It was a thrill to meet owner Adam Teller after reading so much about him online, especially "He…read moreKnows What He's Talking About" in Arizona Highways October 2017 and "The Place Where Two Fell Off" in Outside magazine 10/2/2006. His family's been here for generations and Adam's been a certified guide since he was 13. It shows: After learning that we wanted to spend the day hiking Canyon de Chelly while hearing Diné stories, he considered our ages (early 60's) and capabilities (pretty strong hikers) and paired us with his son Bryan (36) for a hike down the grippy sandstone Bear Trail, a leisurely stroll along the Canyon Del Muerto side of the Monument, then back out again. Perfect! Bryan shared a ton of fascinating history and stories during our nearly 8-mile hike (784' of vertical). Generations of Bryan's family have lived in the canyon, including, until recently, his grandpa Ben, and their ancestor Barboncito, the Head Chief of the Navajo when the Bosque Redondo Treaty of 1868 was signed. The treaty ended The Long Walk, enabling the tribe to return to Canyon de Chelly, and established the reservation that would become the Navajo Nation. We met his cousins, uncle, and his auntie made us Navajo fry bread for lunch in the shade of tall cottonwood trees at the bottom of the canyon, just before the turnaround point at Fortress Rock. Riveting oral history, hiking, kindness, hospitality, and an amazing day I'll remember for the rest of my life - totally recommend!!

Adam Teller is a very angry man! To give a one star rating…read moredescribing this tour as not good is quite an understatement. It was a terrible tour, and left a unforgettably bad impression on myself, my wife and our two friends alike. To start off the tour we went to the Navajo Recreation Department to pay our $8.00 each fee to enter the canyon. There in the parking lot he began a gripe session describing how the Navajo people have been plundered and marauded by the white people and his court appearances to fight against all the injustice done to Navajo Nation and his land. That lasted about 20 minutes. It got worse from there. Describing himself as a rebel with Christian parents he displayed a total disgust of anything and anybody Christian. He recalled to us how as a child he was abused by a Catholic priest. This memory left Adam with a lasting and resentful resentment towards all Christians. We agreed with him that that was a terrible thing to have endured but he brushed off our affirming comments as not sincere even though we were. He claimed we thought he was the cause which was a ridiculous comment. He pushed on us his beliefs of reincarnation and the gods of his ancestry. We appreciated learning Navajo history but Adam pushed his beliefs on us telling us he "was wasting his time telling us any more". He had earlier described how he is working to be a Navajo medicine man. On ancient tombs he told how in 2017 he and his uncle inscribed fake petroglyphs on the canyon walls. This action caused us to have doubts on anything he showed us afterwards. He claimed his uncles try to steal his clients luring them onto their own tours. He spoke harshly of the white man in general, the US government, his Navajo family, the Hubbell Trading Post, and the National Park Service. Some of his complaints might be legitimate but when I said I was a Christian and don't believe in his religious beliefs he called the lot of us "Christian assholes". He alluded to leaving us in the canyon even though we were miles in as he claimed he previously did to some former Christian person in the past. He claimed we were the ones "full of anger" and that we "disrespected his temple", the canyon itself. After his insulting loud tirade he said he was not "taking us to his house". We presume that meant the canyon, and he turned around and hastily returned us to our pickup spot ending our tour over an hour early. We were all stunned and silent. No one said a word on the return. We all felt very uncomfortable. He had been so belligerent we even feared for our safety. The only good thing at the end was that after we all got out of his vehicle he pulled away without any payment, even though we felt obligated to at least prorate a portion of the quoted price. Now, after the fact, recollecting on his demeanor, he didn't deserve any payment. Do yourself a favor and find any tour other than Adam Tellers Antelope House Tour company. This review is meant to warn and prevent someone else having the same terrible experience we had.

Our guide, Shawn Holiday, was simply the best of the best. His knowledge of history and geology brought the land to life in a way I'll never forget. He didn't just guide us--he immersed us in the experience. From sharing stories and cultural insights to playing the flute in the canyon, every moment felt meaningful and authentic. Shawn also had an incredible eye for photography. He took us to breathtaking locations and helped capture some of the most unforgettable photos our family will ever have. Traveling with my wife and two daughters, I couldn't have asked for a better guide--he was thoughtful, polite, and deeply respectful as he shared Navajo customs and traditions with us. The beauty of this place is beyond words--you truly have to see it to believe it. Being there also gave me a deeper appreciation for the rich history of the Indigenous people who lived in harmony with this land, trading far and wide and honoring nature as one. That spirit is still present, and it's something that deserves respect and recognition. I feel incredibly lucky to have experienced this tour with Shawn. It's something I will carry with me forever. I hope to see continued opportunities and prosperity for the Navajo people in the future--they are the true stewards of this land, and their culture is something the world can learn so much from. If you're considering this tour--don't hesitate. It's unforgettable.

