All Kind Animal Initiative - Pet Adoption & Resource Center

All Kind Animal Initiative

All Kind animal initiative is Abilene's new animal shelter. The old location was SO run down, so…read morethis new location is just wonderful. Since everything is brand new, it's all nice and shiny. I hope they can keep it that way. We are now a no kill shelter, and I appreciate that. I went in looking for a missing cat. They pull up a screen that shows you all the animals that have been brought in. So convenient, and you don't have to go look in all the cages. Three cheers for no kill!

What Happened to My Friend's Dog Was Heartbreaking and Should Never Happen Again…read more I'm writing this to support my friend Mandy, who went through something no pet owner should ever experience. Mandy trusted someone to temporarily care for her dog, Zena. Instead of caring for her, this person dropped Zena off at a shelter without Mandy's permission. even though Zena was microchipped with Mandy's contact information and had all her belongings with her. The shelter never attempted to contact Mandy or verify the microchip. By the time she found out where Zena was, she was told her dog had already been euthanized. Mandy wasn't notified, wasn't contacted, and wasn't given the chance to be there or even claim Zena's remains. Zena deserved love, compassion, and dignity, not to spend her last moments surrounded by strangers. My friend is heartbroken, and honestly, anyone would be. I'm sharing this because what happened was wrong, and people deserve to know. Our animals rely on us, and we rely on shelters and caretakers to treat them with care, respect, and basic communication. This situation failed at every level. Justice for Zena.

Bird Rehabilitation Center - Brought in a baby quail w/a broken leg

Bird Rehabilitation Center

(1 review)

The Bird Rehabilitation Center is a wildlife rehabilitation unit for injured wild birds. They're…read moreamazing and so wonderful. Ryan King is knowledgeable, helpful, friendly, and a gift from God helping these innocent creatures. If you're unsure if the bird is injured or an abandoned baby too young to survive on its own, call the bird rehabilitation center [325-437-4941] & describe the situation, offer to send them a video, picture or FaceTime so they can help you determine if you should bring the bird in before you disturb the bird. If it's outside of business hours [open daily 9am-4pm] & you're unsure what to do & want to get the bird out of harms way -- call, leave a VM, then try to use a thin shirt to place gently over the bird to then pick up the bird while hopefully causing minimal stress to the bird so the bird doesn't expend energy trying to get away especially on an insured leg or wing or something. Don't give food or water unless rehabilitators instruct you to do so or if they're closed and you have to keep the bird overnight you could put a little small dish of water but only when you can supervise because otherwise if you leave the water in there the bird could drown depending on its degrading mobility. Make sure to keep the bird warm especially if it's a baby. Use rabbit nest stuff you can get from any pet store if you want to provide it a place to burrow and be comfy until bird rehabilitation center opens. This place is NOT for your family bird ie not domesticated birds. When you see the Abilene Zoo building on your left go another ~ 100m and you'll see the bird rehabilitation center sign on a gate also to your left. When you get there. Park in front of the gate, call, & wait in your car. They'll come out with an intake form you will fill out with your name, address, where you found the bird, & if you know how the injury occurred. They'll then take the form & bird from you. If possible, they'll release the bird back to where you found it if that's a safe place. Donations are always welcome & it's the kind thing to do. So bring an envelope of cash or go back another time & drop off some money if you aren't able to do so when you bring an injured or abandoned baby bird. https://abilenezoo.org/save-the-animals/bird-rehabilitation-center/

I do not recommend this facility to anyone. We adopted a puppy end of June from the facility - they…read morewere very nice during the adoption. We were advised we could bring her back if things didn't work out. No time period was placed on the return. In Jan we called saying things were not working out - they said bring her back. We took her over there - then they became rude. Said they don't take back after 3 mos - nothing has ever been said about must return by 3 months. No suggestions on what to do. We have a dog that is not working out and I guess I must now call the pound and have her put down -- sad. She's a good dog, just not working out with us. By the way they have room to take her. We agreed to do a drop off fee- still refused. Unless your 100% --- do not adopt from this facility.

Sorry, but they have terrible attitudes. Recently after picking up a dog running across the hiway,…read moreand taking it to them, they REFUSED to take her. The door was locked, and a sign stating no surrenders before 1 p.m. They didn't care it wasn't my dog, that I was only trying to be a good human. One worker told me "this happens every day" Really? Isn't that the definition of insanity? How about we CHANGE POLICY then? After a lucky call, her owner was located. She had been missing two weeks. Earlier this week, there was a news story about dogs being dumped in Brown county. I wondered if any of those had been refused at the shelter door as well. I realize it's a donation private shelter, and they do what they can, but maybe it's time Brownwood has a city shelter that is open full time as we have so many irresponsible people here. It would be great to see legislation passed that unless you were a licensed breeder, your dogs must be spayed or neutered. Same for cats. This problem is preventable, but no one wants to change, seems common here.
