Today's mid-September sunshine made for a perfect day for a drive up to Angeles Crest Creamery for a visit. We were there for one of their "open ranch days", which basically means they open up their land for visitors to just come and hang out and just be one with the animals and the terrain. They also host visitors for other activities, including hikes with the goats while they graze, but we found the open ranch day to be perfect for us, as we just wanted to see what the whole operation was all about.
First off, I am not an outdoorsy person, which I know is like a crime for a Los Angeleno, but I just really have a thing for clean nails and tall shoes, okay? But I had to make an exception for this place when I read about it in the LA Times a few weeks back, because it sounded such a great thing that Gloria and Christian were doing, and I felt inspired to support their farm. Plus, goats are the cutest.
So we picked up some lunch from around the Silverlake area and drove straight up. Less than an hour and a half later, we pulled up to the start of their driveway and parked alongside the highway, from which you can see their little red barn below. I missed a short walk that Gloria lead around the property, which started promptly at 11 (the open hours were 11am-2pm), so I don't have much concept of how much land the whole ranch covers, but the immediate area where all the animals reside is very manageable even if you're lazy like I am.
There's the main red barn where the animals wander in and out , with a couple of stalls, one in which an adorably large pig lives. There were also turkeys hanging out here when we visited. A smaller barn to the side of this houses their retail operation. This is where we were able to pick up pint-sized jars of cajeta (slow-cooked absolutely decadent goat milk caramel), the freshest goat cheese (not barnyardy tasting at all), cooked goat meat, salsa, and fresh eggs from their chickens. The prices are pretty reasonable, and you obviously can't beat the freshness.
Get here early in the day if you're interested in purchasing these products! They're small batch and they run out. I made my way over at the end of the visit, and the girls in front of me purchased the last jar of goat cheese. This was devastating, because I had just tasted the glorious sample they provided. The cajeta also ran out way before this, but I had luckily already sneakily purchased a couple of jars from their Facebook page online, as these are shelf stable and shippable. They're cheaper on the ranch though, as they're marked way up for the shipping charge online. I did, however, score a dozen of gorgeous jewel-toned eggs for about the same price I would pay at the farmers' market.
In between these barns, there's a little shaded picnic table where the goats like to congregate, and this is a nice area to just sit and hang out. There are other picnic tables scattered around the property as well. Christian directed us to a particularly well-situated and shaded one about a quarter mile up a gravel path behind the barn, and this was the perfect spot for our lunch. It was so incredibly quiet and serene up there, almost shockingly so at first if you're used to city noise like we are, and such a change from where we live in downtown Pasadena. You can see that they strung up a hammock in the trees nearby, so clearly this is a favorite hangout spot, and it made us feel so welcome that they shared it with us!
After we finished eating, we walked back down to join the group and spent a couple of hours just hanging out with the animals. The goats are super friendly and not aggressive in the least. I admit I was a little skittish at first, but it became immediately obvious how gentle they were, and it was fun to just pet them and watch them interact. What I really fell for though were the horses and donkey in a pen down the path, closer to the driveway entrance. The horses were friendly as well, and one with a chestnut coat was particularly gorgeous. And I made friends withe particularly outgoing and nuzzley donkey.
We drove home enamored with the ranch and our perfect little half-day getaway with the animals. It really is gorgeous out there if you're a proud So Cal resident who loves our weird, deserty terrain as I am. And I can't wait to fry up my eggs for Sunday brunch tomorrow. A big thanks to Gloria and Christian for opening up their home to us and sharing what ranch living is all about. read more
