    Rocamar Beach Hotel - Pool

We spent 4 nights at Rocamar in August, 2022. We usually stay at the Tivoli in Carvoeiro when…read morevisiting the Algarve, but wanted to branch out this trip for something new. The beauty of the property is not adequately seen from the front or even the back, but from the beach below the cliff. We had an oceanfront room with a balcony. We were actually directly above the pool and a great view of it, too. The room was spacious although the bedspread and decor appears to have been from the 70s. We spent a lot of time at the pool bar and esplanade bar and want to give a big shout out to Vinny & Paulo, both of whom treated us with excellent hospitality daily. The buffet breakfast was a welcome morning fuel source for our cliff hikes and hours on the beaches. It included an array of fruits, vegetables, meats & cheeses and hot items catered to the British. The milk for cereal was warm and the Delta coffee machine was a disgrace to Portuguese coffee, however. A friendly older Portuguese man sanitized every table after guests were finished. Speaking of coffee... There are no coffee pots in the rooms and none in the lobby. Breakfast isn't served until 8AM, so if you want coffee before then, you have to go into Old Town to get a cup. There's an excellent pastelaria, Barhon, just 5 minutes away. One annoying thing about the hotel is access to the property before 8AM. The esplanade entrance is below the lobby. You cannot enter or exit the property from the esplanade until 8AM. Why on earth they have the exit locked until 8AM is beyond me. I'm also not sure what safety implications this has in the event of an emergency.

I wanted a sunny break and booked this hotel via a travel agency so didn't get so much info on the…read morehotel only beforehand and the package was pretty good overall. I wouldn't stay in this hotel again though, because: - Located in the main club strip of Albufeira (I love to dance but mostly clubs were very tacky and I sleep like a rock but my husband couldn't get a wink!); - Hotels tend to "omit" in their website that they do have wi-fi (but only in the main lobby); - Some properties tend to squeeze their pennies and in the end the guest suffers. An example being that food in Portugal is homemade and pretty damn good but they clearly get the "most cheap stuff ever" and bang all together for a few of the meals; - Getting the half board you get breakfast (which I gladly had to skip as it was extremely poor for a 3* hotel) and dinner...usually in these deals drinks aren't included but water always is and in this one EVEN the water was an optional extra, so you either have to eat without a single drop or fork out cash for a bottle - 5 times more than if you were to buy it from the market... - No mini fridge at the room so no way to keep bottles cold; - What REALLY set me off was the horrendous quality of their coffee machine. I can't be without my coffee fix and I've never tasted such bad beans. Really tasted like something was burnt. The decoration is quite nice and the place has potential but they need to up their game to avoid losing guests and even stars. I mean, can't they get a more modern food buffet station instead of making their guests lift huge, heavy and hot lids with one hand and use the other hand to spoon up the food onto their plates? Also, avoid odd mistakes like putting croquettes in the cold salad bar and chips (that quickly become soggy) in the same heater as steamed vegetables? And the guys at the reception aren't very well informed and say that everything is around the corner but don't specify any info. Seriously? At least, I had a room change as I booked a double bedroom but got a room with 2 single beds and had to ask to change it; the plus side being the second room had also a nice bath with great shower pressure. And every night we had a different type of traditional fish for dinner, even though the dessert was some cheap cake from the market or the left overs from the morning's melon.

Me and the missus usually go Airbnb, but this time we chose a 3-star hotel right in the middle of…read moreAlbufeira. First of all, we were disgusted to discover that the hotel is located directly across from a street where every other building is a booming late night club/restaurant which caters almost exclusively for the type of British football hooligan-esque that usually flock to places like Lanzarote or Ibiza, but somehow washed ashore on the south cast and stumbled onto the street across from my hotel room where they chose to spend every night dancing, drinking, shouting and skirt-chasing until the wee hours every night of the week. The windows on the patio doors 3 feet from my bed were vibrating all night to the shatteringly loud, trashy clubbing beats. I half expected that a group of stray Everton supporters were gonna smash through the patio door, topless, flabby, big red faces, burned backs, cheap gold necklaces shouting , in thick East London accents"LETS GO FAACKING MENTOOOOLLL!" However, if it weren't for the locals, I still wouldn't recommend this hotel, because of a plethora of reasons. The staff all seemed ill-informed, the breakfast seemed good at first because the idea of reading the menu and seeing "bread, butter, water, juice, coffee, cappuccino, hot chocolate, toasting facility, mini-croissants, various cheeses and meat selection, various fresh fruits, and full British breakfast, and all unlimited buffet" seems good....but then you inspect the quality of all of those individual elements, and its all cheap, stale, over-rotated, and by the third day, it will make you sick to your stomach. As for the dinner...the food is a significant step up from breakfast and they try multiple options, but the waiters and hotel assistants are constantly hovering, talking very loudly to each other to re-fill the food stations, taking your places even if you haven't finished, so you can't relax. (oh...and they charge you for water at dinner!!) Also advert - "air-conditioned rooms"....reality - the air-conditioning doesn't work in any room, and we had to move twice, and it didn't work well in any room. You get the idea. The hotel looks nice and for the decor I give those stars.
