If you don't speak Italian, it's a bit of a rough time since it is a tad chaotic in there. Sitting is only outside and limited with panhandlers coming to ask for money while you try to eat or drink. Palermo is the sweets center of Sicily and at Pasticceria Buscaglione you will discover why…read moreSicilians in their own right can brag about the amazing sweets produced on the island. But they don't. So I will for them. Opened in 1899 (!) dishin' out pastries for over 117 years, Pasticceria Buscaglione gave me and my posse a sampling of excellent Palermitano sweets. It's soo easy to love this sweets shoppe. First, they make a genius cassata and if you've never had this, try it here. A cassata is a dome shaped marzipan cake, ricotta (best in Sicily), enveloped in a marzipan fondant type covering, so delicious and with a coffee will send you to heaven faster than a tiramisu. This version is soo good, my group got them togo. That, in addition to the awesome hand painted marzipan fruit, wrapped nicely for presents to friends, you are treated to a unique experience: you almost don't want to eat them for fear of ruining Art. The mandorle (almond based cookies) were 2die4 as well. Come here for a quick dessert and coffee, after the Teatro Massimo and have an unforgetable espresso-- so good here also. The staff here are friendly and helpful. They speak a little English but the language of food is universal, no need to speak Italian, just point and smile. Hope you enjoy this place, it's a Yelp find. Ciao. Visits: a few Tip: Cassata, mandorle and marzipan fruit are their top buys. But this bakery has been around for centuries, that's how well respected this pasticceria is.

Sorry Mercato Vucciria. Your time is gone…read more Earlier reviews mention that this location fires up after hours. Reality is, the 'mercato ' element here is dead, following recent moves to improve the locality which have amounted to nothing. A tour guide told us that locals are gutted, with en masse shuttering of market stalls in anticipation of greater things, only to be followed by niente. All that remains are a handful of restaurants opening anomalously amongst the dark, quiet alleyways. There's no hubbub, no smells, no colour. The remaining glimmer of life is from the bars that open in the evening: some of them are nothing short of amazing, like Taverna Azzura. Overflowing with locals drinking and talking loudly, partying like it's 1999. Friday night is the bomb here. I like to think that these locals are defiant in the face of the death of the old market.

The coffee was strong and the view of Teatro Massimo was great :) Will have to try their pastries and their Marocchino coffee next. They have a full service bar in the evenings too. EDIT: Just tried their Marocchino and this is now our favorite espresso drink! This was more of a macchiato with a dash of cocoa on top, which really elevated the espresso without being too sweet. Two marocchinos and a lemon croissant only set us back €5.50. The croissants are huge too

We stopped here this morning for coffee and breakfast before starting our final full day of exploring Palermo. When we walked in and picked our breakfast and coffees, they had us step back outside and choose a table. We chose well. And then our purchase was brought to us. Busy with the locals is always a good sign. We had a coffee at the bar while we waited. Once we were seated we realized the place was a lot bigger than it appears from the street, with two levels of tsbledt. With 10 tables downstairs, it looked like Kati was flying solo, but doing a great job. We ordered 6 plates for four people and after ask that plus bread we were stuffed. Everyone agreed that this was the best meal and the best value of our week in the Centro Storico. I had the spaghetti Trapani with fresh tomatoes and almond. Simple and incredible. So good I finished the leftover sauce on sliced bread. Sal had the pasta pomadoro with eggplant and his review was that it was equally outstanding. Two happy vegans. The large mixed salad was a welcome intermission from this week's carb-fest. My veggie daughter had the same with pecorino and fresh mozz and gave it two thumbs up. The total for four people, six plates, two bottles of water and a conolo was only €44. Mamá mía, that's a good deal! My only regret was that we waited until the last day to eat here. Vegans and vegetarians, you're going to get your fill of pizza, pasta, and insalata this week. Make it good and eat here! I'll wrap this appropriately long review here so I can go walk this off before my daily gelato across the street.
