After a day full of driving along the Great Ocean Road, we were ready for dinner. We walked around the town, checked out a few restaurants and settled on Apollo Bay Seafood. It's between George's Food Court and La Bimba. We dropped in on a Wednesday evening (around 7:30pm). It was pretty busy but kept on getting busier the closer it got to closing time. The inside is clean but basic. They also have three picnic tables outside to sit at. Service is no frills here. They give you an order number and then yell it out when it's ready. You also have to ask for water and cutlery. The menu is split into fish & seafood, seafood packs, value packs, today's specials, burgers, souvlaki (random!), snacks and salads. Their seafood packs are pricey ($64.00 for the Apollo tasting platter, $125.00 for the great ocean lobster feast). You can also buy fresh fish, oysters, prawns and scallops from their counter. Prices were reasonable. What wasn't reasonable was charging $1.20 AUD for ketchup and other sauces. Ridiculous. - The port mussel pot ($20.00 AUD) - Portarlington mussels in a garlic butter and white wine sauce. It came with three small slices of crusty bread. You get about 20 mussels. Decent but mussels were on the small side and the sauce wasn't spectacular. We witnessed an older gentleman order the same dish, complain about 5 of his mussels that hadn't opened and watched them take it back to the kitchen and re-cook those 5. I've never seen anything like that happen at a restaurant before. They didn't even offer to give him a new plate. - Grilled lemon pepper calamari & chips ($14.00 AUD) - the chips were mediocre but the grilled calamari was excellent. Lightly breaded, tender and you get 6 pieces. This was easily the better dish. Avoid getting any of the deep fried stuff. Just go with grilled; healthier, tastier and you actually get to taste the seafood. 2.5 stars. read more

Decent seafood, we liked the calamari but the hot water costs $2, the sauce also costs $1 each time We got 2 teas, I asked for more water and they said it's $2 per cup of hot water, which is ridiculous Obviously will never come back, you can get seafood at a better price and not pay $2 for hot water after already ordering tea. Located at a seaside town on the Great Ocean Road (B100) about 2 hours and 30 minutes driving distance Westbound from Melbourne and about 90 minutes Eastbound from Port Campbell. I was driving around this town looking for a good place to eat and found a parking spot after an exciting morning visiting the Port Campbell National Park and driving along the Great Ocean Road. Coincidentally, it was right in front of this place. This place is run by a Greek family and also serves some Greek food as well. They offer Fish and Chips at a price as low as $9, but you could pay a few more dollars if you want to change the type of fish you want. After the first bite of my dish, I really liked the texture, it was not overly fried, but it was not overly soggy. The fish tasted very fresh, and I could tell that they really put in heaps of effort in preparing the fish before frying. The chips were also good, not too salty. Oh, the tartare sauce. Although they charge an extra $1.20, it is so worth it. Trust me. The flavour was so distinct, and I know for sure that I will not find tartare sauce that tasted so good when I come back to a plebeian New England seafood restaurant in the USA. It made a huge difference, and if I did not order it, I may have thought this place was just a regular but tasty Australian Fish and Chips shop. This place is at an excellent location. Although it is very far from Melbourne, this area is a nice escape from the cities. The beach is very close, and the countryside scenery is really nice. Overall, I think I had some of the best Fish and Chips not just in the state of Victoria, but also in Australia so far. I think if you don't get the tartare sauce, I think you're going to miss something out. If you don't like this type of sauce, it's still a worthwhile place to stop by for some fried or grilled seafood at an excellent location in Victoria and along the Great Ocean Road. read more

Everything was tasteless, just a mass of unsatisfying food, except for the garden salad which was over-slathered in balsamic dressing. We ordered a large salad, but it was quite small. Good for a quick meal. Everything battered and fried. Butterfish for $6 was amazing. Chips ($3) are a good size portion, and surprisingly tasty! Batter was light and not oily, and cooked to just yellow-golden. Chunky fries were similarly just perfectly cooked too. Going for the fish and chips combo ($9) doesn't save you any money from ordering the two separately, so if you don't want chips, go for two fishes instead for $12. Why only 4 stars? Worst service in a long time and I work in hospitality. Cold food, forgotten items and horrible service when we asked why - blaming your customer for a mucked up order isn't the way to handle it. Best fish and chips ever... there I said it!! As I consider myself a connoisseur of all things fish and chips I highly rate this place. The staff behind the counter can tell you what has been freshly caught that morning (pretty much everything people!) and are more than happy to tell you about the day's fishing. Nice indoor area to sit if the evening's cool, or roll over to the beach. I've brought American friends here who have been blown away, thus ruining all fish and chips experiences once they have returned stateside. They even charge for ketchup even for fish and chips.. charge 2$ for a tiny cup of hot water, even for refill for paid tea. It's a horrible cafe with the old ugly waitress. After one day tour in apollo bay and around, our family go around the street and would find a place to have dinner. According to yelp, we drop in the cafe and order some food. The white old waitress shows no patience when we cancel the oyster. The cooked prawn is too cold for my illed 2 years girl. When I ask some hot water to warm the prawn, she tells my I have to pay 2 dollars and say:"there is no free hot water IN AUSTRALIA." It's an discrimination I think. Especially said with her ice face and tones. I don't eat anything there although I have paid . It's really unpleasant and sick. If you are not white or can not speak Australia English, you'd better not go there. read more

Avoid if you can. Fresh seafood, but the place full of problems. The guy taking our order didn't know the taste of a scallop (which he admitted) and didn't understand the word "seared" (literally haven't heard it). The older, grumpy guy was plain rude. Everything your order is deep fried by default, to the point where you barely taste the fish. For an extra $0.50 (!?) you can ask for your fish grilled. read more

To put it simply, these guys know how to make excellent fish and chips: beautiful crispy chips with just the right amount of batter and cooked to perfection - well at least it was the two times I visited recently. The fish is fresh. And they tasted plain delicious. Their service is pretty good too -- I asked for some vinegar to take-away, and this friendly guy in the kitchen went out of his way to grab some more vinegar from the back, a plastic container from the front counter, and gave it to me no worries. You want fresh delicious seafood in its simplest form? This is the place. It runs like a well oiled machine. I had a dozen oysters that came plain with a few pieces of lemon, just how they're supposed to be served. Some of the best oysters I've ever had. The staff could be more friendly, but their toughness kinda adds to the place's fish bistro seaside charm. I had a great experience and encourage you to try it yourself. read more
