Anata is a strange/non-poetic name for a sushi bar. Wonder if they're going with a simple "you" or something else. I'm no expert though. However, prices seem to be reasonable or cheap for the area. Their lunch specials were particularly enticing too. Portions were far bigger than we anticipated. Though, honestly, wish I had just gotten sushi. I picked a salmon bento lunch special and we also got a tori bento. Salmon bento came with a seared filet of salmon with a sauce, two salmon sashimi, tempura + sauce, four gyoza, rice, and miso. Overall, fairly decent and in a bigger portion. Tempura was really nice and the sashimi seemed fairly fresh. Something I later wished I'd just ordered alone. The salmon filet with sauce was so-so and looked good, but wasn't particularly tasty to me. Fried gyoza would have been nicer with a sauce. I'm unsure if the sauce provided was for both of the tempura and the gyoza though. Tori bento had a nice bit of terriyaki chicken, fried egg over rice, more tempura with a different sauce, miso, and kimchi. The kimchi felt a little out of left field for me, but wouldn't complain about getting kimchi. If it wasn't for the lunch prices I don't believe I'd actually have ever came here and would have found it a big rip off. The restaurant is nice for some okay Japanese style food, but nothing I'd desire to pay more than what I had. Service was nice/standard amount of reservation. Maki and sushi looked really good though. If the sashimi was any indicator of its worth then that would have been my first choice had I known. We were craving for Japanese food (especially ramen), and were glad to chance upon this restaurant. However, upon entering, we were a bit skeptical as we realized the restaurant was run by Chinese. And as expected, the ramen as well as the yaki soba tasted like Chinese food rather than Japanese. The ramen soup was bland and there was not much flavour, same for the yaki soba. The only saving grace is the sashimi we had, which was rather fresh. Overall, we were really disappointed with our 40euros spent on Chinese rather than Japanese food. read more

Every time I come to the city center of Brussels, this is my most favorite spot to have sashimi and sushi. I usually order their lunch menus which are a really good bargain. Their fish is fresh and tender. I hardly had any disappointments. There was only one time that I was expecting a well grilled tuna, but it was raw on the inside (and I couldn't get rid of the bone that was sticking in the raw meat). Their salmon is really good and fresh and has a 100% success rate in my case. I can also recommend their Pork Cutlet Ramen if you are in for something else than sushi and sashimi. The place itself is nice and cosy. Sometimes it might be hard to get a spot, because it is really crowded at certain times. I do recognize some of remarks about the service (otherwise I really would have given 5 stars). Sometimes it does seem as if the waitresses are uninterested. However, in my experience, they always served fast, and that I can appreciate. Excellent value for money. read more

Bad service, there really is no appreciation shown by the waiter. The food is decent; the katsudon is really tasty and the Combox C with the teriyaki beef is delicious! The dishes are served quickly and warm, and it's overall not too expensive. read more

I love this place. Although there are a handful of Asian restaurants in the area, I always find myself coming back to Anata. I mainly stick to the sushi, the "D" bento box. That comes with 6 sushi and 6 maki. Add a beer and that's a great meal for under 20 euro! I highly recommend this place and until somebody convinces me that there is better sushi some place else, this is where I'll stay! read more

The most off putting thing about this Japanese restaurant is that it is so filthy dirty. If the interior is dirty than imagine the food? The sushi serve warm. Horrible. Japanese food cooked by Chinese people, but very tasty and cheap. Nothing fancy about this place, with lots of tv, Chinese and Korean music in the background. They do lunch offers, cook throughout the day and are efficient. They don't take Bancontact, but only visa or cash. read more

My work colleagues talked about this restaurant a lot so I was expecting something great. I was really disappointed when I finally got there to have diner. The place was really crowded, the smell was not ok (I hate going out of a restaurant smelling like food and here it was the case) and the service was not that good either. The waitress seamed in a hurry, like she wanted to get read of us as soon as possible. We ordered sushi but it was average sushi. Food is good, but the place is small and crowded, and the service is very bad. I ordered a salmon and rice and my date ordered sushi. I got served pretty quickly and started eating after 5 minutes because my date hadn't received her food yet so I thought I'd wait for her. Though By the time I got done eating, she still hadn't gotten her sushi. Also when we asked for silverwares, the waiter came back with only forks. Other than that, hygiene looks decent and the toilets are clean. Will probably order next time we feel like eating Anata's. read more

