In my role, I work with children of varying abilities, including those with developmental differences. Unfortunately, I have had multiple unpleasant interactions with staff that have made the environment feel unwelcoming and, at times, inappropriate for the families I serve. I have observed what I perceive to be differential treatment toward families of color, including nonverbal cues and behaviors that come across as dismissive and judgmental. One particularly concerning incident involved a child with autism who was experiencing a brief meltdown in a private room. During this time, a staff member, later identified as Sue Eckhardt, entered abruptly and stated, "What the hell is going on? I can hear the banging in my office." The tone and approach lacked sensitivity and were not appropriate given the situation. The interaction escalated an already challenging moment rather than supporting a safe and understanding environment. Additionally, I have received repeated feedback that typical toddler behavior--such as speaking at an indoor voice level--is "too loud." I have also been told that my therapeutic singing is disruptive, despite it being a standard and necessary component of my sessions. At the same time, there appears to be inconsistency in expectations for noise levels among staff. I would also like to note concerns regarding the physical layout of the children's area. The toddler space is centrally located with high ceilings, which naturally amplifies sound. This design contributes to noise concerns that staff have raised, yet the responsibility appears to be placed on families rather than considering environmental factors. Public libraries are intended to be inclusive, welcoming spaces for all members of the community. Based on my experiences, I feel that the current environment and some staff interactions fall short of that standard. I strongly encourage leadership to reflect on staff training, particularly in areas of cultural responsiveness, disability awareness, and family-centered practices.

Very rude and disrespectful library director. Don't go to south holland library if you are African…read moreAmerican, they will stereotype you immediately and treat you like a delinquent. This woman had the nerve to approach my kids at the library and ask them if they were sitting in the back isle by the books because they're looking to get into mischief/trouble and don't want anyone to see what they were doing. Mind you, they were sitting quietly doing their homework on the floor. Why would she make such a remark? I'm sure if their skin color matched hers, her approach would have been different. My daughter called me because she felt uncomfortable. I drove down there to find out what was going on, she had left already. I left my number for her to call me, it's been 3 days and I'm yet to receive a call. I also understand that when I left the library, another white woman came over to them and was equally rude to them. These people need an attitude adjustment. Bottom line is my kids will NEVER go back there and at this point I don't even want to hear from you Ms Director.

The librarian made my 4 yr old son cry because he wanted 2 coloring sheets. She crept up behind me and said "That's it she just printed those!" Yea for MY CHILDREN DUH! PRINT SOME MORE IS WHAT I WANTED TO SAY... I AM SO MAD I WISH I WOULD OF TOOK A PICTURE OF THE SIGN DISPLAYED ON ALL OF THE COMPUTER SCREENS DENYING THESE KIDS COMPUTER SERVICES FOR NO REASON BESIDES TELLING THEM TO READ A BOOK. my children read books and read books all day and were rewarded computer services.. To be denied and told to read a book as if to say the never read books. Maybe we were doing a family summer project? Or going on my capstone library. I want to complain but don't know to who so I'll just yelp.
