I was referred to Dr Chan by a friend whose family has been with Dr Chan for some years. I was impressed by the modern looks of the clinic. I was also impressed by the digital equipment and the friendliness of the assistants. All was well until Dr Chan began to do some teeth cleaning. Dr Chan was moving a tool about inside my mouth while at the same time he was sitting more than a foot away from me. I was wondering how he could see what he was doing clearly. But then how could you question the expertise of a doctor who is holding a tool inside your mouth. Then he took pictures of my teeth. The information was later used to schedule a full course of treatments at costs which are roughly double of what I had experienced before. I went ahead anyway thinking that I would be getting double the quality by paying double the price. But I later learned that higher price does not always guarantee better quality. To keep the story short: I had two zirconia crowns done. Less than a few months later a hole developed on one crown when I was out of the country. A dentist overseas could not understand how this could happen on zirconia which is supposed to be almost as hard as diamond, and in such a short time. Upon return to Vancouver Dr Chan inspected the situation and he also could not offer an explanation. Dr Chan offered to patch up the hole and to monitor for a while. Then shortly after a corner and sidewall broke off from the second zirconia crown (on a different tooth). Dr Chan again could not explain how this could happen on a zirconia material crown and in such a short time. He offered to replace it for me and I refused. I chose to accept the cost refund. So I went to another dentist to "correct" the situation. Then I realized that the impressive digital equipment has become quite common now. I had a teeth cleaning done and that was like 3 or more times longer in time and more detailed than the one I got from Dr Chan - and at a lower price. During a process of replacing a crown by another dentist, I also experienced much more attentive technique in terms of getting the best shape and positioning of the crown. With Dr Chan it took me more than a week after fitting a crown to get used to the discomfort and bleeding, but this time I experienced absolutely no discomfort at all from the moment that the dentist said "ok, the new crown is set". And all these at about half the price. read more