I'm a Belgian local and I used to come a lot at this restaurant. Because the prices are okay and the food was and still is mostly okay. It's not a true Japanese place of course. But it's still not overpriced and the portions are well ... "impressive" (in size). However there are now two issues these day they seem to be ignoring: 1) The smell ... the smell is sometimes just bad. And it's even worse if you go anywhere in the basement where the Toilets are. Of course it's not there "all the time" and sometimes the frying smell will cover the bad smell. But inevitably ... you'll notice it ... and it's definitely not the smell of the fresh fish. 2) The hygiene is a problem in there these days ... It seems they don't like cleaning the tables. Or anything else for that matter. Yes ... the tabletops are dirty. They stick. And it's been like for the past 3 times I went there. I'll go back there one of these days. And I'll remove this review if they fix those issues. If they don't ... I'll just leave it here for the time being. EDIT: It has improved these last months. I'm upgrading to two stars :p We'll see. read more

I've ordered sushi from here before and it was good. This is the first time I've come into the actual restaurant and it was pretty bad. Only one over-worked waitress for the restaurant and it was obvious she was pissed. I ordered a bento box with salmon and beef, I asked if it was possible to replace the beef with tofu or veggies because I wanted salmon but do not eat beef. The waitress told me that it is salmon OR beef not salmon AND beef, so okay no problem. Except when she brings out the box with salmon AND beef. The box also comes with tempura vegetables, I've never had fridge-cold fried vegetables before... Gross. The box also comes with rice and egg. The rice was warm but the egg on top was once again cold like it came out of the fridge. The box also comes with miso soup, my particular bowl didn't have any tofu in it. All in all I would recommend this place for sushi but probably not for food that is supposed to be hot, or for service. read more

I set the standards a bit lower for this one because, being from Hawaii, I eat sushi and Japanese food on a regular basis. What I was really craving was some rice, and Anata was minutes away from my apartment. I ordered the Tamago maki (which was good), the salmon mayonnaise (also good), and some sort of special roll with shrimp tempura, imitation crab, avocado, mushroom, and takuan inside (I didn't care much for it). There were two things I didn't like: 1) a bowl of miso soup was nearly 3 euro, and 2) the service was nearly nonexistent. Other than that, I got 14 pieces of sushi for 18 euro, and my cravings were somewhat satisfied. Not sure if I'll be back or not. read more

The food is good and cheap. The restaurant is situated next to the Bourse so it's quickly crowded even during the week. The service is really quick but not very friendly. Anata is a restaurant I have been going to for a few years now. I was one of the first customers, and I have been going all these years with friends and my kids. Yes, I live in Brussels. Anyway, I have always liked the restaurant, because the food is good, the price is fair, and the service is sufficiently good. Being someone who grew up in Asia, I have fairly high standards for Asian food. Anata meets my standards for authenticity and tastiness. Even though this is a Japanese restaurant, they have also introduced some nice Chinese and Korean dishes. They are especially generous with the quantity of the food they give. Although the decor and ambience isn't the best of the best, what matters for me is the quality and quantity of the food, the price, and the service. Anyway, they are in a very central location in the downtown area, so its convenient to get to. They are also open earlier and longer than most restaurants I know, so it is an ideal place to go to anytime of the day and any day of the week. I recommend Anata to both tourists and longtime residents of Brussels. It is a restaurant that I plan to continue to frequent for the coming years! read more

Sashimi was good but not super flavorful. Maki was also pretty good. Bento box is overall tasty and a good deal.

Service was very bad: asked us to move 2 times, our next table also thought they were very rude. We had to pay in advance, the food tasted like leftover in fridge for a week, and the dishes were very DIRTY and smells badly. THE WORST RESTO we have ever been! read more
