I have eaten dinner here (it was absolutely fantastic!). However, today I was lucky enough to have lunch provided for our medical team during the COVID-19 epidemic! Our delectable meals were: Mataar Paneer (peas and cheese in onion ginger and garlic sauce), Channa Masala (chick peas and potatoes in a Punjabi sauce), rice and naan. Both main (vegetarian) dishes were absolutely fantastic, but the chick peas will be on my mind for a very long time. The dish's perfect amount of spice was a wonderful balance to the sweet baby pea dish. Best of all is the fact that they are open for take out during the quarantine- I am already scheming how I can get more of this fantastic Indian food. By far, the best I have had in Richmond. Hate to give this a 3 because we loved this for so many years. They changed up the Tikka Masala and it's not nearly as good and not spicy at all. I got an order that had a big hair in it and wasn't spicy even though I asked for it. I shrugged it off and next time ordered 5 out of 5 Indian hot. Was barely spicy at all and wasn't as flavorful. Tried a 3rd time and this time I asked for super hot--5 out of 5 and this was the least spicy of all. I thought it was just me but my wife tried it and it had ZERO spice to it. Strange. Just a correction on my last review of Anokha curbside pick up of my meal, the service was excellent & the server checked my bag to make dure I had everything I had ordered. But I had misspelled 'KIDNEY BEANS' in my last post. I dislike kidney beans especially in Indian cuisine unless this is native to India ir Northern Indian cuisine or regional I don't know. We went for lunch and it was so much food! Very good tikka masala! We got the level 4 spiciness and it is enough to make you sweat. If you love spice, 4 is a good level. If you prefer to just enjoy your food without the running nose, I'd suggest 1 to 3 in spice. The naan was delicious. We also had the corn soup... I didn't taste much corn but it had a decent amount of spice and I thought it was yummy. The entree side... still don't know what the greenish salsa type food was but it was great for dipping the naan! The dessert... still not sure about that. I used to visit Richmond and love to try different restaurants in each visit. From yelps review I opted for this one , over all good experience of eating in Anokha. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Loved the taste of hara bhara kabab and chicken kabab. Main course disappointed me , chicken saffron was tasteless and goat curry was also bland. We love Anokha. I come here with friends and family and everyone is thrilled with the selection of delicious dishes and the excellent, elegant service. The lunch specials give you options for paneer, shrimp, beef, chicken, lamb, and goat in different sauces, and levels of heat. Their soups, sides (lentils, beans, veggies) and perfect basmati rice accompany the specials, with a small, delicious dessert of fragrant rice or mango pudding. We love the creamy korma, the Rogan Josh, and hotter Vind'aloo. Get the mixed appetizer platter to start. Have a mango lassi. They also have a good wine list! Fantastic for lunch (if you have the time), ok for dinner. Food is great, but dinner is ala carte, while lunch includes naan, soup/salad, and dessert (if you eat in). I am a big fan of Indian food and I have eaten at my fair share of Indian restaurants. I do have to say - Anokha does not disappoint! My friend and I went there on a Monday around 5:30 for dinner, and no one was in the restaurant, but by the time we left (around 6:45) there were a good amount of people seated. We started off by ordering some wine. I got a glass of the Malbec wine for $9. We also were served some bread while we were waiting for our meals that came with three different sauces which were all delicious (see photo). We both ordered Lamb Tikka Masala ($18, but it was only $16 for the classic Chicken Tikka Masala) and a side of garlic naan ($3 for 4 pieces). The food came out fairly quickly and it was delicious! The garlic naan was fabulous. The Tikka Masala was also really good, and they gave us a bowl of rice to split (but you can get more rice for free if you need it). The only issues I had, hence the 4-star rating, were that I asked for the medium level of spiciness and it wasn't spicy at ALL, and that my lamb was also not as tender as I hoped it would be. It was honestly pretty hard to chew. Otherwise, it was so enjoyable. The service was great. They paid close attention to us and my glass of water was always refilled. We tried Anokha for the first time a few weeks ago. Staff were professional. Food was of good quality and flavor. I would possibly return if in ShortPump and interested in Indian again. My second place trying indian food and once again, I loved it! Reading the menu is really hard sometimes, I wish there was a little more explanation but I guess trying new things is all part of the excitement! Ive only ever had tikka masala at Lehja so this time I got butter chicken! Butter chicken and tikka masala taste almost the exact same to me but the tikka has a little more flavor and less creaminess than the butter chicken. If you like spicy food, I would definitely not do less than a medium spice level here. That was the bare minimum for me and I cant handle super spicy food. The naan is also a must have for dipping in the tasty sauce! I like both garlic and plain. Definitely check this place out! read more

