I called my insurance provider and they explained that it is a self-funded employer dental plan. So they don't necessarily have to be "in-network" in the traditional way. The office can call the plan/administrator, verify your eligibility and benefits, and find out what they'll pay for your treatment. Long story short, they were lazy when it came to checking eligibility and told me I would need to pay cash since Medi-Cal was secondary. All they needed to do was make a simple phone call to verify. I could call back and make my appointment again but I won't, this showed me they'd rather take shortcuts than provide quality care.
