BOTTOM LINE: Worth the trek for both the hike and "teachings"…read more What can I add that hasn't already been said? It's been a few years since Yelpers have reviewed this provincial park, but I can say, it seems like it's as good as its ever been. Of note, after you turn into the "entrance" of the park, it's still a good 2-3 km drive on narrow dirt/gravel roads before you enter the actual parking area. The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable of the petroglyphs and were very patient/enthused about answering questions about their history and interpretations. The petroglyphs themselves are housed in a nearly 40-year old structure that protects it from degradation from the elements (because acid rain and limestone don't mix) and humans (because in the 70s, people use to picnic and party on them). There are 3 trails in the area, and I'd recommend some good hiking shoes because there are good sections of elevation and rocks. The Nanabush Trail seems to be the "Goldilocks" of the them - not too long, not too short, but just right.

But if you are looking to just have fun, maybe not. Many of the kids complained about the owners daughter as she was not kind. Oh and make sure you don't forget food or you will be out of luck.

We also booked our group of young children (ages 5 and 8) for (staff led) pony rides which they loved (rides for both the adults and children went through some beautiful fields and forests on the ranch/farm property). It was such a great experience I even signed up the kids for a Farm Scout day camp a few days later, given they luckily had some openings. Highly recommend! Especially if you are in the Peterborough or Belleville areas (about a 45 min drive from each)

There is also a small store in case you've forgotten essentials, or just want an ice cream! Check in was easy, the routes to the sites are marked clearly and plenty of space between sites. Washrooms are decently cleaned and throughout the park. Plenty of activities to do - rent kayaks/canoes (including life jackets) and enjoy a fun day on the water while trying to catch the pictographs! Lots of trails to take in the views, some beach areas for the kids to splash and play as well. The park rangers do a good job of patrolling to make sure no issues.

Would love to rate this but unfortunately my family missed our boat tour time which was almost the…read moreentire reason for our trip. We did not realize we had to drive through the park to a parking lot and then find our way to the company/gift shop beside the visitor centre. By time we found where to go, we were about 15-20 minutes past our time. Colour me shocked when they would not even entertain the idea of letting us go on another boat if there were empty seats available. 10 minutes in advance of this is not enough time. It should be clear for those who have never visited Bon Echo that you should plan a half hour in advance by time you pay your park entrance fee, park and give yourself enough time to hike the many trails around the park if you get turned around and go to the wrong place (we went to the canoe rentals first by accident, then the visitor centre, and then the boat company's gift shop who own the tour). I am disgusted that they would not even try to work with us. We weren't asking to displace anyone else or block other last minute people from purchasing tickets. It was just to fill seats that were going to be empty. Their response was, "sure, you can go later this afternoon but you have to pay again". So ultimately we drove 5 hours from Hamilton to give you $160 for nothing. I should make this extremely clear that this is in no way Bon Echo's fault, it is the private tour company operator.