This should be a 5-star review. But it's not, because of a critical inaccuracy when booking the…read more3-hour Monument Valley tour. I'll discuss that first because until the company fixes this issue, it will lead to the same problem for other as we experienced. Here's the problem: when you book the tour, it tells you to meet the tour guide in the lobby of The View Hotel. On the website before booking, it says "Please meet your guide in the lobby of the View Hotel next to the bronze statue of a cowboy riding a horse." In the email confirmation, it says "Your tour guide will pick you up at the beautiful View Hotel lobby!" Pretty clear, right? We're supposed to meet the tour guide in the lobby. No ambiguity here. We arrived in the lobby a full 15 minutes ahead of our 9:00am pickup - we were warned that the tour would leave precisely on time. 9:00 came and went with no sign of the tour guide or his vehicle. I call the office and get voicemail, but don't leave a message. A minute later I get a text message from their bot inviting me to start a conversation. I explain the problem, and get another automatically-generated response: "Thanks for letting me know! I'll check with our team and get back to you shortly." Over the next 10 minutes I send a couple more clarification messages, and receive no response at all. So we're starting to fret. We have a flight to catch later in the day, so if we miss this tour we won't have an opportunity to rebook. Then after a few minutes, a tour guide from a _different_ company comes in, sees us, and says that the meeting point for tours is outside. We walk out of the hotel lobby, and don't see anything at all, because the tour pickup point is across the parking lot and down a hill, completely out of view from the hotel entrance. We walk down, arriving 10 minutes after the "prompt" departure time, and join our tour. We could have completely missed our tour because of the company's inability to maintain an accurate website. But we lucked out today. The company never called or texted back to provide us with updated instructions about where to meet, and the tour guide didn't attempt to find us either. We are grateful to the guide from the different company who made sure we got on the tour. So, this could easily be a 2-star or worse review for this experience. But the fact of the matter is that the tour was really great once we got started. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and entertaining. He gave us recommendations about where to take pictures and took a couple creative ones for us. He shared Navajo history, mythology, and his own personal experiences growing up in the Navajo nation. We saw some beautiful scenery which left us wanting more.

For you Arizonans and visitors alike who may not know, Monument Valley is temporarily closed due to…read moreCOVID-19. Therefore, it is not possible to tour the sacred site itself. Last June, this information was not as known as it is now, and given our long-standing plans to see Monument Valley, my fiancé booked a horseback tour hosted by Roy Black's Awesome Horse Tours. What has since ensued has been a fascinating exhibition of dishonesty that would be laughable if it wasn't such a waste of time. Read on: | 7/4/20 tour booked on 6/26/20 | It should have piqued our suspicions that Roy Black's website does not provide any means to cancel tours. It does, however, provide ample contact information -- phone numbers and email addresses -- which we deemed sufficient if a cancellation was necessary. On 6/26/20, two one-hour tours were booked for $155.40. | 7/4/20 tour cancelled on 6/27/20 | With more evidence supporting Monument Valley's apparent closure, we decided on 6/27/20 to cancel the tour that was booked on 6/26/20. My fiancé called Mr. Black and left a voicemail. She also left two emails on 6/27, explicitly declaring our intent to cancel the tour, but she did not receive replies for either. How curious. The next action was to contact the bank on the same day; a dispute was filed, and a temporary credit was issued. | 9/1/20: Surely you're joking, Mr. Black! | Per the bank, the temporary credit was reversed! While Mr. Black is a difficult gentleman to reach, the bank had no problem getting in touch with him. He explained that the $155.40 paid on 6/26/20 was nonrefundable given his 72-hour cancellation policy. I'll give you, dear reader, a moment to reflect upon this fatuous remark. For whomever would inconceivably need this to be explained, Mr. Black's claim would only be true if we cancelled on 7/1/20, 72 hours in advance of the 7/4/20 tour we booked. However, we did not do that because -- brace yourselves -- we read the cancellation policy. We cancelled a week in advance of the tour, honoring the policy and cordially informing a strangely-unavailable Mr. Black. | Verdict | So, what happens now? The photos attached to this review will be sent to the bank, another investigation will be launched, and, of course, we will be refunded. Mr. Black's dishonest report to the bank has only served to delay the correct outcome. "Awesome Horse Tours", indeed. Would you like to know what's even more awesome? Honest business, a forthright website (e.g. "Monument Valley is closed, but we'll be glad to book tours when it reopens!"), and the literacy of one's own cancellation policy. As Roy Black has failed to deliver on all of these, I unequivocally do not recommend Roy Black's Guided Tours. Monument Valley will reopen, my friends, hopefully sooner rather than later. When they do, I trust you will join me in booking a tour with an actually legitimate service. Until then, godspeed.
