Pair of Palermo reviews without photos - 2 of 2…read more It's only appropriate to write this review as part of a matched set. That's because this was the next stop after La Taverna di John. The pizza was more than fine, but I wasn't going to balk at "dessert" that I was being treated to and where the consensus was to go. This is definitely the place - Brioscia on Via Mariano Stabile, meaning this dude was, or is, "stable." Who can forget a street name like that? It sits under or near one of those blocky office buildings or condos that must have gone up during the building boom of the '60s or '70s, and where the sidewalk is covered by the colonnade of the building. (I'm sorry for having to get into all these specifics, but I can't seem to write up a review without giving a lot of extraneous contextual information.) Moving right along, I am almost sure that the Sicilian term brioscia is rooted in the French word brioche. Here, the thing to do is to have the gelato and/or sorbetto placed into a brioche bun that has been spread apart to accommodate the ensuing decadence! I was not expecting this presentation. I have had "brioscia(s)" in the morning for breakfast and they are really tasty on a stand-alone basis, given that they are sweet. And I've had gelato in a cup or a cone. This merging of gelato and a brioche bun is a cool idea. I shouldn't do this when I go for gelato or ice cream, but I usually mix it up with one chocolate based flavor and one citrus flavor. And that's what I did at Brioscia. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I'm talking about how the mix comes off. That the individual flavors at Brioscia are excellent and tasty goes without saying! There is a little wafer that they place at the top. A napkin is placed below the brioche bun. (I think you should also ask for a spoon.) The treat is, or can be, drizzled with a topping. Note that Brioscia is popular. You won't have the counter to yourself! The young people working here are pleasant. I got a sample, or maybe two, before deciding on the flavors, but know what is reasonable and don't be obnoxious. This is a popular gelateria in Palermo, and for good reason.

I had Baci flavored gelato in a brioche bun drizzled with chocolate. It was delicious, divine, and sinful - the perfect combination for dessert. The gelato was creamy and light, not dense at all. The bun was fluffy and tasty. When the hot chocolate was drizzled on the gelato it immediately hardened and created a great texture. I'm so happy I was able to give this a try while in Palermo.

I came here at least twice a day for the week we were in Palermo. They made my "American" coffee…read moreeach morning eventhough I know they really cringed inside. Throughout the day we sampled freshly made pastries, gelato, panini and traditional Sicilian street food. By the 3rd day they greeted me as if I was a local. They knew a little English and I know a little Italian so we were able to get my orders done. The prices were very reasonable and nothing like the touristy locations. In the evening locals filled the tables on the front patio and to me that is a sign of a much loved restaurant & bar. I don't think I will pass through Palermo again but I will always remember Bar Touring.

Forget money laundering, this is my new obsession. The service was great, the workers are definitely working very efficiently and have a great way of making the place flow. I am almost convinced that everyone in the restaurant is an actor and they rehearse this scene every day- how fluent they move. I bought two arancini. One was burro (which I was later disappointed when I found out that's not donkey, but still good) and one was ham and cheese. I promise I came within 2.4 millimeters of collapsing from the pleasure I felt when I bit into them. I went to the nearby park with one of my wives I met last month and we ate them. It was beautiful. The outside of the food was so crunchy you could have sanded a piece of wood with it. The rice inside was so moist that you'd think you're eating pudding. The meat and cheeses inside reminded me of home before the charges because they were criminally good. I went in around the same time school was letting out and apparently all the kids in Sicily decided to come by and flood the place like a pack of snotty booger balls and make a ruckus. Not Touring's fault however. But I think there should be a rule that requires you to be at least old enough to brush your own teeth in order to buy food with your moms credit card. I will be returning here in June on the 10th and the 11th at precisely 2pm local time each day. U.S. Justice department, come find me haha!!! I'll be wearing a red polo shirt and jeans with plenty of arancini in my stomach.

Palermo is the sweets center of Sicily and at Pasticceria Buscaglione you will discover why…read moreSicilians in their own right can brag about the amazing sweets produced on the island. But they don't. So I will for them. Opened in 1899 (!) dishin' out pastries for over 117 years, Pasticceria Buscaglione gave me and my posse a sampling of excellent Palermitano sweets. It's soo easy to love this sweets shoppe. First, they make a genius cassata and if you've never had this, try it here. A cassata is a dome shaped marzipan cake, ricotta (best in Sicily), enveloped in a marzipan fondant type covering, so delicious and with a coffee will send you to heaven faster than a tiramisu. This version is soo good, my group got them togo. That, in addition to the awesome hand painted marzipan fruit, wrapped nicely for presents to friends, you are treated to a unique experience: you almost don't want to eat them for fear of ruining Art. The mandorle (almond based cookies) were 2die4 as well. Come here for a quick dessert and coffee, after the Teatro Massimo and have an unforgetable espresso-- so good here also. The staff here are friendly and helpful. They speak a little English but the language of food is universal, no need to speak Italian, just point and smile. Hope you enjoy this place, it's a Yelp find. Ciao. Visits: a few Tip: Cassata, mandorle and marzipan fruit are their top buys. But this bakery has been around for centuries, that's how well respected this pasticceria is.
