Ankers has now been providing consistent quality car for my household vehicles for years at this point. We feel very fortunate that we have access to such a trustworthy and effective shop. In addition to some of the specifics mentioned in my previous review (see below), there have been several instances where Ankers could have just recommended the more expensive route to fix something, but chose to allow us to make an informed decision by trying alternatives or doing things incrementally so that it could be determined if a smaller fix would suffice. All this without sacrificing the integrity of the car, though. It is such a relief to know you are going to receive competent and honest work on one of the major financial investments you make: your vehicle. I can't recommend them highly enough. read more

We go to Ankers regularly to service our (gracefully) aging Prius v. I have found them to be honest, reasonable on pricing, and especially good for moderate to major repairs. They recently did an excellent bumper replacement - painting the day before so it only took a few hours. read more

We had a friend of our daughter visit from out of town, coming in for New Year's Eve. While driving here, her Jeep gave her serious trouble on the highway, showing signs of the "Jeep wobble". Turns out that she needed new inner and outer tie rods, and with the holiday looming, we were worried that we wouldn't be able to get the vehicle serviced. We dropped it off the night before and Dave was able to get it all fixed up before shutting down for New Year's Eve! Recently, we moved to the Schenectady area after a lifetime on the West coast near San Francisco. I'd retired, closed my Auto Repair shop after 41 years, and moved 3,000 miles East with my spouse to be near family. Grasping the fact that I could no longer avoid recognizing that I was a senior citizen, with some mobility and health issues, I manned up and made plans to get the car looked over. Being on the 'other' side of the service counter was a "new kid in class' sort of trepidation for me, but it is what it is. So we made plans to get the car inspected and serviced. Having heard great things about Ankers Auto Service, we made an appointment. Dave was affable, a good listener, and I was immediately put at ease that this could be a good fit. For the sake of brevity, I will try to only hit the high points. We are talking ' Old School' here. They performed a full service and safety inspection, plus did the NY required annual inspection. They took care of a few small maintenance/repair items and the best part was they gave the vehicle that I had purchased without having a pre-purchase inspection ( out of necessity), a glowing overall bill of health. To say this was a big thing, would be an understatement. No upsells. No " You'd better sit down to hear the news." What we did get was a bill that was way less than I had anticipated and some flowers to take home to the missus. I think this firm is a "Bit of 'Alright' as they say. Car had a dent in the drivers side door. We got an estimate without having to make an appointment, and dropped the car off about a week later. Estimate very reasonable. Work done promptly and areas ready before the promised date. Excellent workmanship and very courteous service. Car looks like new and cost was slightly less than estimated. I highly recommend Anker's Auto Service. I have an older car, ( an old "cream puff", an older car owned an elderly couple with low mileage ) by choice, and Dave and his team keep it running. If I call with an issue they always seem to be able to get me an appointment the next day. I only have Anker's auto work on my car because I have such trust in their work. Dave always gives an estimate of the work to be done, so there are no surprises. I typically don't leave reviews, much less a 5 star review because I think everyone has room for improvement, but today is the exception to both. A year ago I took my car to one of those chain places for an inspection. They wouldn't pass my car telling me that I needed four new brakes and rotors as well as for new tires . I didn't know about the brakes but I knew my tires were fine as they had less than 20,000 miles on them and I could see for myself that they had good tread left. So I walked out and made an appointment with Ankers who I had heard great things about. Well I did need new brakes but only on the back and my tires were fine. The cost of the back brakes and rotors were almost 1/2 of what the other place wanted to charge. Just this past weekend I had to have my car jumped. Knowing the battery was the original and at least 6 -7 years old I decided to have the battery replaced. Ankers wasn't open so I went to another local establishment who has been in business for years . I was told I needed a new alternator, a new battery and 4 new tires . I may be auto illiterate but I know my car wouldn't have passed inspection again just 2 weeks prior if my tires were bad. Again, I walked out and made an appointment with Ankers for this morning. Lo and behold my alternator was fine . All I needed was a new battery which I had intended on replacing anyway. Dave is the most honest , efficient and reasonably priced auto service shop In the capital district, and I will never take my vehicles anywhere else again. Brought my Mazda 3 in for the AC to completely restored. Dave (the owner, is a super nice man, very responsive). I was missing a part that was needed for the repair to be done and the crew at Ankers made the calls to have the part delivered ASAP! I am glad I went and I am very happy with the service Dave and Anker provided. Dave not only performed the inspection, recognized and helped fix a problem, but also gave me helpful suggestions on car maintenance. I am updating this review because I recently received a letter of apology as well as a check from their manager. In the letter he said he was able to track my order history and realized the price was indeed higher than expected. I feel they're sincere and honest and willing to correct their mistakes. I will not delete my previous review but I appreciate their reflection and apology. It was about a year ago when I went there. I was going there to change the muffler. They said they didn't have the specific type for my car and that they need to find it somewhere else. So the guy made a few calls and in the last call he seemed to find the exact muffle for my car. He asked how much was that. I was just standing next to him and i heard the guy in the phone said 40. The guy was kinda shock for how cheap it is and asked if that includes shipping something like that. I can't remember exactly but it is either it's included or the shipping is almost neglectable. Then they got the muffler shipped to that place real quick and put it on my car. The bill came to around $300! I was totally shocked and they were just saying this is what it is and the muffler has to be shipped from somewhere else blablablah. There was nothing else i could do. I remembered I paid the bill and went back to my car, crying. That was the first time in my life that I need to go to an auto repair and I hated that experience so much. They have the newspapers and photos and all that kind of stuff sticking on their wall showing that it has been an old and honest store. BUT OMG I just hated it sooo much. STAY AWAY!!! read more

