I am a lifelong athlete and serious lifter and have gone through many different forms of pain relief extensively. Recently, I injured my back was struggling in my recovery. I was recommended to Dr. Schwerte by a friend and I got acupuncture done. He is a amazing at what he does in all ways. Everything is professional, he is always on time, he is very understanding of my situation. I am afraid of needles so acupuncture was a mental challenge for me but he was very caring and understanding with his approach. I will continue to get acupuncture going forward as part of my recovery. read more

I first visited Dr. Schwerte about 2 months ago at the recommendation of my chiropractor for treatment of a particularly stubborn bout of lower back pain. I've dealt with chronic back pain for the past ~20 years and this was my first experience with acupuncture. To be honest, I was skeptical...it's not that I didn't believe that acupuncture could help people, it's more that I didn't quite believe that acupuncture would help ME when nothing else I've tried has consistently helped. I was wrong. Within 4 treatments, I was virtually pain free. I still had/have problem areas that we're working on, but I went from skeptical to believing that a long-term pain-free existence could be in my future. My only regret is not finding Dr. Schwerte and trying acupuncture years ago. If you have chronic pain, I cannot recommend him highly enough! read more

I wish I had met Andreas years ago. I went to see him because I was experiencing daily headaches that weren't getting any better with regular exercise and good nutrition. The first time I saw him, like another person who posted their review, he did an analysis of my shoulders and their mobility. I couldn't BELIEVE the difference between my left and right shoulder. Working at a desk all day was creating tiny microfibers in my muscles to get so tight that nothing could relax them. Until Andreas stepped in! He started to introduce me to the science behind acupuncture. The more he explained WHY, the better I felt! Andreas has a very special gift. He listens well and treats all of my "complaints" as important information in finding the root of the problem versus masking the pain. He also works with my (6'2", 215 pound athletic) boyfriend. He's worked on his shoulder, elbow, back, groin, shoulders, etc....and he has seen equal relief throughout his body. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend him for any aches/pains you're experiencing. He also would help when I was super anxious and needed to calm my mind/heart. read more

Andreas' knowledge of both Western medicine and Eastern techniques is the absolute perfect combination to treat whatever "hurts." I've been seeing him for years and ALWAYS get great results. I am extremely comfortable recommending Andreas - he truly cares about his patients and their overall well being and always makes the time in his busy days to tune in to my particular health needs. How can you find a doctor better than that? I leave his office with an amazing sense of well being every time. I want everyone to experience that too. read more

Dr. Schwerte is exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable about his discipline - and I appreciate how he works in tandem with any western medicine assessments, diagnoses or treatments. I've seen him over the course of 10ish years for different reasons as they arise and the treatment has always had a positive impact. (Sleep, headaches, pinched nerve, stress, etc) I'm thrilled to write a review (which I rarely do) and have referred him to friends and colleagues. Great Financial Dist location too. Just stop thinking about it and go. read more

Dr. Andreas Schwerte is a wonder worker of an acupuncturist! He has western medicine knowledge with eastern medicine skills. So you get the best medical expertise from both worlds. He knows when he can help with acupuncture and when it is good to join the two schools of knowledge. And, his office is conveniently located in downtown San Francisco in the Financial District, or FiDi! I have been a patient of Dr. Schwerte for over 15 years. I started to see him to help with stress and anxiety issues, which then included weight loss, followed by back, etc.. You name the issue, Dr. Andreas Schwerte will find a way to make it better in a caring and non-aggressive manner. My well-being is better having Dr. Schwerte on my calendar! A few years ago, my back was a bit of a mess. I was on a three month wait list for an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon when I thought to myself maybe Dr. Schwerte could help; and help, he did. By the time the orthopedic surgeon visit came around, my back pain was already calming down with regular visits to Dr. Schwerte. So, rather than taking the advice of the surgeon to have the invasive surgery, I decided to continue with my visits with Dr. Schwerte and several years later my back is still doing great. Besides enjoying the most amazing and calming acupuncture visits, Andreas also takes a deeper dive into the medical issue at hand and provides guidance and advice to help you with your healing process. An example, is when I first visited Dr. Schwerte for stress, he noticed something that my primary care doctor had not and asked that I go back and ask for more blood work. When the blood work came back, Dr. Schwerte's observation and diagnosis was right on point. I have continued my visits with Andreas to help tight and stressed muscles, which are mainly due to working a desk job for too many years, and just overall well-being, and I am so much better because of the visits. Whatever ails you at the moment, do not hesitate to set up an appointment with Dr. Schwerte, you will be glad you did and you will be taking the next step towards feeling better. read more

