The hotel is really nice. We had to stay here, while painting our hotel. We are satisfied.

Alverbank Country House Hotel - Entrance to room

We stayed for one night as part of a planned wedding reception in July 2012…read more The hotel itself is difficult to find and literally if you blink you will miss the sign that is on the main Stokes Bay Road. The driveway leads to a bridge that then opens up into the front of hotel car park, spaces enough for about 15 cars maximum. The Alverbank Country Hotel itself is very well presented and welcoming from the outside. The hotel comprising of 10 rooms, a breakfast room, function room and a bar area. There is also a spacious garden with great views of the sea water. It is clear that The Alverbank has been converted into a hotel and as such the rooms tend to be on the small side. I believe all rooms are on-suite with either views of the car park or the sea view. The room is very small with just enough room for bags - but it is well equipped with the usual tea/coffee facilities and wardrobe. The room we stayed in was room 7, which overlooks the car park which can be very noisy - particularly in the morning when the garbage collection and delivery vans arrive. We had a double bed that was very comfortable to sleep in and the quality of the sheets and bedding really makes a difference - I had a very good nights sleep with the exception of the noise from outside at 7am that woke me up. The on-suite bathroom is also very small with just enough room to fit the sink, toilet and shower into the space. It could do with some modernisation all round especially for the money we paid £95 per night. I would stay again at the hotel if I was in the area and certainly recommend it to friends. It is a real shame that the hotel isn't modernised and really could do with the investment in areas. A good sized and tasty breakfast is available in the morning however a little annoying having to leave the breakfast room and walk across a corridor to get the hot food - shame it is not table service.

I decided to have a solo getaway at the Queens Hotel. I parked my car right at the front, and was…read morepromptly greeted by a bellhop. (Whom I apologize, at first believed him to be a thief). I checked in and was given a complimentary pen, which was nice but I already have several. The same wonderful bellhop, Matthew, helped move my car. There was another man there. He was condescending and seemed to want to try to check in before I did. Although I sensed competition in him, so I ended up racing him to our separate rooms (I was in room 426 and he was in room 425). The room itself was cozy, and with a minor adjustment I was able to see the ocean. The bed was very very soft. I made sure of that. I also added my own personal touch to the room. The TV remote had a good signal (I made sure of that too) and when I picked up the phone I was greeted with a happy hello. I had trouble finding the bathroom to take a bath, but I quickly found the solution. There was a slight wait in the buffet hall, but that also moved quickly, with a little help from myself. The man in room 425 was also there, and challenged me to an eating competition (which I should tell you I won). There was oysters, and I ate several, but I feel they may have been a bit off. There was loud music at 12:05 am, but I very politely asked them to be quiet. In the end, five star stay! Will be back!

When looking for a hotel in Portsmouth, there are not a whole lot of options on the water, but this…read moreis one of the few truly English hotels left in the area. This historic hotel is a lovely walk back in time with a staff that is top notch. The service here was impeccable from the moment we walked in the door and it is something the management touts as a basis for teamwork. My room was lovely in the small, quaint British way. The bed was very comfortable. There was a desk and a nice wardrobe for my clothes. The window at the end of the room looked out over the harbor and at night the light from the street would shine on the ceiling in a lovely pattern. It was unusually hot for Portsmouth and the management made sure to have a fan in my room which cooled things down perfectly. The bathroom had all of the amenities, but the shower was a bit tight. I had to strike a yoga pose in order to shave my legs. Dual purpose shower! The bar and restaurant were very accommodating and decently priced. They had an outdoor BBQ and seating in the garden. My favorite meal was the Sunday carvery (brunch in the US). All you can eat fresh meat carved to order dished up with veggies and potatoes and dessert. It was exciting to have my first taste of Yorkshire pudding which was nothing like pudding, but delicious nonetheless. The location of the hotel was perfect, right across from the large city park and amusement park. It was an easy walk from the hotel to many restaurants, shops and bars. There's a waterside walkway that was perfect for morning runs. Taxis were plentiful for going to the farther points at the other end of town or if we were just being lazy. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone that wants a true British experience while in the adorable town of Portsmouth. Tell them VB sent you!

Room Clean, quiet, super hot water in the shower and aromatherapy toiletries in the bath. Gym Apparently small towns buddy up with the big hotels and the hotel gyms are well outfitted. Classes are offered. Pool is decent as well as a steam room and spa. All the machines and weights you need to help fight off jet lag. Bar dining area How is it that molten chocolate cake with it moltey chocolatey goodness topped with a dollop of vanilla ice cream makes the preceding meal go away... and quickly. Even after finding the crusted, fire of the gods fused on crumb of food on the bottom of my spoon... the chocolate still made me happy. I did try to not lick the speed bump of food on the bottom of my spoon. Harbor town, they specialize in fish so i ordered the sole fillet in a wine sauce. What i get is a rolled up sole fillet smothered in something of a hollandaise sauce... luckily it didn't splash over onto my boiled new potatoes. Bland would have been an undeserving rave review for the flavorless tornado rolls of fish I was served. I had such high hopes too after the mini terrine of seafood chowder - hot- with topped with an over cooked half strip of bacon... pancetta for the gourmands. Overall come for the gym and nicely appointed rooms... tomorrow night I explore the tastes of Portsmouth thank you Yelp for expanding your domination of the Universe.
