Stopped in to the Apollo Grill on my way through Peterborough. Used to go out to the original Royal Burger drive in with uni friends from Trent and wanted to see if the Apollo "Royal Burger" was reminiscent of old. I ordered the classic Royal Burger, onion rings, and a strawberry milk shake. All was quite good but IMHO the burger was smaller than the original. I should have gone for the double. We've been meaning to stop into Apollo Burger when passing through the Peterborough area for years. Today we finally did, and we were not disappointed. Upon entering, the first thing we noticed was the amazing 50's diner inspired decor touches, complete with checkerboard floor tiles. We arrived mid afternoon on a Saturday, so it was quick and easy to be served and find a seat, although I hear that on Friday and Saturday nights the place is hopping. Knowing that it was a popular local joint, I was expecting some good diner eats. Given that this was our first time here, we wanted to try a few of the many things the menu had to offer, so between the two of us we ordered: a double and a single cheeseburger (with our choice of an assortment of fresh toppings), a regular order each of french fries, sweet potato fries, and onion rings, along with two fountain colas. The burgers were fresh, juicy, flavourful, and excellently prepared. The sides were equally done to perfection, hot and crisp from the fryer. One thing that did stand out to us though, is that this place is immaculately clean, and I mean the entire place. I know food establishments need to adhere to strict cleanliness guidelines, and I would expect that the food preparation areas would be spotless, however Apollo Grill seems to take this far more seriously out in the dining area than a lot of other places. Additionally, given the current COVID-19 situation they supply hand sanitizer at the door and have accommodated dine-in seating with responsible physical distancing, along with a plexiglass partition at the counter. As should always be mentioned, the hardworking staff behind the counter. They all seem very friendly, efficient, but above all, happy to help a first timer navigate the menu. All in all, in our opinion Apollo Grill is definitely a place to stop when in the Peterborough area. We will definitely visit again and now wish we had done it sooner! I have taken my family here for quite some time now. Yesterday I took my son and some of his hockey teammates for lunch/diner, it was 3:15 so there was only 1 other customer in the restaurant. Placed our order and waited, their kitchen staff is lost. My fries were cold and for some reason the cook felt it was required to cut the burger in two while cooking it to see if it was done. What a rookie mistake!!!!! They couldn't get three orders to come out at the same time and made my order twice. It was a joke. Don't tip before you get your meal here, you never know what to expect. When you pay 45$ for two burgers you better get quality and service. Quite the let down yesterday! read more

When we called back to request a correction, I learned the cashier has zero authority to correct errors and a bad attitude. It took two phone calls and a bit of a wait to connect with the owner. Definitely not our first time there. Good parking right out front, staff are friendly, restaurant is very clean and the food is great. You'll pay a little more than most fast food places but the portions are large and the food is awesome. One of the best sweet potato fries I've had. The poutine was really tasty - very big order if you get a poutine as well tho so have an appetite. The fresh cut fries are just fine if you don't. I first went here with my dad about a year ago I believe for father's day and it was one of,if not the best burger I'd ever had up until that point. I belive I ordered a double cheese burger with lettuce,mayo, tomatoes, bacon and ketchup and it was just the thong to quench my appetite. The feel in the resterant is classy but not so much so that you have to even attempt to dress up nice. The seating arrangements were also vary convenient having good space but also being able to see through the window almost anywhere you sat, though in saying that it probably wouldn't be to comfortable for someone that wants to stay out of the sun The sevice was good but nothing special, the waitresses seemed to have a cheery look on there faces which even further improved the mood and they have got my order right every time I've been there (five to be exact). They don't have a lot of fancy toppings like glazed vine ripe tomatoes, or dijon "extra fancy" mustard, no, they have fresh beef, great buns, and simple straightforward burger toppings leaving the fancy stuff to people who can't remember the last time they had an honest burger! Bun to burger ratio is just right, and for those who like more meat, order a double and have a double serving of heaven. Meat has just the right amount of fat to meat ratio, so the patty doesn't become microscopic when cooked, but stays juicy and most when you sink your teeth into it. Onion rings.. oh the onion rings! I can still taste them, and I got a bit sad when I realized how quickly I ate them. Fries cut fresh and somewhere between a shoestring and a wedge, just like burger fries are supposed to be- substantial! Ice-cream special: $0.99 on a sugar cone! Oh no, this isn't soft serve, it's the real stuff, made with milk, cream, tons of chocolate/strawberry/french vanilla or whatever your delight. Trying to chanel a post war diner is great, but even post WWII you got to eat off of plates, had napkins and salt and pepper at the table, and didn't have to clear our own table. There was an option when we went to pay that allowed us to leave a tip. Not sure what it would have been for, since we were the only people in line and we still had to wait to order or even be acknowledged. I don't tip at Mac Donald's either. The burger itself was great. Toppings were fresh and the bacon was perfect. I thought that such a nice, 'steak ground daily' burger deserved better than a 'Wonderbread' bun though. The poutine was not as good as a chip truck, and the sweet potato fries were over-cooked and over-salted. True to the 50's vibe, there was lots of plastic garbage including from the Kurig coffee.
