Great lunch here! We got the butter chicken and saffron chicken. The flavor of the saffron chicken dish was perfect. Balance of savory and spicy. They have a spice level of 1 to 6. I chose 5 and it was a nice spiciness to it, but I felt I would be ok to try 6 next time. I love how they cut their chicken pieces, it's thick and juicy. Lunch comes with so much food: soup or salad, entree, basmati rice, naan and chutney. We were stuffed. Service was great. Food takes some time to come out, so not as quick as you want for lunch if you're in a time crunch. It was my first time ever eating at an Indian cuisine and I am not disappointed. I will return. What a treat to find such a great Indian restaurant in Richmond, VA. The group started with a sharing of a selection on tandoori; lamb and chicken. Very tender and just a perfect sampler. I ordered the Lamb Vindaloo, which was not actually on the menu but they made it for me without hesitation. I had that with rice, raita and garlic naan. It was very good and I enjoyed it immensely. By far my favorite restaurant in Richmond. The staff always remembers my family and I when we come in, even customers they've seen once before. They are super friendly and have very quick service. I always get the Chicken Tikka Platter with medium sauce and it has all the flavor and spice you could want in a meal. It leaves me wanting more even when I am full. I recommend you go during lunch time, as they provide an appetizers (salad or soup), free basmati rice, naan bread, and a sweet treat at the end of your meal. They only have one soup offered for the day soup as well as the dessert. We love their coconut lime soup the best but they have also had tomato, and chicken and spinach soup. My favorite dessert of theirs is the mango pudding, but they also provide rice pudding or a donut. I want to give them 5 stars but my son wasn't happy with his butter chicken, one of our items was missing from the order and the free dessert they sent us was so small I preferred to have paid for the full size. Technically I would give them 3 stars, however the garlic naan was pretty good, but the piece de resistance the crab masala was to die for! I was delighted! It had plenty of crab meat, flavorful and delectable! The crab masala kept me from lowering the rating. I will definitely return and try some of the other dishes, but my favorite is the crab masala. I had not had this dish in years and to my surprise I saw it on their menu and immediately had to have it. I do enjoy this Indian spot but nothing separates it from your typical Indian restaurant. I like the chicken tikka masala here even though the portion isn't all that big. It comes with 6-7 little pieces of chicken. The service is good. I have been here twice, both times after the coronavirus outbreak. I have been told that Anokha was completely packed for lunch and dinner before the pandemic. That means the restaurant can handle more of a crowd as things continue to shift to more normalcy overtime. The naan is always warm and very tasty. I love that there is a complimentary dessert at the end of the meal. It's a great, refreshing touch. The owner of this restaurant is very friendly and makes the experience enjoyable. Went here Saturday night for dinner! A friend and I didn't have reservations and it was packed around 6:30pm, so I highly recommend making them. I ordered their version of chaat papri for an appetizer. It had the perfect amount of spice in it but I feel like it was kind of lacking in potatoes, tomatoes etc. It had a lot of those crunchy noodle looking things. They also give you house naan with three different dipping sauces. All the sauces were yummy! For my entree, I ordered the lamb tikki masala (medium heat) and my friend ordered the chicken tiki masala (hot heat). My medium sauce heat was perfect! It was very flavorful and the perfect amount of heat. My lamb was a little over cooked but nothing to fret about. My friends chicken was cooked perfectly though! The chicken was so nice and tender! His sauce was super hot, too hot for my taste but tasty nonetheless. It also comes with basmati rice. My friend also ordered dessert for us. Mango and rice pudding. The mango pudding was delicious!! Incredible! The food was insanely good! This is one of my favorite Indian restaurants. - Palak Chatt: the perfect appetizer, a must get. It is fried spinach with a sweet chutney and creamy yogurt sauce with red onion. The spinach is fried perfectly so it is still light but so crispy. The sweet and creamy sauces with the sharp onion make it incredibly delicious. - Malai Kofta: this dish has balls made of raisins and cashews covered in a creamy paneer sauce. The sauce was so tasty and the balls were so unique and subtlety sweet. Loved this dish! - Saag: creamy spinach with your choice of protein. We got the chicken and it was delicious. The saag had a great flavor and the texture was so smooth. - Also got the biryani with lamb and the mattar paneer (peas in a creamy sauce). Best meal of a recent visit to Glen Allen, Virginia. Anokha gets 5 stars in every category for me. Delicious food, excellent service, competitive prices and COVID cautious. The restaurant is located in a strip mall on a major street with plenty of parking right outside. Tables were spread out and we were seated at a distance from other occupied tables. Getting straight to the food, I enjoyed some delicious Samosas which were stuffed full of flavorful potatoes and vegetables, they