It's in the country so deer etc. it's best to be safe. There is no WiFi so it allows you to really disconnect from technology for a bit. read more

We enjoyed our apple picking experience here. The staff did a great job explaining how everything works and where the ripe apples are located. You will need to buy one bag per group (I've been places where you have to buy one bag per person which is absurd). The small bag held about 25 apples, which was plenty for us. We also picked up some apple donuts and cider of course. It wasn't crowded at all on a Monday. Will be back next year. read more

A smaller apple or hard with plenty of U-Pick varieties, farm tractor yours, cider donuts (praise!) and coder slushies. As a northerner, I've missed apple season since moving to NC. I was skeptical of the warm weather permits picking and cider slushies in lieu of mulled. I got my apple picking fix with a reasonably priced peck, got my long-sought cider donuts still hot from frying, and yes even the slushies were perfect on an 80 degree day in September. A great place to spend the day picking apples. The orchard is large with a variety of apples available. The orchard store is large but could stillbuse more products to offer. They do offer fried apple pies and apple butters. The apple cider doughnuts are ok, it seems like they are only good when they first come out of the fryer so the prepackaged ones are really disappointing. I would still recommend this place for a family or couples that want to pick apples. read more

We stopped in the Visitor Center on the way to the mountains. We were looking to experience Morganton. When searching the map for something unique, Apple Hill was at the Top of the list. After being informed that we missed apple picking season, but we voted and made the trip for apple cider. Anything you could dream of Apple. We spent hours reading on and eating apple bread in the middle of the apple trees. BTW customer service was excellent. We will be back. read more

If I had written this a month ago, it would probably have been 5 stars - the hired staff was very helpful and friendly. The store was quaint and well stocked. We did purchase the pick your own flowers, but they were pretty sparse and not a ton of variety. We knew pick-you-own apples was going to be crowded, so I made sure we got our tickets as soon as they were available online. BUT... We really wanted Stayman Winesap, but were about a week or two early, so my husband and I went back last Saturday on our way to the mountains to pick up a few bags for us and our family. They were well stocked, so we bought 6 large bags. PLEASE SAMPLE THE APPLES BEFORE YOU BUY! I won't make that mistake again! I tried an apple, and thought it was rather soft and mealy, which is not normal for a winesap. Then, my son-in-law (for whom we bought 3 large bags), sheepishly asked if we'd tried the apples; he hated to say they were mealy and not very good. My daughter then tried one, and she agreed. That's three of us. Then another daughter called and asked if we'd tried the winesaps yet. She had tried one and it was so mealy she couldn't eat it. So that's four of us. I called and left a message for management, just to let them know, and when they called back, it felt like I'd insulted their own child. They were completely non-apologetic, defensive, and basically I was the only one who complained. I tried to explain, but was constantly cut off with 'Ma'am, I got your message and heard you." She did offer for us to bring them back for inspection and a refund, but we won't be driving the hour, even though we'd spent $78 on apples that can only be cooked at this point. BOTTOM LINE - the apples WERE MEALY, and the person on the phone was totally unapologetic and defensively rude. As a small business owner, we would never treat our customers this way. No more 3 1/2 hr drives to Hendersonville for me! My new orchard of choice is just a 1 1/2 hr drive away! Apple Hill Orchard presents the simplicity in life. Just a stroll through open orchards, picking apples, sampling as you go, mountains in the background, a church steeple poking through the towering treetops in the distance, and the sounds of families having a good time! This orchard isn't as large as most in Hendersonville, but how many apples can one eat anyway? There's a paved walkway that takes you all the way to the back of the orchard with grass rows of apple trees branching off along the way. The cool thing about here is the country store that's selling their homemade jams, butter, pies, fried pies, ice creams, pre picked apples, Apple slushy, and those to die for deep fried glazed apple donuts! It's just a neat way to spend a day that will be enjoyed by kids for sure, more so by the adults for the simplistic escape of daily society! read more

Don't fall for the hype. This place is terrible. Just go to your local Farmers Market for a better experience and tastier apples. In fall 2014, I really wanted to go apple picking, having fond memories from college, and found this orchard would be on my drive from NC to TN. Their apples are the same quality as what you buy at a mid-range grocery store - nothing special or fresh-tasting. The apples I purchased from different vendors at the Raleigh farmers market were all much better - super delicious! Even worse, their fried apple pies are blasphemous to the idea of fried pies - soggy and wet. I've never had a more terrible fried pie. They were slimy! Slimy! It's truly like they didn't even try, assured that tourists, schools, and churches would come anyway, no matter how poor the fare and mediocre the apples. Anyway. Don't go here. Please. It's awful and they don't need any encouragement to keep up such a low standard. read more

Yellow delicious, Gala, Honey Crisps and some other apples were ready for picking this hot August day. This was my first trip to an apple orchard and we drove 360 miles to get to this one. It was worth the trip however as this place has such beautiful views in the foothills of NC. They have pick your own or you can buy them at the country store on site. They furnish wagons for pulling,baskets for filling with apples and lots of expert advice for first timers like myself. The store also has many apple and fruit products for sale. So disappointing! The 2-star rating is merciful. My experience was a 1-star, but I went for specific reasons. Ambiance & Donuts. I've been to multiple Apple Orchards / Cider Mills over the years, and this one was my least favorite. The setting boxes you into an ugly center surrounded by buildings, so the ambiance isn't great. The donuts and cider are sold out of a food truck, which doesn't give you that natural 'Cider Mill' feel at all. Worst part of the experience: The donuts. They're terrible. I've had AMAZING cider mill donuts before, and these are not donuts you're looking for. They were cold, soggy, glazed and sugar donuts, with perhaps the faintest hint of apple. I'm not even a foodie and these were that bad. So, if you're hoping for good donuts, don't waste your time. If you want a great ambiance, beware. If you want a road trip to pick some apples and ride a tractor, and don't care about good donuts, this will work for you. read more

The apples here are wonderful. They really make apple picking an experience and as easy as picking your own apples can be. The farm itself is beautiful and there is lots to do. If you go on Saturday, like we did, you can take a wagon tour of the property. I highly recommend doing this. The owner of the farm is the tour guide and he is very knowledgeable about the apples and the apple growing process. After the wagon ride we spent some time in there store where you can purchase everything from apple cider to apple butter and the best purchase we made was the apple cider slushies. They were WONDERFUL! The only complaint that I had was with one of the female staff members. She was not very friendly and rushed us on to the wagon ride just to sit and wait. I do recommend checking the website and calling ahead to see what apples are currently available for the "U Pick" part of the farm. The website does show a schedule of what time of year is good for picking which apples but is not always reliable. We checked the website and planned our trip for a time when out favorite apples would be ready for picking but unfortunately, the frost caused some damage and we were unable to pick them. That was totally no fault of the farm! I understand that those things happen and we still had a blast! I highly recommend planning a visit to the orchard. It is worth it. read more
