Let me start off by saying when they were washing my hair, they put a blanket over me to keep me warm as well as a heated head rest when my gloss was settling in! Since neither my stylist nor any one else from the salon has returned my call, I'm resorting to leaving a review on yelp - something I don't think I've ever done unless for positive feedback. I have been going to Alix for cuts for the past two years. She's great; highly recommend as a stylist. She gave me fabulous cuts, and I trusted her with my hair. Fast forward to three weeks ago, post Brazilian blowout, undergone at Alix's suggestion (very frizzy, wavy, but FINE hair). I have an extremely visible bald spot, and my scalp has been flaking and shedding hairs by the bulb since the second I left the salon. The treatment, without question, touched my scalp -- something I didn't learn until later was not supposed to occur...after I sat through the giant red patch and burning sensation that the assistant assured me was normal for certain treatments (I have virgin hair). My hair flaked, burned, and was incredibly sensitive in the spots that reacted with the chemicals, and are only just subsiding almost three weeks later. I called the salon the day before the treatment to ask them if the treatment would be too harsh for my sensitive scalp (I have a small patch of psoriasis behind my right ear, but have colored and chemically processed it with no issue in the past). The receptionist asked if I had medicine from my doctor (of course I do?) and assured, ASSURED me that the Brazilian was gentle and could be tailored to as light or heavy as intensity was needed. Against my better judgement, I went through with it. Since the moment the solution hit my scalp, it's wreaked havoc. The sections that visibly reacted to the solution initially (top of the head, part, and middle top of hairline) have lost almost 50% of the hair. The rest of my scalp is also peeling, but the majority of the hair loss is over the area that the assistant and I saw get red and irritated after application. I've barely been able to leave the house. My hair falls out from the root, bulb attached. I could kick myself for messing with my perfect, frizzy, FULL hair. DO NOT BELIEVE any stylist who tried to tell you this does not alter the texture of your hair. After multiple, neurotic level questions about whether the product would straighten my curls and being assured that it would not, my once fine, loose wavy curls are stick straight, where I still have hair. If you are thinking about this treatment, PLEASE reconsider. It must work for some people, and my stylist was good enough that I 100% trusted her with my hair (something that I don't usually do). But if you have second thoughts on how your hair might react to a treatment like this, PLEASE speak up before you go through with a seemingly innocuous process, and end up with devastating consequences. This is not a place that I, as an underpaid non-profit type, should responsibly be getting my hair cut, but I love them too much to quit them. While Anthony and Leonard are extraordinarily talented guys who do hair for fancy rock star/model types, they still manage to cultivate a warm, pleasant, unsnobby atmosphere the likes of which you rarely see on Madison Avenue. If your experience is anything like mine, they will coach you through the emotional transition from the curly, bangless hair you've been wearing for 25 years to straight hair with bangs, make you look and feel fabulous, and send you out the door with a hug and a homemade brownie. read more

I cannot say enough about how amazing this place is, and moreover, the owners and staff there. Anthony and Leonard are magicians when it comes to color and cut, respectively, but what makes them incredible is how kind, funny, friendly, warm, and caring they are towards their staff and clientele. I have been a loyal client to this salon for seven years and would not have it any other way. I am VERY picky about my hair and everyone at this Salon makes what can be a stressful moment into a relaxing one. Each time I leave with my hair color more beautiful than the last. Anthony Palermo has the impeccable ability to "trick" people into believing I am a natural blonde on a regular basis. Leonard is the only person on the planet that I would trust near my hair with a pair of scissors, each time I get a trim I some how feel as if I have more hair (only now it's healthier). I went to Anthony and Leonard and the whole experience was terrible. Anthony made my hair orange and Leonard's haircut wasn't the worst I've ever gotten, but it wasn't good. The decor of the salon was tacky and the front desk girl didn't seem to like that I interrupted her internet shopping. The whole experience was odd. It almost seemed like they didn't want me there, but they had no other customers. They were just so indifferent about everything. They also charge the same as a well established salon that is right across the street from them. Needless to say I will NOT be coming back. It was just a BAD experience. read more

I had a big problem with this place. I used a Gilt voucher for partial highlights, and they were brassy to the point they looked orange-ish, even after the stylist applied a second toner at my request. The worst part, however, was the blow dry situation. After the highlights, the stylist (who was very nice, but did not seem very experienced considering she used a big board on my head to do the highlights, which I had never experienced, especially at a "high-end" salon), explained that a blow dry was not included (fair enough), but I could pay another $65 (regularly $85, I was told), if I wanted to get it done. I declined, because, when you also add tip, that's a lot for a blowout in a place that already proved it wasn't meeting my expectations. Now, normally, this means they give you a really quick and dirty blow dry just to check the color, and also so you don't wander out in the cold with a sopping wet head. Not at Anthony Leonard...instead they hand YOU a blow dryer and a brush and YOU DO YOUR OWN HAIR IN THEIR SALON. The other customers stare at you like you are a total deadbeat. And since the color was wrong and she tried to re-tone, I did this TWICE. It wasn't because they were busy, it just seems to be policy. It was just embarrassing for everyone involved, and in 10 years in NYC, I have never seen this. At the desk to check out, no one asked me how my experience was, they honestly didn't seem to care, even though I looked visibly troubled. I said I was not too happy with the color and the stylist had offered to let me come back in a few days after I bought some purple shampoo, and I asked if i should I make an appointment now. They told me just to give it time. I gave it time, and my friends and coworkers said it doesn't look right, so I will go somewhere else to get it fixed. I can't say enough great things about Anthony Leonard Salon, especially Anthony (color) and Ludin (cut). I went there after disappointing experiences at 3 other well known salons in NYC. Simply put, Anthony is a miracle worker - one of the most talented and nicest colorists I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. After having blonde hair that was getting brassy...and an expensive haircut from a Fifth Avenue salon that was crooked (not deliberately, and no I am not kidding), they quickly repaired my hair so it looks fab! And every time Ludin cuts my hair, I think it's the best cut I've ever had...until I see him the next time, and then it looks even better! You will leave feeling like a million bucks. Every time. Do not go to John Whelan for coloring. The color turned out much lighter than what I expected. He was unprofessional, rude and defensive when I told him that I did not like about the color job. You're better off elsewhere. read more

This is the BEST hair salon you will ever come across. I have been coming here for four years and do not have one complaint. Anthony Palermo does nothing but make my hair color more beautiful each time.. to the point where being mistaken as a natural blonde doesn't come as a surprise anymore. Also, coming from someone that has a fear of scissors getting anywhere near my hair... I would trust Alix to cut my hair in my sleep! She always knows exactly what I want and is not the type to cut too much off when all you wanted was a trim ( which has happened to me at plenty of salons before I started coming here). Salon is great! Everyone was super friendly and it has great vibes - not your typical Madison Avenue stuffy salon. Alix is amazing! Use her and you will not be sorry!!
