But as you wander around the Church grounds, you'll come across this remarkable memorial that will stop you dead in your tracks. It was constructed to remember the American soldiers lost in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and the War on terror. You'll see hundreds of blank dog tags that represents these deaths. They act as wind chimes when the breezes blow across the Church grounds. On the ground you'll see memorial stones, painted to capture the death toll in America's wars and conflicts over the decades and generations, going back to our nation's inception. The number exceeds 1.3 million from 1775 to the present. Being located near the Freedom Trail, on the grounds of this hallowed piece of American history is about as powerful as things get.

The nine hour tour started off in Boston Massachusetts at the Massachusetts Transportation Center then into northeast Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. This review breaks the New England Sea Coast tour by the three states for easy reading. Massachusetts: Hotel pickup to New Hampshire 286 The tour started when the bus picked us up at the hotel. This was the shuttle bus to the Massachusetts Transportation Building in downtown. This is where we paid the $69 prior to boarding the actual tour bus. The driver, who never gave his name was a knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide. As we left downtown, he told us the facts behind the landmarks we were passing that included the Massachusetts State House, the Old State House, a cemetery, and Boston Commons. After leaving Boston on the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge. Once we passed the Charles River, the driver took a hiatus on talking until we got off Interstate 95 near New Hampshire. As the bus cruised north on Interstate 93 and northeast on Interstate 95; I took in the New England roadside scenery in a very comfortable bus. Usually I get this phobia when I am not in front of the bus. This bus was so comfortable that it was not bothering me being in the middle. New Hampshire : An exit south of the New Hampshire border, the bus turned east on Route 286. In a few minutes we entered New Hampshire where we passed miles of wetlands. Our driver gave one fact after another from New Hampshire is expensive to live in, to most of the lobsters you will eat are male, to if there is a marsh nearby you will have a lot of sea food. When we made the left onto northbound New Hampshire Route 1A we would travel alongside the Atlantic Ocean until we met up with US 1 in Portsmouth. The first stop was Hampton Beach where we walked near the sandy beach and quickly looked in gift shops. Maine : Near the Pisquatica River at the Maine border we got on I-95 for a few miles. Now in Maine we soon got off the Interstate and in a few minutes were along the rocky Atlantic Coast of Maine. The driver continued to pass on his encyclopedia knowledge of the New England Coast. Our second stop was the Nuddle Lighthouse. The bus resumed along the Coast until it met up with US 1 near Ogunquit where recent suburban sprawl replaced forests. The tour guide would bring up all the Sprawl attributing it to the area becoming popular when George Bush started vacationing in Kennebunkport. Near the Rachel Carlson Wildlife Preserve, the charming side of Maine returned. In a few minutes was our third stop in Kennebunkport where we enjoyed a Maine Lobster Roll. After the third and final stop we headed back to the Atlantic Coast where we saw the vacation home of George Bush and the historic architecture of the estates in Kennebunkport. This was the northernmost point of the tour. The bus drove out of Kennebunkport in a Southwest direction on Maine Route 35. The last sight we saw was the Wedding House. As soon as we got on southbound Interstate 95 toward Boston, the tour officially was over. My final paragraph on the tour starts off by suggesting that you sit on the right side of the bus. The right side windows overlook the Atlantic Ocean, the Wedding House, and a nice view of the Charles River returning into Boston. In conclusion I highly recommend the Gray Line New England Sea Coast tour.

It is an island platform station, which means that the doors open on the left. There are audible and visual announcements of the next incoming train in either direction. There is no parking here. The station is completely handicapped accessible. There are turnstiles at street level and the usual automated ticket vending machines. The station is between North Station (inbound toward Forest Hills) and Sullivan Square (outbound towards Oak Grove).