Our car exhaust had become very noisy during a 7-hour journey to visit Union College. We had just one day, on a tight schedule, to get this repaired before returning home. Not know where to turn, we did a web search and saw that Anker's was quite close to the college. We phoned Anker's from the campus at 8 a.m., knowing we had to be back for a meeting at 9 a.m. "Don't worry,' they said, "We'll get you back over there in plenty of time." So we drove over to Ankers and they immediately drove us back to campus, then they got to work on the the exhaust. We assumed that the repair would be a temporary patch that would hold long enough for us to get home and arrange for a permanent repair. But when we collected the car later that day we were delighted to learn that THIS would be a long-term repair: there would be no need to have this redone once we got home! We were amazed at the staff's willingness to help us on such short notice and to take such good care of us. Their positive attitude and solid workmanship turned a difficult situation around in record time, and we enjoyed a quiet drive back home! read more

I've known that Anker's Auto Service has provided quality automotive service and honest, supportive, friendly customer service for many years, but recently my opinion was reaffirmed. I reside almost three hours away from Schenectady but annually bring my vehicle to Anker's Auto Service for inspection and more. Before my annual visit, my vehicle exhibited trouble with its exhaust. I took my car to be conveniently serviced in my hometown. They told me that I needed a new catalytic converter and the cost would be over $600. Naturally, that didn't sit well with me or my bank account. I called Dave and reported the findings of my local auto service provider. He said that if the catalytic converter needed to be replaced, the quote provided was accurate. He continued to ask me additional questions and explained that given the mileage and years on the car, the converter should be in good condition. He wondered if the flange needed to be replaced instead and recommended I bring the car to him at my convenience. I did. Dave's assessment was correct. The catalytic converter was in very good condition but the flange needed to be replaced and he had the kit to make the repairs. Thanks Dave and crew. When my car started making an usual sound, I considered making the 4 hour trip home to go to "my guy." Thank goodness I tried Anker's instead. If I had been available, they would have given me a same-day appointment. Rich was very helpful on the phone and even more so in person. I didn't catch the name of the man that fixed my car, but he was just as great. I arrived a little early, but they got me right in and I was out in an hour. It was a small fix and Rich wasn't even going to charge me--apparently the look on my face said I wasn't going to leave without paying, because he agreed to let me pay a "lift fee." I was so grateful to them for being honest, as I know nothing about cars. For being a first time customer, I was given a $10 off coupon for my next visit. Side note: I was a little nervous about the neighborhood the shop is in, but I was quickly reassured by the friendly faces and the walls FULL of thank you notes from grateful customers. Amazing service. Our Highlander broke down and fearing the worst we took it to Anker's for repair. They saw us first thing in the morning and the repair was relatively minor and we were on our way in a few hours. Price was very reasonable. I emailed Dave Sunday night and he replied first thing in the morning and gave us his first appointment time. Brought my 04 Sebring in beginning of Nov. Needed. among other thing's, an alignment. They charged me $117.00 and, they only did the front end. Have to do the rear first! I wasted my m oney there. I won't even go back to have them the job right. I am sticking with Sears!!!!!!!!!! Now I have to go back. My oil light is coming on again after the put in an oil pan gasket. Meant to write this awhile ago. Go there at your own risk!! Went there for one thing to be replaced on my vehicle and asked them to check the vehicle and let me know if anything needed to be serviced, let me know and tell me how much it would be. I could not have anything extra done that day as I did not have the time or money available. They went ahead and performed a service without informing of the price and to get my approval. I was expected to pay it and they offered me time to pay it. Which I did. I learned from another car business that NYS law states if a customer is not given a price quote or authorizes the work to be done after they know the cost then the customer does not have to pay for it. Well basically I was told "you don't expect us to do the work for free". Well if the customer does not have the opportunity to approve the work that is what the law states should happen. Rather than admit their mistake I was given a refund and on the back of the check it was written that by endorsing/ cashing the check I agree to take my vehicle elsewhere for future work. Very sad in today's economy as smaller shops should be more concerned with keeping loyal customers rather than alienating them! read more
