I've been going to this salon for over a year now. I have had the extensions in for over a year as well. I have done everything here from having my hair black, to brown, highlights, Brazilian blowouts. When I came in my hair was just above my shoulders and a frizzy mess. Within the last year my hair has grown to just above my waist. This is with lightening it, with the extensions and with regular haircuts. My hair has improved tremendously. You always hear horror stories about extensions and how they can make your hair fall out. That is true if you go to places that don't have a clue about what they are doing. I know that if I continue to come here my hair will continue to grow and improve over time. While realistically my hair is long enough to no longer wear the extensions, I love the added volume. Investing in yourself is the best thing you can do.

It's hard to find a salon in Manhattan without attitude and snootiness. Today, I witnessed something extraordinary. A very beautiful young (she couldn't have been more than 30 )woman with very long hair came into the shop asking for them to cut it all off. She wanted to donate it to Locks of Love, a charity which creates wigs for children who have lost their hair due to a medical condition. While Ben was cutting her hair, she told him that she had breast cancer and was about to undergo chemotherapy. She expected she was going to lose her hair and decided to donate it before that happened. When Ben had finished, she went to pay for the haircut and Tamas, the manager, told her there would be no fee, because "You are doing something nice." She was surprised and overwhelmed and kept saying, "are you sure?" over and over. Both Ben and Tamas assured her she did not have to pay. She put on her coat and tried to give a tip, and again they refused to accept it. She then gave them each a hug. As she left, they told her to stop by, they wanted to know how she was doing. By this point I was so touched by the whole thing that I was on the verge of bursting into tears. I was impressed both by the courage of this young woman, turning a terrible situation into something positive, and the generosity of Ben and Tamas. So shout out to all three of them for restoring my faith in humanity. And please consider getting your next haircut there. Oh, and I got a great haircut!

Alex and Anny recently opened, and the space is beautiful--clean, bright, and thoughtfully designed with a calm, welcoming atmosphere. From the moment I arrived, the service was outstanding. Here's the thing. We live in Vermont and, may I just say, it can be CHALLENGING, to get a good…read morehaircut in The Green Mountain State. So there's that. But also, Miranda has been keeping her hair waist long forEVER and was just not able to wrap her mind around actually cutting it. As in getting a style and framing her face and just losing some of all that. And, again, the stylists in Vermont were not "helpful" in making any kind of change. So we were FINALLY going to be able to get back to NYC and I decided I would take the opportunity to take Miranda to an actual, legit salon where a stylist with knowledge, experience and skill would be able to do some "makeover" magic. But! I also needed that stylist to bring the Good Vibes and the Positive Energy to make this a GOOD experiences for Miranda. You know? Back in the 80s, when I was coming up and would sometimes get my hair done in NYC the "salon vibe" was, frankly, STRAIGHT MEAN. Like everyone was snotty and rude and mean. Probably because they were all also starving themselves in a doomed attempt to get that starved look that was ALL the craze back then. Also, of course, I have curly hair and that was just not a thing. It was never a good, fun, positive experience for me. But I'm GROWN these days and figured I could direct the whole situation as required to steer it in the right direction. I didn't have to. Every aspect of our visit to David Ryan Salon was pretty much perfect. I chose David Ryan because we were staying in The Garment District and I knew I could find a place, walking distance, in Hell's Kitchen. So I went online and read through descriptions and services offered and online reviews. David Ryan Salon, in the heart of Hell's Kitchen, is a GORGEOUS spot. The interior is really just perfect. It was quiet while we were there, but also we'd brought 2 small toddlers with us. So that was just as well. When I booked Miranda's appointment I chose to request a Master Stylist. Because, WHY NOT? Two things: if you're paying a professional to do something, get the good one! Also, there is no such thing as a good, cheap haircut. That being said, Miranda's cut and style was $130. Which, IMO, is NOT expensive for an excellent haircut from a skilled stylist. Miranda's stylist was Madion Russo. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Madion. Not only is he EXTREMELY good at what he does. He is kind. Kindness goes A LONG way my friends. Especially when you are talking to someone about their personal appearance and, helping them to change it. Not only did he give Miranda a BEAUTIFUL haircut, he talked to her about coloring and conditioning and styling and ALL THE THINGS in such an easy, approachable way. He tailored his service to his client and was just amazing. I cannot recommend David Ryan Salon and, particularly Madion Russo highly enough. We'll be back!

I initially went in for a haircut, paid the full price, and tipped. After leaving, I realized my hair was still too long, so I returned for an adjustment. He offered not to charge me, but I explicitly asked to pay because I respect his time. I gave him a $20 tip. After that second visit, the sides were still longer than I wanted. I contacted him again to arrange another appointment. When I expressed dissatisfaction, he would reassure me that I looked fine or just needed some product. I felt rushed along rather than listened to, and I explained that concern directly in my messages. Before this third visit, he told me it would cost $30. I agreed without objection. He then specified "Just the sides only" and said anything else would be a full haircut. I responded: "Madi, money isn't an issue. Feeling rushed and limited is." I also asked him to schedule me at a time when he could comfortably accommodate the appointment. On the morning of the appointment, he texted that he had blocked out 30 minutes and reiterated that the service would be limited to the sides. This concerned me because I had already explained that I wanted enough time to communicate and address the haircut without feeling rushed. When I arrived, our conversation escalated into a yelling match, during which he called me rude. I felt treated as though I wanted a free haircut, despite having agreed to pay and having insisted on compensating him during the previous adjustment. My discomfort also extended beyond the haircut itself. During appointments, he spoke negatively about other staff members, criticizing their competence and ability to do their jobs. Spending my time in his chair listening to disparaging comments about his colleagues created an unpleasant atmosphere that I found unprofessional. On a separate occasion, while we were discussing my clothing brand and the shorts I wear, he asked whether I was "cut or uncut." I responded, "Why does that matter?" I found that sexual question invasive and completely unacceptable in a professional salon setting. I understand that appointments have time limits and that additional work costs money. I raised my concerns beforehand and was willing to pay. I expected my feedback about my haircut to be taken seriously, respectful communication, and appropriate professional boundaries. After these experiences and the final confrontation, I will not be returning.