I have known Andreas since he was in school in the East Bay, and started seeing him more than twenty years ago. He has helped me quickly solve several issues over the years including an acute lower back injury, knee problems, stress-induced anxiety, sports injuries to my wrist and neck, and tendinitis in both elbows. Always professional, kind, and laser perceptive, Andreas takes a whole-body approach to treatment and recovery, giving his patients every edge during the healing process and in preventing future injury. I am a firm believer in the effectivity of acupuncture, especially when performed by someone as skilled as Andreas Schwerte. I highly recommend him to anyone who is seeking relief and healing from a recent, acute injury or who has given up and thinks they have to live with chronic pain forever. read more

I've been meaning to write this review for months. Words cannot convey my gratitude and appreciation for Andreas's services so it's difficult to do him justice in a couple paragraphs. For anyone considering acupuncture I cannot speak more highly of the outcomes I've had from seeing him over the last year. I first visited Andreas in June of 2012 for chronic pain in my wrist that was a result of an injury I'd sustained the year prior. I found him on Yelp and given his stellar reviews and other success stories with chronic pain, decided to give him a try. I will admit I was weary of the idea of acupuncture: One, because I am not a fan of needles; Two, because I am not completely convinced by a lot of the eastern medicine hype; Three because I was definitely one of those narrow minded people that assumed acupuncturists were hippies, burned incense and got all cosmic on you. Well I was wrong about all of it. Within a few minutes of my first visit when I explained that I'd broken my wrist the summer before and was in constant pain, he immediately asked about my shoulder. Had I been in a sling (answer - yes)? He then proceeded to examine the mobility of my shoulder in comparison to the other one and immediately diagnosed the source of my pain was coming from a shoulder that was never rehabbed properly after my injury. He knew about all the ligaments, muscles, joints, etc in the area - his knowledge of anatomy was profound. I spent the next 4 months getting treated based on this diagnosis, which has resulted in an outcome of my previous chronic pain being almost negligible. Right around the time my visits for my wrist started to taper off in frequency, I decided to ask Andreas about his fertility treatments since I'd read on his website that he specialized in that. My husband and I had been trying for months without success and I was mostly curious what acupuncture for fertility actually meant. Once again, he asked me very specific questions to get to the root of the issue and diagnosed me with a luteal phase defect (which I had never heard of before). He immediately started me on a regimented treatment of acupuncture and herbs and within a month my cycle had already began to shift in the right direction. Within 7 months of consistent treatment I was pregnant (I'm due in January)! Lastly, my husband has had severe allergies for years and since going to Andreas for acupuncture and herbal treatments, he no longer has to take his prescription medication. Andreas is a professional, a healer and a wonderful person. His treatments far exceeded my expectations and I am so grateful to have found him. read more

When you find a doctor that is not only professional and knowledgeable, but also passionate about their practice, you have struck gold my friends! I have just begun treatment with Dr. Schwerte for anxiety, as well as neck and back pain. After the first treatment alone, I felt better. After my first visit, I was given homework to do in order to better understand my condition, and herbal and mineral supplements as well. This is a truly holistic approach to medicine that I definitely appreciate. I would highly recommend Dr. Schwerte to anyone considering acupuncture. read more

