Quick and easy to stop in for some solid bread and treats! Wasn't in love with the danish I had but the bread is always the best.

I finally tried Apicella's. It's been on my radar as one of the most respected New Haven area Italian bread bakeries. I was down the street getting pastries at Lucibello's and they recommended Apicella's when I asked about bread. Apicella's is an old school bakery that looks like it's been in business about a century, which I think is true. They presumably make bread in the back and there's a small area in the front where you order. I bought a standard long loaf of Italian bread and one that was New York Style with sesames. Both were fresh. Had good inside and outside texture. They met my expectations for high quality Italian bread. I also bought a stuffed meatball bread. it was very good and fed 2.5 people for dinner. The meatballs were small, as if scooped out of a large meatball with a mini sorbet scoop. This was just a style though. The meatballs were small, but there was plenty. The bread had a bit of sauce to tie things together, but it was perfect when I dipped it in warm Rao's sauce at home. Apicella's is a classic Italian bread bakery that sells a few other things as well. Worth visiting if you're nearby. Five Stars read more

They make the best stuffed bread. I normally get it from T& J's IGA, but decided to get it directly from the bakery. Staff were helpful and friendly. They have off street parking. I buy their bread all the time. They are delicious and actually cheaper than if I made it myself. read more

Apicella's Bakery is an Italian bakery that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in 1920. It was founded by Italian immigrant Geremia Apicella. He grew up in the village of Minori in Italy's Amalfi Coast. He came to New Haven in 1907 and started his first bread bakery in 1914. He changed locations a few times over the years, but in 1920 he learned of a property for sale at 64 Houston Street. This larger location allowed Apicella and his in-laws to live in a house together and have a bakery on site. The oven was in its own one-story brick structure in the backyard. Apicella originally named the new bakery Apicella's Sanitary Bakery, but the name was later shortened to Apicella's Bakery. He would later be joined by his brother Antonio "Tony" Apicella. The Apicella Brothers retired in 1975 and sold the business to Alphonse "Al" Cimino and his wife Rose. Al had previously worked for Apicella's when he was a teenager. In 1984, he moved the bakery to its current location on Grand Avenue. Today Apicella's is one of the largest Italian bread bakeries in Greater New Haven County. Aside from traditional Italian bread loaves, they also bake hard rolls, grinder rolls, rustic round loaves, stuffed breads, biscotti, taralle, and freselles. Apicella's products are also available at various Italian restaurants and local supermarkets. I recently visited the retail store at Apicella's. Although I've been eating their bread for years, this was my first time visiting the bakery itself. The place smelled great! Not only were people stopping in for bread loaves but also morning pastries and coffee. I bought a loaf of their "Famous" restaurant-style Italian bread (with sesame seeds) and a loaf of their round Italian bread. I used the restaurant-style loaf to make myself a delicious muffaletta sandwich for lunch. I later used the round loaf to make some Butternut Squash & Bacon Crostini for dinner one night. As someone who grew up in CT and now lives in NC... I can tell you first hand that if you've acquired a taste for their breads .... Don't settle. I've actually called and asked if they sell the dough itself outside of CT so that I could enjoy that fresh baked bread (that I was so used to buying growing up) almost ANYWHERE in CT and found out that I was, unfortunately, spoiled growing up. It's something I still miss. Whenever I visit CT is one of the first things I seek out, just to enjoy fresh baked bread. read more

There is always something amazing waiting for you at this family owned establishment. For years their breads and rolls have adorned our breakfast table. I've even discovered a few delights that have become staples at home as well. Their stuffed breads are amazing. The danish and other desserts are made fresh every day with the best ingredients. My favorite is the cheese danish. They are consistent. But get there early because the good stuff goes really fast. And that means everything! read more

I ordered the "biscotti" through a grocery store and it turned out to be basically plain crusty bread. I guess I can find someway to use it but was really expecting the cookie type of biscotti not plain bread. I googled the term biscotti to see if There were two types of biscotti and really only saw the cookie type. Was a bit disappointed at this. Haven't tried anything else here. read more

Bought Freselles and a loaf of Italian bread, both products were burnt .I was so disappointed.Ive been eating Apacella products for years and thus is the first time that both products were uneatable. Hi All I have been very fond of Apicella's freselles for years. In my restauranr I used them for many of my Italian recipes. There were always a few bags in my pantry at home. Now that I am living in Florida there are no such thing as close to the Apicella's freselles. I would love to buy them on line if they were available. This is without a doubt one of the best places to do business. My church carnival committee used Apicella's for the dough for the fried dough booth. We were in a tough spot because we had difficulty with our normal vendor, we called around and found Apicella's. Not only were they significantly less than our original vendor, but they delivered it (delivered it!) fresh as often as we needed it. We were having such a great experience with the company that we ended up using them for our bread and rolls. I love that this is a local, family run business. Mary Beth and her sister and brother were an absolute pleasure. And most importantly we got a ton of compliments on the bread and the dough - the quality and the taste. We will absolutely be using Apicella's as our bread and dough vendor in the years to come. read more

Normally I would give Apicella's Bakery (Freselles) 5 stars. I have been a fan of that producer for over 25 years. Freselles have always been on my dinner table. However, the last few bags I have purchased have a very different taste. They taste like burnt toast and have no flavor at all. What gives? At first I thought I purchased a new product with different ingredients, but no same ole. Ingrideinets seem to read the same. I hope someone @ Apicella's can clear up this unfavorable mystery for me. I would be happy to write another review once the product goes back to the flavor I have enjoyed. read more