I've been to about 5 local Indian restaurants prior to discovering Anokha and I am so upset that I wasted money on mediocre food before my gf stumbled upon this gem. The food here is superb! Quality ingredients, attractive presentation, and a perfect spice rating. To add to that, the restaurant is beautiful and they even have a somewhat large outdoor dining area with a veranda. I can't emphasize enough how great the food is here. But what I can tell you is that for as long as I'm in this area, Anokha is the only place that I will ever get Indian food from. I know I've raved a lot about Lehja and a lot of the Indian restaurants in Charlottesville, but Anokha has passed all of them by a long shot on its way to the top of my book. I had planned to go to Lehja a long time ago for my birthday and actually sit down and eat a meal there for once, but then I found out about Anokha which offers soup (or salad) and naan with each lunch order. Lehja on the other hand does not. The answer was obvious as to where I should go to celebrate my birthday. I ordered the mushroom and broccoli krahi ("Fresh Mushrooms and Broccoli Sauteed in a Wok with Onions, Bell Peppers, Tomatoes, Ginger, Garlic and Herbs") because my waiter said it would be creamier than another dish I was considering, and boy did I not regret it. My dish was very flavorful even though I ordered mild, and because the flavors were so pungent, it went perfectly with the basmati rice and naan (the perfect amount too-I didn't have to ask the waiter for more). In addition to my main dish, I also had the tomato soup, which was also very warm and delicious. My waiter also brought out the day's side dish of lentils and beans, which was a pleasant surprise that also went very well with the complimentary rice and naan. After finishing my entree, I asked my waiter if I had to pay at the door or if he would bring me the check, and he surprised me once again by telling me there was still dessert to be served! I didn't enjoy it as much as the rest of my meal because it was extra sweet mango pudding with fruit, and I don't really eat dairy products anymore, but still!-you don't normally get dessert with your meal unless you pay extra for it. In the end, my bill came out to be only $9.34 (before tip)! For that price and this food, I'm definitely returning. read more

If you go here, you have to order the naan. You'll get some before your entree, but order more, it is that good. I ordered the chicken tikka masala for myself and I tried the goat curry. In both dishes the blend of spices were perfect and the meat was so moist, especially the chicken. They are not joking with their heat scale. I'm so surprised that I haven't written a review for Anokha! When I worked in Innsbrook, we ordered from here a lot. Their lunch deal is fabulous. You get a main dish, side, naan and rice for like $10. Everyone I've talked to is very impressed with Anokha and puts it in the top 2 Indian restaurants in Richmond. I would have to say that that's definitely accurate. I have had the vegetable Vindhaloo a few times as well as the chicken tikka masala and oh my goodness... They are both out of this world. I always order medium spice and it's always perfect. Just enough spice to clear my sinuses and add a little flavor. The garlic naan is like the naan version of red lobster cheddar biscuits. This is one place I definitely have to use the phrase "looks can be deceiving". This is the first sit down fancy Indian restaurant I've been to, and I've been to a number of Indian restaurants previously. So I was expecting some superb food. The presentation of the restaurant was well done. Our waiter was prompt, but he was very impersonal and didn't even greet us, and wasn't much help when it came to ordering our food. We ordered an appetizer, which took so long that it came AFTER our entrees, leading us to believe at first that our waiter didn't hear our order to begin with. They brought our food out, and never once checked on us. I had to flag down our waiter to order more naan (which was actually quite good). When he brought us our check he didn't say anything and then didn't say goodbye when we left. To wrap it up: Food was sub-par (I've had better at hole in the wall restaurants and buffets), service was horrible, but the restaurant was nice. I don't know if it was just the dinner rush and if lunch is just better all together, but I know I wouldn't want to come here for dinner again. read more

Ok... A 5 star rating for Indian food is hard for me but this place deserves it. I did my masters degree in England and lived on the "curry mile". Literally a mile of authentic Indian restaurants.... I fell in love with the food So amazing. Since coming back to the states, I have been searching for real Indian food... This place has it. All of my favorite things on the menu from Lassi to Paneer... Just waiting inside for my pick up order the smells that surrounded me just made me nostalgic. What a fabulous place! Hmm craving this as I type. This is probably the best and most authentic Indian restaurant I've ever been to. It's located right across from Short Pump mall in another shopping center. Service is attentive, informative, and friendly. The food, which comes at different spice levels (mild, medium, medium +, medium-hot, hot, and Indian hot), is amazing (which is impressive because even my two Indian friends thought so), there are many vegetarian options, and the restaurant is large and decorated nicely. Tips: 1. Go for lunch; it's only about $10 for an appetizer (soup or salad), entree (usually a meat in sauce that comes with rice and naan), a side bean dish, and a dessert (usually sweet bean). Dinner can be a lot more expensive, about $17 just for the entree which is the same size as the one for lunch. 2. Order the chicken tikka masala medium-hot or hot... it's to die for. read more

