This place shouldn't be considered an Indian restaurant. None of the food tasted or looked Indian. The owner is Chinese and the cooks are Hispanic. There's nothing Indian about this place. The naan didn't even taste or look like naan. It tasted dry, then and burnt. The food we ordered was horrible and the service was pretty bad. Their mango lassi wasn't good either. The ambiance was mediocre at best. We ended up not finishing our food and decided to pay and leave. If you want Indian food, this is definitely not the place. read more

This place is Tucktaway in north Hollywood! There is parking in the plaza. There is a lot of food options here, but I saw a TikTok video on this place so I was curious because ever since I moved to LA I've been meaning to find a great Indian restaurant! This place was completely empty, which made me a little nervous for dinner, but the server was super sweet and while I was waiting for my friend to arrive the server, gave us complementary soup! Which was very sweet! They have so many selection of naan-which is insane! The chicken here is super tender and it wasn't dry at all! Feb 27.2024 Dinner tonight was terrific! The chicken tikka masala was better than my last foray into Indian food at Anar, what with the chicken mushroom curry. Tikka masala is a tricky dish to get just right: there needs to be good quality chicken, of course, but what separates the men from the boys is the sauce. I've had it be off for its sweetness or spiciness, for the texture being just too runny or, conversely, too thick and gloppy-- in short, there are a whole host of instruments in the symphony and if one is off? Then it's no bueno. I'm happy to report that Anar's tikka masala begins with a generous portion of chicken in nicely cubed preparation and the rich, creamy sauce is not too spicy when ordered with "medium spice level" and it's the perfect viscosity (9/10). Ladled over their excellent saffron rice and paired with a cup of their homemade soup that is just delicious for just $3 more and you have a hearty meal that is sure to make you want to return... loved it. read more

I went to the restaurant at the beginning of Friday lunch service. The place was pretty empty, I guess this is more of an evening spot. its quite easy to miss, right next to Panda Express. I opted to do a quick takeout, ordered Chicken nan, cucumber salad, samosas and Shrimp Biryani. The order took about 30 minutes to get ready. The Briyani was very tasteful. Rice cooked perfectly and sauce and spices were very delicious. Samosas as well, cooked really well. A bit on the dryer side but good stuff. The cucumber salad, must have been one of the most sour dish I have eaten in my adult life. Someone must have used the wrong measuring spoon. This would be my first time eating chicken nan so I wasn't sure what to expect. The chicken was a bit light on flavor, specifically after the face altering experience of ingesting massive amount of cucumber drowning in vinegar. The nan was very thing and broke apart when trying to peel off. The only way to really eat it, is to pinch and pull it apart, pop it in and eat it. Not terrible but not sure if it's something I would order again. Since I did take out, I can't say much for how the staffs work, they seemed professional and courteous. read more

Friendly service, very affordable with 2 for 1 deals, fast prep, delicious food, a wealth of selections to choose from, if you're craving Indian food, check it out asap. My favorites are the paratha, chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, and mango lassi. The paratha is large, soft and crisp at the same time, flakey, and absolutely perfect. Probably my single favorite item on the menu. Chicken tikka masala is my go to pairing with paratha or naan. Served hot, creamy, with chunks of tender chicken cubes, it's comfort food for the soul. Mango lassi is always delicious and complements anything eaten here. Rich, sweet, and yummy, you may want to get a couple for yourself to drink the next day as well. Tandoori chicken is a staple dish in Indian culture, and Anar's does it justice. Tender, great flavor, sitting on a bed of delicious bell peppers and onions. Winter is coming, so try the chicken soup as well. It's one of the best around. They even have chicken wings, which are amazing. It can be so hard to find affordable Indian food (at least in my experience) in LA! The lunch special at Anar is such a steal. Make sure to order directly from the restaurant because it is so much cheaper than third party apps or online ordering platforms, plus better for the restaurant. I got the lamb curry lunch special which comes with rice and a piece of naan, plus I added an extra order of garlic basil naan. I like spicy but usually err on the side of caution when trying a new spot, so I ordered "medium" which had hardly any spice whatsoever. Next time (and there will be a next time!) I'll be sure to order spicier. Even without the heat, the curry was super flavorful and delicious. The naan was not the best I've ever had, and I preferred the plain naan over the garlic basil. read more