After spending billions, they stuffed I-93 underground and the city is more beautiful for it. This girder remains as a reminder of what used to be here. In structural engineering, a "bent" refers to a transverse rigid frame - essentially a cross-sectional slice of a bridge or elevated roadway that includes columns and beams arranged to support vertical and lateral loads. The number "38" designates its position in the sequence of bents along the expressway. Each bent was numbered for construction and maintenance purposes, much like mile markers or grid references. The column has a marker posted on it for posterity. It reads, "The elevated John F. Fitzgerald Expressway was one of the Commonwealth's most ambitious and controversial urban redevelopment projects. Built by the Massachusetts Department of Public Works between 1951 and 1959, its downtown Boston route stretched from Dewey Square to North Station and allowed the growing crowds of suburban commuters to bypass the city's narrow streets. Twenty thousand citizens were displaced and hundreds of buildings were demolished to build the six-lane skyway. Nevertheless, planners hoped that it would alleviate congestion and simplify interurban travel. "Over the next 31 years, the Expressway's daily capacity grew from approximately 75,000 vehicles in 1969 to nearly 200,000 vehicles in 1990. Pollution and traffic jams became a regular part of the city's skyline, while the Waterfront and North End languished in the shadow, grease and grime of Boston's "other Green Monster". Between 1990 and 2007, the Central Artery / Tunnel Project redirected I-93 into a modern network of downtown tunnels. It also demolished the dilapidated Fitzgerald Expressway, restored the city's surface roads, and created the Rose Kennedy Greenway. "This structural column, known as "Bent 38", still rests on its original foundations and is the only piece of the elevated highway that was left undisturbed by construction. It remains as a memorial to the Expressway and to the impact that the health of our transportation systems have upon the life of the community. It also symbolizes the labor of scores of men and women who work to improve our infrastructure everyday." There are pictures of the old Expressway. It's worth checking out. Like the Citgo sign in Kenmore Square, the Prudential "Pru" Tower, the famous Green Monster in Fenway Park's outfield, the Custom House Tower on State Street, the Bunker Hill Monument and the Make Way for Ducklings Statues. The Rainbow Swash belongs in this group. Those big colorful gas tanks south of Boston are a massive public artwork painted on a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank in the Dorchester neighborhood. The design features sweeping rainbow-colored brushstrokes. It was created in 1971 by artist and former nun Corita Kent, commissioned by the Boston Gas Company. At 140 feet tall, it was once considered the largest copyrighted artwork in the world. You can spot the Rainbow Swash easily from Interstate 93 south of the city or from an aircraft window if you're fortunate to be landing from the south/southwest into Runway 4R. Though the original tank was demolished in 1992, the design was faithfully recreated on the adjacent tank, keeping the tradition alive. The tank sits on private property operated by National Grid, within a fenced-off industrial site near the Dorchester waterfront. There's no public access to the tank itself, and security is tight. It is, after all, full of liquified natural gas. Morrissey Boulevard offers a drive-by view, especially heading northbound. It's probably the most direct public-facing angle. It runs well, it is well maintained and has lots of history and charm. Not perfect, but very convenient and safe comparing to other cities in US! This is the perfect spot if you want to visit Newbury St. Once you come outside, you can start your stroll on the famous avenue from the best part! It's on the Green Line, we were coming from Kenmore Square. Next stop is Copley. Distances are short, you can walk them, but if you're in a rush, this stop is great! Perfect location!

I mean... it's a tunnel…read more It gets you from one side of Boston Harbor to the other, and most of the time it does exactly what it's supposed to do. When traffic is moving, it's a quick, direct route to Logan and probably the easiest way across. I'll give it that. The problem is that "when traffic is moving" does a lot of heavy lifting. One fender bender or one driver who suddenly realizes they're about to miss an exit, and everything seems to grind to a halt. Lane discipline also feels more like a suggestion than a rule. Watching people weave across the double solid lines or slam on the brakes at the last second is almost a daily occurrence. It makes an otherwise straightforward drive more stressful than it needs to be. The tunnel itself is fine, but it could definitely use a little more attention. The lighting and cleanliness aren't always what you'd expect for one of Boston's busiest roadways, and the walls can make the whole drive feel darker than it should. Would I use it again? Of course. It's a tunnel, not a vacation destination. It gets me where I'm going. I just don't look forward to the experience, especially during rush hour.