Andreas's deep knowledge of Eastern medicine, as well as his kind, thoughtful listening, and inquisitive nature over the last six years has helped significantly improve my general well-being. He has come to my aide several times: balancing my hormones, a knee injury, bronchitis, hair loss, and the general ebbs and flow of a highly stressed work life. He asks the important (and sometimes) hard questions and always focuses on pinpointing the real issue; helping to speed my recovery. I truly don't know what I would do without his expertise over the years. read more

I wish I had gone to see Andreas sooner. After years of having various issues, many of my symptoms either disappeared or were significantly reduced once having visits with him. Andreas not only combines Western and Eastern medicines, but spends quality time with you to fully understand what is happening in your body. He is a great listener and truly cares. I always felt like I was in amazing hands with him. I can't count the times Andreas whipped up some herbs when I was fight off a cold or sinus issue and how his remedies helped to move through those illnesses much more quickly. After close to 10 years of seeing him, my living and work situation aren't currently conducive to getting into SF for appointments like that, but if my circumstances were to ever change, then I'd go back to see Andreas again in a heartbeat! read more

I started going to Andreas a few years ago for a shoulder injury. I now see him weekly for issues ranging from muscular skeletal injuries and strains to digestive problems and stress. Accupuncture is 100% a legitimate treatment for many problems but it is imperative you find an expert. Andreas is an absolute expert. Highly skilled- I often leave his office amazed with the improvement in my symptoms. If I could give him 10/5 stars I would. He is that good. And I have had my fair share of injuries and treatments. So trust me. Also, he's a great guy and is thoughtful both in his practice and his approach to life. Last thing I'll add- he makes payment/insurance the easiest thing in the world. It's actually quite amazing. read more

I guess I'm something of a convert now. I'm very skeptical when it comes to anything outside of "hard science," and that normally applies to the medical world. But after seven years of recurring gastrointestinal issues, with my GI specialist applying only steroids to temporarily relieve the problem (and not offering any actual advice for ending them permanently), I was forced to try Dr. Schwerte's dual-medical approach (Western/Chinese) when a major flareup seriously threatened my health. Turns out I'm gluten intolerant (not the doctor's diagnosis, but a lab result). That would have been nice to know years ago! Dr. Schwerte put me on a regimen of acupuncture, herbal treatments and a mild diet. Over the course of about a month and a half I went from being pale and nutrient-starved to feeling completely normal, and on my way to lifelong prevention of further GI incidents. While I'm disappointed to have lost beer and bread from my diet, I'm glad to finally have some answers and know how to stay healthy from here on out. read more

"Whoa. Marcel, you kind of look like sh*t - again. Still not sleeping?" So went the conversation for months, with one of my closest friends. I've always been a poor sleeper. Taking hours to fall asleep, only to wake up in 20 minute intervals, when I finally did. Finally I relented and gave Dr. Schwerte a call. It's the best thing I ever did. Andreas diagnosed my issues and began treatment right away. Sleeping issues - fixed. I can't believe I lived with it for 5 years!!! I look forward to my weekly visits with Andreas, to hear his calming, "Now you relax for a little bit." For first timers - don't be put off by the "spit" test. read more

I went to see Dr. Schwerte in a last ditch effort to see if he could do something about the chronic pain in my right shoulder. This issue had progressively gotten worse over the course of a two year period and was having a seriously negative impact on my yoga practice and my quality of life. Dr. Schwerte was confident that he could alleviate the issue. I was skeptical but at this point willing to try anything. After several accupuncture (trigger point therapy) treatments the pain was about 90% better. He also gave me some strengthening exercises to do at home along with a theraputic rubber band (big strong one) and I am very happy to report that the pain is 100% gone. I couldn't be more amazed and pleased with the results. His fees are reasonable and his results are nothing short of fantastic. read more

