My friend and I spent a full week with ATA at the end of September-beginning of October, 2014. It was her third time with ATA and my first. John and his team of expert trail guides planned hikes perfectly tailored to our abilities and interests. (We are both in our sixties but reasonably fit and active). Most of the time it was just the two of us with a female guide on our 4-6 hour hikes. I noticed that they accommodated other guests who were there at the same time in the same way - offering some longer more strenuous hikes and providing low key day tours to surrounding attractions for one guest who was not capable of trail hiking. The scenery and terrain are lovely and the ski lodge accommodations provide rustic charm and a wonderful large indoor hot tub. ATA staff arranged for yoga classes for those guests interested, and the spa offers massages. Afternoon kayaking on nearby lakes was also included in the package. The food both at the hotel for breakfast and packed lunches and at the nearby restaurant for dinner was plentiful and healthful. I would heartily recommend ATA for individuals who don't want to hike alone, especially in unfamiliar territory. read more

I absolutely loved my time with Appalachian Trail Adventures! I went as a single woman and had a blast! John and the two guides I hiked with, Leslie and Jen, were all a joy to be with, unfailingly considerate, encouraging, and knowledgable. We went on a different hike every morning and each was well suited to my "hiking profile." I like 3-4 hour intermediate level hikes with some challenges but not too many. Each hike took us to absolutely gorgeous places. On my final day, we went caving, which I highly recommend. In the afternoons, we went kayaking and swimming, once in the river, and twice in two different lakes. Each lake has a pair of loons with a young one. What a treat to see and hear them! The food was also terrific, both at the Summit and at the Foundry. If your looking for fun in the great outdoors where all you have to do is show up, this is the vacation for you. read more

Wow! What a good time we had. John and his team were fantastic. I have never been a serious hiker but his team was able to see my worries and push me beyond them. Every night we went to bed seeing and doing something new, pleasantly exhausted. The package that he put together for lodging and meals was fantastic. I really thought we would be having granola and humus all weekend (which are choices on the menu) but we also could treat ourselves to steak and duck. All prepared excellently. What I loved best was that he will tailor your adventure to you. His team is very flexible and wants you to have a great time. I have vacationed with Appalachian Trail Adventures twice, both times for a week in the summer. John and his hiking guides were great at planning hikes that fit with my experience but also pushed me a bit. Each hike was different in its own way and always included a scenic vista or waterfall. The accommodations were rustic but comfortable. All of the food was delicious and well-balanced for the day's activities. Along with hiking, there were excursions to local sites and kayaking down a local river. Wonderful place for an active vacation in a most beautiful area of Vermont. My sisters, daughter, and nieces were looking for a place to have a get together and we felt we hit the jackpot with ATA!! John was totally accommodating to our various levels of ability and figured out hikes that we could all do together. There were eight of us from 47 to 77 years old. For two days we hiked in the morning, had a picnic lunch, and kayaked in the afternoon. Dinners at the Foundry were excellent. We are planning to return next year!! read more

Great hiking spa! John and his guides did a fantastic job in planning some beautiful hikes as well as other activities such as kayaking. The hikes were stunning and we had the option of doing either a 1/2 day or full day hike which is what initially drew me to this spa. I wanted the opportunity to be outdoors all day hiking! I have spent 5 wonderful days filled with hiking and kayaking excursions with the ATA team this July. John and the guides were super friendly and they did everything to make my stay so very enjoyable. Had a wonderful two days hiking and kayaking with eight female relatives. Mom, aunts and cousins. John and his guides were great and took us to some beautiful places.
