Long before Shane Co. commercials made me want to jump through the speakers and strangle Tom Shane, I learned that the first rule for dudes in the engagement process is that you need "a guy". None of my buddies were stupid enough to buy a diamond from an actual jewelry store. The only people who buy diamonds from jewelry stores probably have degrees from USC, and we know how stooopid those people are. No my friend, you need "a guy". This means that you are not quite sure of the legality of the business, but you also know that you are getting a first rate diamond. Back in the spring, I had squirrelled away enough discretionary income to warrant shopping for a piece of compressed carbon to place on my girlfriend's left ring finger. I did some research, talked to some people, and received a recommendation from a good friend at the office. This friend spent over 25 years as a cop with the SFPD. Cops know everything about cities. They know where to get the best everything. (And I don't mean donuts! This joke is so old and tired. These brave souls walk out the door everyday knowing that there is chance that they won't come home, and we grace them with donut jokes. If you do this..STOP.) Anyway John the cop directed me to the Anello Brothers. I called them up, and Barry Anello asked me what I was looking for. I gave his some specs. He then said that he would find some stones, and then call me to come in and look at them. WARNING!!! You have to know a few things about diamonds first. Barry is not there to hold your hand. You have to do some research beforehand. When I went to the actual office I was a little freaked out. He buzzed me and my cop buddy in. The office was about the size of a closet. He went to an alcove where there was a HOOOOGE safe and pulled out some envelopes. I was waiting for some federal law enforcement to come crashing through the windows at any moment because none of this seemed legal. He pulled out the stones, had me look at them through that cool monocle and told me the 5 C's for each stone. I picked one out, but called him later to confirm. From there he asked me how I wanted the stone set. I gave him some more specs and sent a fax of the design my girlfriend wanted for her setting. Barry did everything himself and even added some nice smaller stones. I did not agree to this beforehand, but the added stones made the ring look even better. (At least that's what my fiance's friends tell us.) When the ring was finished, he called again, and I came to pick it up. I won't say how I paid, but some forms of payment are better than others. Barry is not only a great ring maker, but also a discreet business man...wink, wink. When I gave the ring to my girlfriend, and she inexplicably accepted my marriage proposal she was in tears. My fiancee bought my engagement ring from "his guy" (who is a lady in Florida), so, I went to these gentleman to have it sized-- I have a satin finish on my white gold band, which basically means you need to find someone with a laboratory to resize it and re-finish it-- these guys had one, so I went to them. I have been to them twice for ring-related needs, and I love them. I. Love. Them. I love them so much, I am having them make my soon-to-be-husband's wedding band. - THE PRICES ARE AWESOME. I had a complicated and potentially expensive re-sizing ordeal. Barry, you are my guy! Stopped by at the 760 Market building yesterday to drop off two necklaces to get fixed at one of the Jewelry places there, but the door was locked. The people were at lunch. Disappointed, I accidentally ran into Barry in the hallway who mentioned he could probably do the job (albeit he didn't want to take the business away from his comrades). I brought an antique 1940s headband to this place today for inspection, the center piece had come detached during shipment from UK and a few stones had come loose. I was buzzed in and met with a pretty intense cold stare and awkward silence. I explained the situation and one of the brothers took a quick look at the headband and said: "This is custom jewelry." Me: "and..." Guy: "We don't do custom jewelries." Cold stare. Me: "Can you explain exactly what DO you do then?" Guy: "Well." Me: "Do you only resize bands?" Other brother: "We do high-end jewelries." Now if I hadn't read all the reviews it wouldn't have been as funny but since I did do my research before going in, this really sounded like a joke to me. If you think handling sterling silver and gold and "class ring" is such a novel "high-end" job then I really have no words, I'm so sorry that mi metal antique headband wasn't good enough for your Italian humor but at least I was amused, so I thank you for that. I called several jewelers in San Francisco trying to find one that could size my ring on-site. The ring was given to me by my grandmother and I didn't want to risk it getting lost in transport. Most places were extremely expensive, had to be done offsite and would take a WEEK to finish. I finally found Anello brothers: They charged only $30 to size my ring even though it was a challenge since it had to be sized down a few sizes. He not only resized it on site but he did it right in front of me and I was in and out of the door within half an hour. Also, be sure to bring cash. I went in the day before Christmas Eve to have a stone replaced on a ring that belongs to my mom. They were very busy, but the service was still awesome. They fit me in, walked me down the hall to another stones dealer to pick out the right sapphire, brought the ring back and fixed it on the spot. The price was right too. Over all they were both really nice, easy to work with and a really cool slice of SF history as the business has been in the family for a long time. These guys are great! I had a sterling silver ring that I needed to resize and I called around asking for quotes. The Anello brothers gave me the best quote and said they could do it quickly. I stopped over during lunch and, sure enough, they resized it for me on the spot! Took 15 minutes and my ring now fits perfectly! IThe ring was not expensive, but had sentimental value to me so I was very nervous about any anyone altering it (especially with a torch!). But he was very intricate and took a lot of care. Here is the deal. I looked at rings and diamonds for my lovely fiancée at a number of places that have popular names and pay a lot of rent. I was ready to write the big check to make her happy. I was so glad that a I was referred to the Anello Brothers. The Anello Brothers treated me well and were very helpful and honest about the whole process. They found me the diamond I wanted with papers at a price far less than anyone else. They made the whole diamond purchase easy and un-stressful. Than out of the blue before I pulled the trigger on the purchase of the stone I was given a family heirloom and was no longer in need of a diamond; No problem. I purposed with my mom's ring. Fiancée is very happy and is touched by the gift of my mother's ring, but it not exactly what she wanted in terms of the ring structure. No problem. My fiancée and I took the ring from my mom, and some cold from her mom and went back to visit Berry and Rob. They took the stones from my Mom's ring (with her blessing) and built the most beautiful solitary setting for the diamond, built a beaded diamond cut wedding ring and incorporated all the small diamonds my dad added to my mom's ring and re-used gold from the ring to build my wedding ring. My fiancée was very particular about the look, the feel, the size everything about her ring. Again, no problem, they listened to what she wanted and built her the exact ring she wanted. They even did a wax hold of ring for her inspection to put all her trepidation at ease. The first proposal was wonderful, the second proposal was even better. When you fiancée sits in front of the bathroom mirror admiring the ring you gave you her. You know you got it right. If you want to pay more at some glossy store; go for it. You can bring in a picture of a ring or other piece and they can replicate it for you. They custom made my wedding band, my wife's wedding band, and some other pieces of jewelry for us and we love the results. They also worked quickly and were able to complet our orders in the short window we were back in the states before we had to return to South Korea. They will also accept old pieces of jewelry and give you the market price value of the metals and stones, which can really help cut down your cost. I was wandering through the building trying to sell a diamond ring. One of the brothers happened to be walking down the hallway and asked if I needed assistance. I told him I had a diamond engagement ring I wanted to sell and asked if he'd be interested. He wasn't looking for what I had, but offered to help sell it for a small fee. He spent over and hour calling different businesses in the building and beyond, in addition to cleaning it up for showing. I can't imagine how long it would have taken me to find someone willing to match my asking price. In the end, he was able to negotiate pretty close to what I was asking and paid me on the spot. Not only did he save me time and get me almost what I was asking, but hanging out with them and talking about their history in SF was easily worth the finders fee.