This review is long overdue! I have been seeing Andreas now for a few years and cannot speak highly enough of him. I generally see him for assistance during fertility treatments - I truly don't believe I would have been lucky enough to have had a successful IVF cycle and pregnancy if it wasn't for him! I have also experienced how wonderful and knowledgeable he is about other issues I've brought up during our weekly appointments (shoulder pain, anxiety, tooth pain, sinus pressure, amongst many other things). Andreas is a wealth of knowledge, patient, empathetic, and incredibly kind. He goes above and beyond for his patients, and it's truly appreciated! I would recommend Andreas to anyone! read more

Dr. Schwerte's diligent treatments have saved me from two serious surgeries in the past 10+ years, latest being an unavoidable back surgery according to two UCSF professors and one of the top Neurosurgeons! (80% of my spine was blocked due to a herniation at S6/L1 and I was almost 100% immobilized, so visiting his office was an extremely painful experience ) The other one was about ten years when I developed a major hip trauma due to extreme sports.... Again, a few expert doctors found the only solution to be an intrusive hip surgery after having exhausted all sorts of therapies. The one therapy I did not give up and insisted on going back was Dr. Schwerte's, and it did pay off!!... So, better later than never, I am trying to give him the best review that I can so that he can help someone else like you to heal. I have also worked with other acupuncturists, and Dr. Schwerte's very direct and intense approach is par to none. Besides the two major injuries which required multiples visits per week for extended periods at a time, I really appreciate the occasional visits now, where a tweaked muscle, a stiff shoulder or a back spasm is resolved in one session. I am very grateful and can't recommend him enough! read more

Just more than one year ago, I was referred to Dr. Andreas Schwerte by two independent parties: my great chiropractor, Dr. Dan Shapero, and also a woman with whom I had studied pilates and yoga at my health club (Laura Putnam). I have ongoing issues with my sciatic nerve due to an ankle sprain and issues of pain on the left side of my body. Being in the perimenopausal phase of my life, I was also told that Andreas could assist me with that particular transition. I have been seeing Andreas regularly (mostly every week) for nearly the past 1.5 years and here's what I absolutely love about him and his work. I can dash into his office in the middle of my hurried work day, briefly tell him what's going on with me and INSTANTLY he will know how to treat me, even if I cannot identify all my symptoms or issues. He is so well versed in the field of medicine (both oriental and western) and accupuncture that he intuitively and instinctively knows exactly what to do...and he's always right. Had I more time I would delve into the study of accupunture myself because Andreas has so peaked my curiosity about his work and its amazing benefits. Andreas and his accupuncture work has really helped me a lot. Andreas truly cares about his patients and their overall well being and always makes the time in his busy days to tune into my particular health needs. Plus he's got a great sense of humor and is always up on the latest medical whatevers. How can you get a better doctor than that? Andreas will ease any fears you have about putting tiny needles in your body and his knowledge and reassuring presence will make you feel like you're the most important patient in his practice. His office is very restful and soothing with soft music and lavendar to calm any soul and spirit. Once/week I have 45 minutes of totally uninterrupted "Maryann time" and emerge from my sessions with Andreas feeling completely refreshed, restored and renewed. It's an amazing sense of well being everyone should have the opportunity to experience. Maryann Hrichak read more

You know the kind of doctor who has his hand on the doorknob while you are talking? THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM! Someone who sits down and looks you in the eye while you spill your guts about very personal stuff? THIS IS THE MAN! It's immediately obvious that he is THERE for and with you. I went to see him on the recommendation of my chiropractor, who had helped me as much as he could, My regular doctor was hopeless. Andreas is an amazing acupuncturist and herbalist! I was having issues with strange sensations in my limbs that my doctor, neurologist and others couldn't fix. Andreas conducted a completely thorough evaluation of everything I do and consume and set me up with a treatment plan and herbs. Within weeks the sensations were gone! That was several years ago and I now see Andreas for regular maintenance. He has also helped me with back issues (I had a bulging disc a few years ago) and other injuries. My general health has improved under his watch as well - I feel stronger, rarely get sick and have a great energy level, and I know it's due to the the treatments and herbs Andreas gives me. On a personal note, Andreas always has great book and podcast recommendations - he is very insightful and I thoroughly enjoy my visits with him! I would give him more stars if I could. read more

