This was my first visit to Antico, having found it on the Open Table app, which has become very useful for finding less well known places to eat.
I got on the metro at Central and got off again at Jesmond. From there it was a ten minute walk, if that, to the restaurant,,and after a call to the restaurant, was straight forward enough to find.
My table was booked for 7.30pm, but there were already quite a few diners seated and eating.
Staff were pleasant and helpful, and I was welcomed by the owner, who then proceeded to seat me, offer me a menu and take a drinks order.
Antico is Italian food at its best, but without the exorbitant price tag often associated with it. Portion size is very good and unlike in London, where I am from, you don't need a telescope to find it.
There are a wide range of choices on offer, enough to suit most people's requirements.
For my meal, I ordered:
Starter
Spending Di Pesce
Pieces of tuna and king prawn, freshly cooked, and served with lemon and on a bed of green leaves.
Main Course
Pollo agli Asparagi
Chicken in a cream sauce and asparagus. A portion of vegetables/potatoes comes with the main course.
Dessert
Salted caramel cheesecake
My meal was excellent, very well presented and tasted quite superb. The desert came as a recommendation and well worth it was too.
Combined with a large diet coke, my bill came to £29.90 plus tip.
I felt the price to be very reasonable and you could have paid less, depending upon your choices.
It was very obvious by the way people were coming in that this establishment has many repeat clients. Certainly the staff are friendly enough and they deserve to do well.
One thing I like about Antico is that you are not hurried in any way. The meal is there to enjoy and savour and that's what I did. I was there about 90 minutes, and really enjoyed my meal.
Reservations are highly recommended as tables fill up very quickly. I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone and if I was back in the area, I'd happily return. read more