were perfectly cooked as they came out crispy but not over greasy. Lamb Rogan Josh was my entree choice and I was beyond pleased. Again, extremely flavorful, spice level just where I wanted it and a great sized portion leaving plenty of leftovers to go. The service was excellent as we were never short on Naan Bread, dipping sauces or basmati rice. Out waited even touched up our leftovers with fresh rice and boxed it up perfectly. At Anokha, the wait staff was constantly attentive and very friendly, which alone is a huge plus in my book. But my favorite part, the Lamb Tikka Masala, was absolutely to die for! The lamb was incredibly tender and the tomato cream pureed sauce was delicious with all of the divine spices and flavors coming through. They offer a spice level ranging from 1 to 6. This is one of my favorite places to eat in all of Richmond! My husband treated me to lunch and I was blown away by how much food we received for 10 bucks each! I opted for the mixed Lentils and my husband choose to eat the Patia with Lamb. I was shocked to discover my $10 dollar lunch included: all you can eat basmati rice & Naan bread. I also received a side dish,(which changes daily because its made with love by the chef)salad and a dessert! The staff was friendly and treated us like royalty while we dined. We have been looking for a nice Indian restaurant since moving to the area two years ago. And then, Covid. But it was our anniversary so we ventured out. They had a decent wine list and beer supply, along with a few fun cocktails. I went with Prosecco. As soon as we ordered drinks they brought out some naan with three dipping sauces. All were excellent . For an appetizer we shared the potato spinach pancakes and they were delish. We shared a vegetable biryani and a chicken in saffron sauce. I caved in and said "yeah sure, medium". The food arrived and sure enough it was medium spice! The waiter got a good laugh at our American pallet adjusting to bold flavors of India. But unlike redneck uncultured swine, you'll have to do better than that to break us. We drank probably four glasses of water to quell the spice. It was delicious. Food with flavor! You don't eat Indian food for bland safe flavors; you eat Indian food to have your tongue feel like its exploding! You should still taste your meal two hours after you ate it. I had never had Indian food prior to this experience but I trusted this recommendation from my friends who seemed to be experts since they had been to many great indian restaurants in the past and have also had homemade indian food countless times. This place offers great Indian food. Everything was very tasty and the service was superb! The naan here is the best I have ever had. It was perfectly soft with a considerable amount of crunch as well. I ordered the chicken tikka masala and the sauce it came in was just unbelievably flavorful with such an interesting mix of spices. This place is very clean and has a great modern atmosphere. The servers here are always wonderfully attentive even while the restaurant is packed. They are all very nice and polite. Their curries are all delicious and are by far the best in Richmond. During my last visit, my group came for dinner and ordered samosas, tandoori chicken, saffron chicken, coastal shrimp curry, salmon masala, lamb mushroom curry, chicken tikka masala, and garlic naan. The saffron chicken, salmon masala, and chicken tikka masala are my favorites since they come in a very creamy and aromatic sauce. So delicious. This is my first experience with Indian food and with a sensitive stomach I was nervous about trying something new. Immediately when we sat down a basket of tandoori fresh made naan appeared with a dipping tray of three sauces. I thought of investing in a tandoori oven but upon investigating online I found out it cost ~ $1500. The waiters are very courteous and helpful in telling you about the menu. I ordered the vegetarian chettinda curry and it was so good. A little spicy but nothing a Minnesotan wouldn't be able to eat. To accompany the main event I ordered the garlic naan which complemented the curry in every way. The people I was with all gushed over the quality of food and started asking when we were coming back. I tend to choose the chicken tikka masala which has a wonderful complexity of flavors. My husband usually will choose the lamb rogan josh. We have started trying new entrees along with various appetizers. The appetizer sampler and vegetable pakoras along with the variety of chutneys are delicious. The cauliflower appetizers have been very good too. At lunch time your choice of entree comes with a choice of soup or salad, along with a side dish, basmati rice, naan, and a dessert. All this at a very reasonable price. My husband tried the Goat Curry yesterday, and although he liked the flavor, it was difficult to eat because there were many bones. It's been a while since I've been to Anokha since I don't get out to Short Pump often. I remembered it as one of Richmond's best Indian restaurants, but that's not what we experienced this time. The surly greeter made us wonder if we were welcome, but a friendly waiter made up for it by cheerfully taking a drink order. The food came out quickly, and it was reasonably good but far from the excellent food I was used to. The Chicken Tika Masala was particularly bland. Hopefully, we caught them on a bad day, but we will be more wary than excited if we ever give it another try. read more
