The condition of the place is beyond horrible. I'm not usually the kind of guy that would mind a lil dirt here and there but I physically could not stay in the building for longer than a few minutes. The smell of old urine and fecal matter was so strong that it made me almost threw up. There was also animals that were not supposed to be outside in 100° Weather like this black cat that was beside a pile of waste in the front. It's not right to have conditions like this. There was even poop on the floor and other workers were nonchalant about anything. I guess their olfactory senses were shot because God it smelled like a pile of corpses dripped in rotten sewage. Fix the conditions and treat the animals better. No living creature deserves to live in these kind of conditions. The smell also sank into my clothes. Never will I go back..I honestly wished the city would do something. read more

This place should be demolished and rebuilt bigger, with more employee's who know how to communicate amongst each other and with everyone on the phone or in person. Sure some might give this shelter a 4 or 5 star but that's because they found their lost pet or found a companion. My 2 year old Catahoula Leppard dog was to be locked up for biting someone in which I called it in and in 4 days later someone from the pound shows up and told me to take my dog in myself. Let's just say I had been trying to get a hold of someone at the pound before during and after the heavy snow fall. Let's just say that I picked up my baby girl lethargic, starved, and scared to death. I have take photos and videos and of the fresh injury to her right paw. Do Not trust your pet here at this shelter. I'm surprised that the city or county has not shut down the facility. read more

Alright, I found "the one." She's an adorable Yorkie-mix that I've nicknamed "Yorkasaurus" (don't worry, that's not going to be her actual name). Anyways, after visiting this place nearly everyday for the last three weeks, I decided to take one of their K9 cuties home. They started to notice I was frequenting the shelter and one of the agents would talk to me and ask if I'd found one to get yet. He said he's adopted his three dog-babies there, which says something good to me about them. Also, when I was signing papers, they called my apartment complex to make sure I really was allowed to have another pet. I normally would find this annoying as my apartment people are pretty gross and I prefer not to have them tell me what I can and can't do. Yet, I really appreciated that the shelter cared enough to find out where their animal was going and to make sure it never has to find its way back to them. Another thing that happened on my most recent visit was heartwarming. A man in a cowboy had came in furious. I let him go ahead of me since I noticed adoptions take them quite a while to do (I waited nearly 30 minutes in line last week behind a lady adopting two dogs). He said that he'd received a letter that his Chihuahua-Pug dog was picked up. He'd apparently given the dog to a neighbor & that person was neglectful. The dog had been at the shelter for a month. He told them he'd pay whatever charges there were; he just wanted his baby back home. They verified all the information he gave them and waived all the fees for him since this was a first time offense and he lived outside of city limits. Then, they brought out the dog (one I'd walked by several times in my visits) and the reunion was awesome. The man went from irate to overly joyful and apologizing to the dog and then he was on his way. Anyways, this place totally earned that fifth star. :) read more

San Angelo Animal Shelter is one of the cleanest, well organized city shelters I've ever seen. I've been a volunteer w/the SPCA for years (over a decade) and never have I seen a city shelter in a midsized Texas town that is modeled more like a "humane shelter" than San Angelo Animal Shelter. Most shelters I have been too are some run down, grimy cinder blocked building in the boonies. While San Angelo Animal Shelter is outside of town (North), it's not to far from Howard College and the subdivision of Paulann. The Cat area is clean, and large with individual cages w/plexi-glass walls so you can peek in, and one large room for social cats to spend time together. The dogs are located on the right side of the building (if facing the entrance). It's well cleaned, and maintained. No shelter is a "joy" to visit, it is very heart wrenching to see them huddled in their cages waiting for someone wonderful enough to love them and take them home, but they have clean water, food, a raised cot to lay on, and the building is well lit so it's not a dank and dark "dungeon" of a building at all! BE PREPARED though- it is a concrete building and the dogs will bark as soon as you come in, it's VERY loud when they have lots of dogs. The variety of dogs up for adoption is amazing. They do have the typical over flow of pit mixes, lab mixes, and shepherd mixes, but I've been pleasantly surprised to see basset hounds, Boston terriers, pekingese, chihuahua mixes (and full blood), hounds, Newfoundland and the list goes on. I used to frequent the shelter every day for many months when we first moved here. I used to foster for the SPCA in the state we moved to Texas from, but the Humane Society (housed inside the City Animal Shelter), does not allow the freedom of foster choices like the SPCA does (i am able to foster young dogs or litters of puppies because my adult dogs tolerate young dogs- adult dogs- they do not). so i felt a bit lost when i first moved here and couldn't foster. After visiting the shelter many many times, and giving those sweet dogs as much love as a i could before some of them inevitably were put down, i came across what looked to be a chihuahua dachshund mix. she was so sweet, about a year old and just looked so scared and confused. My husband and i were able to come back and visit her in their "meet-n-greet" rooms. We knew she would make a great companion and wonderful addition to our family of kids and other dogs. we adopted her, and the Shelter staff were WONDERFUL! they had an Xray done on her because the vet suspected she was already spayed, she was, so her adoption fee was only $4.00. We named her Peggy Sue and she has been a great addition to our home. she's such a wonderfully gentle little dog. very sweet even with the smallest of children, calm, quiet, and loving. Everyone that meets her...LOVES her. and I've had so many people tell me they wish they could take her home with them...but she's here to stay. This was 8 years ago! and i plan to make our next companion a shelter dog from this wonderful shelter in San Angelo as well. ((NOTE)): San Angelo City Animal Shelter has a DROP OFF section on the LEFT SIDE of the building. Living in Paulann- the subdivision BY the shelter- we get SO MANY dogs out here in our neighborhood that were more than likely dumped out on the highway by the shelter, thinking they would be picked up somehow by the staff there. The shelter HAS drop off boxes, you put the dog in the 'box' through a plexi-glass door, and the box door locks on it's own, so no one can take the dog back out. it's SAFER than dumping a dog on the highway! i think it's pretty disgusting to abandon a dog anyways- but at least by using the drop boxes (which are just a section of individual cages) at least your unwanted pet is safe at the shelter and will be looked over the next morning. read more

I caution anyone who is taking there animal to a shelter, Do not take them here. If you are a owner and sign your animal over to them, they can euthanize them the same day. This is what happened to my animals 4 of them were three month old puppies. All were good dogs and should have never been there, so please find another alternative. read more