This was the first time I ever tried Indian food and before I was somewhat hesitant but this place completely changed my mind. My boyfriend and I went for dinner on Sunday at 5pm and we were the first dinner customers. The people greeted us and sat us down right away. The decor was above my expectation I have to say, it had a nice romantic feel to it. Have to mention, the water glasses were really clean which is a plus for me because many times you go to places and there's small stains or water marks on the glasses. I mean it's no big deal but the fact that they took the time to thoroughly clean that looks really good on the restaurant. For an appetizer, we started off with Shrimp Madras. At first when it came out, we looked at it and thought it seemed a bit pricey ($9) for 6 pieces of shrimp but the flavor with the sauce was actually pretty good so we don't mind the price. For our entrees, I had the Seafood Masala (Scallop only) ($17) and my boyfriend had the Lamb Chop with the Mango sauce ($20) and we also ordered a side of naan ($2). We got some small pieces of naan for free at first but they were burnt... not just a little. Imagine a slice of pizza and the whole crust was burnt. It was that much, all I could taste was the burnt part so I didn't like that. But the ones that we actually tasted really good, especially when dipped in the sauce from my entree. My scallop masala, I think I like it a lot because it's similar to a lobster bisque or clam chowder (when I say that, I mean the creaminess of it). The scallop was cook perfect for me, soft but still completely cooked. (Some places either undercook it wanting it to be soft or overcook it and it's all dry and tough). I actually had left over and took it home and after microwaving it, it was still good. Of course scallop is not as soft but let's just say not a bit of that food went to waste. My boyfriend really liked the lamb chop also, even though it was fully cooked, it still remain nice and moist on the inside. The vegetables that were served on the side had a very herbal taste to it, I think it's quite nice. We then decided to try a dessert, Malai Kulfi (traditional Indian ice cream) ($5). It tasted kinda like condensed milk which I like personally. So if you like condensed milk, you should definitely get that for dessert. Service was great, after we got our food, the server checked on us to make sure everything was good and was refilling our drinks when it was needed. I want to try other Indian places before I settled on which is my favorite but this was definitely a great start. But regardless, I will be back for more! read more

Food with great flavor. Everything I try at Anokha is amazing. I have had vegetarian dishes, seafood dishes, and chicken dishes. All of the meals have uniquely amazing flavors. The service can be hit or miss. It took us about 25 minutes to get our check one time. We are not really sure what happened, but we are pretty sure our waiter left in the middle of our meal. I would recommend that the actual hostess puts your name on the waiting list because we have been there a couple of times when someone else says they will seat us and found out our name was not on the official list. read more

I love walking into a restaurant and just having to stop and take a deep breath to enjoy the scents wafting from the kitchen and surrounding tables. Indian restaurants in particular are good for that because the spices used tend to be very bright and vivid and Anokha is a good example of this. After a brief wait for a table- unsurprising for a party of six at 7:30 on a Saturday- we were settled and handed menus after which point decisions were made rather swiftly. Entertainingly, half the table ended up ordering Chicken Tikka Masala at varying degrees of spice [better when spicier, I feel, it loses something when served thoroughly mild] and everyone had an order of some sort of naan. The aloo gobi and saag paneer were very flavorful [both splendid on naan or the rice], and my vegetable pakora from the vegetarian appetizer sampler were splendid, though I found the samosas weren't quite as tasty as some I've had, though they were certainly respectable. The kheer for dessert was interesting- less sweet and cardamom-y than I expected but a pleasant take on the dish. Sadly, my order of raita got lost in the kerfluffle of a full house but they took it off the bill without even being asked, and all was well. My favorite Indian restaurant in the Richmond area. It's a little pricey but average price for Indian. Over the years Anokha has been very consistent in quality of food and service. I recognize one of the head waiters from probably 5 years and I think that is a good thing. I usually go in a group and we'll get regular and garlic naans and share dishes. I'm partial to the paneer mahkni which is kind of like a tikka masala sauce with the indian cheese. The different creamy sauces and curries have been good with chicken, lamb and goat. The tandoori meats have been good, although not my favorite items. The fried cauliflower with sauce is so yummy (I think it is the lasooni ghobi). Their "hot" is hot, especially in the chicken Chettinadu. I wish it was a little bit less expensive and closer to the city but still end up here every few months. Keep up the good work! read more

Last night me and my friend visited this place for dinner. Hostess was very welcoming. They offered us there new menu. Our server Karan explained us the new menu and also suggested to try out few dishes from there new menu. We loved there green coriander and ajwain seeds paratha from the new menu it was delicious and also tried one vegetable dish from the new menu which was the combination of okra and paneer was good too.