You couldn't ask for better care, better service, or such a dedication to your long-term health. Andreas Schwerte's clinic offers many options for healing including acupuncture, herbal treatments, food intolerance testing, and much more. I used to suffer from carpal tunnel and tendonitis for 7 years and I had consulted countless medical doctors, physical therapists, and chiropractors with very limited success. At the time I was introduced to Dr. Schwerte through a friend. I was not familiar with oriental medicine before, but after this experience I would highly recommend it to anyone. Andreas Schwerte was able to relief my pain and symptoms within a few weeks. Amazing results - and no surgery or pain medication necessary! The symptoms are gone for good (anyone suffering from tendonitis can appreciate this comment). More recently I injured my lower back (sport-related accident) and a few acupuncture sessions later the muscle spasms were completely gone. I did not have to take any of the medication my orthopedist had prescribed. Of note, the only reason I consulted the orthopedist was to take X-rays to make sure there was no damage to the spine. Dr. Schwerte's practice is conveniently located in the Financial District. Very friendly staff. Made a big difference in my life. read more

Andeas is one person who will make you realize that acupuncture does work. He doesn't make outrageous promises, or say he's a magic cure-all, which I had previously associated with acupuncture. Nothing like that. He just patiently explains how the body works, and why certain things are helpful, and they are. I was skeptical at first, but since then he has helped a torn muscle in my calf, a pulled hamstring (I play soccer) and my migraines. I talked about it so much that a friend of mine who has had chronic arthritis in his wrist went to him, and cannot stop raving. He was so glad not to have to take steroids, which was western medicine's only answer. Amazing experience and outcome with Andreas, bottom line. After getting a bulging disk in my neck coupled with pinched nerves and being in constant pain for 3 weeks, I was referred to Andreas by a friend. I had not tried acupuncture before but the pain was constant and relentless so I was willing to do anything to get some relief. I couldn't go to work and was couch-bound. After the very first time I went to Andreas I had a reduction in pain by roughly 20%. After that, I was off of the pain pills within a week. I had about 10 more appointments over a 3 week period and the problem was pretty much cured. I cannot say enough about how much he helped me out. Go see him, you won't regret it. He rocks and is a true professional who knows exactly what he is doing. Life changing experience....when you have cronic pain things can get pretty dark and he cured me. read more

I have been suffering from a severe Herniated disk for many years now. I am 26 years old, working as a waitress and having a bad back is not much fun. Several times in the past the pain was so bad that I could not get out of bed. So, in an effort to avoid surgery, I began looking for an acupuncturist. From the many that I found I chose to go to Dr. Schwerte. I went 3 times and I felt like I never had a herniated disk. I couldn't really believe I was pain free so fast and I was so relieved and over joyed. Now I will go every 3 or 4 weeks which I think is good for me. It is necessary to go back and have another treatment every so often but opposed to the alternative this is a piece of cake. I've been seeing Dr. Schwerte since waaay before he opened his practice downtown. Even before his practice on Castro street! With a background in Western and Chinese medicine, he knows both back-to-front and managed to fuse them, unlike most others in the field who merely scrape the surface and boast they did. In fact, he's the kind of doctor that will keep studying and learning to find the most efficient and accurate techniques possible. His hands are golden and has incredible knowledge of how to resolve good old PAIN! This man is completely dedicated to making people feel better... Imagine that, in this day and age of doctors wanting you to return as much as possible, as they ring up the tab and as you beg them to medicate you, here comes Dr. Schwerte to save the day with an S on his chest! S stands for superior, sensitive, sincere, solid, skilled and sensible. His technique is on-point, attitude positive, environment welcoming, he really finds joy in his work and cares about his patients, and above all he'll CURE you. When you find someone as direct, informative, and as friendly as Dr. Schwerte, go ahead and see if you can find this in any other doctor. This is hard to encounter.