Ordered T.O. the other night and was very pleased. Both the chicken tikka and the chicken tikka masala were very tasty and rich, as was the lamb mushroom. All the meat -- including the lamb -- was very lean, no chewy bits. Ordered everything medium just in case but it was a bit too mild. Next time going for the spicy-er option. Chutney, rice, and naan were all standard Indian fare, although the portions of the chutney and rice were more than a bit on the skimpy side. They give you so much delicious sauce with the dishes but nothing to mop it up with. And it's too good to go to waste. My 4th year in. Still exceptional. Delivery is super-fast, without compromising quality. I remain a huge fan, and I'm very grateful for all the magnificent service over many years. They're very nice people, and they make amazing food. My two favorites: Chicken Jalfrezi and Beef Madras. Both succulent. Tasty as hell. 'Very hot' is not too hot (for me, at least). It just has a very edgy bite; it isn't a killer. If you enjoy 'spicy' and little bit of 'oomph!', then go 'hot' or 'very hot'. Your palette will love you for it. Take-out is best because the business has very, very limited seating - it's really tiny - maybe 3 or 4 booths. If you're visiting the business, then 'hit it & quit it'. Take out or delivery, all the way, unless its a quiet day. Try to order direct, rather than via third-parties (like Uber Eats, for example). First, it's cheaper for you (on average, I save $10 on each order by calling direct), and second, it's probably better for the restaurant (as in, no third party commissions). I want them to stay in business for many years to come, so I think it's better to order direct. Everybody wins by cutting-out the middle man. Support local businesses, especially when they exceptional like this one. It's a business I am very happy to support. In my mind, the best Indian take-out in Hollywood. Period. read more

For ten dollars, it's on the more bargain side of lunch specials. Comes with rice and naan. The chicken tikka masala had a nice smooth texture and a lot of flavor. I ordered it hot, and that's exactly what I received. It wasn't insanely hot, but just right. The naan was slightly burned. And the rice was a little bit unseasoned. Naan bread was good as was the mixed platter but special mention goes to the cheese naan and the Indian fried rice ( a rarity in my humble opinion). Samosas were pedestrian but the butter chicken and lamb korma were very good. Also liked the gulab jamen ( a little lacking in fragrant rose scent but tasty nonetheless ). I've really only had their chicken tikka masala and garlic naan, but I can say this place has my favorite of both in LA (my other favorite is Curry Hut in Fullerton which might have a slight edge only because it's cheaper, but I'm never down there anymore so moot point). I remember I was hungover AND feeling the effects of the second Pfizer shot, and nothing sounded good to eat, until my friend suggested tikka masala from Anar, and when it arrived I was REVIVED. Really rich and delicious masala sauce that's the perfect consistency, delicious chicken, and huge piece of naan with tons of flavor. Great portions as well; one order of tikka masala (comes with rice) and naan is a dinner and lunch for me. I've seen other reviews that said the masala was bland and not salted, and I can say they are either lying or somehow had a bad batch lol. I'll have to try some of the other dishes, but chicken tikka masala is always my go to (typical white guy LOL) and I will keep coming back for more from Anar! read more

I was starving and my usual go to wasn't open for another hour so I came across this place. At first, I wasn't sure about the authenticity of this place because they have beef items on their menu, but I figured it was a way of adapting to the local population. I went through the reviews as well, and they seemed to have good reviews so I decided to try it for myself. After receiving the order, I'd have to say it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great enough for me to go back. For starters, the vegetable soup that was included with the vegetarian dinner for 2 was piping hot and delicious! I also ordered a side of vegetable samosas because that's one of my favorites, but was disappointed. It wasn't bad, but it was cold and the chutneys that accompanied them were so watery and bland. For the main dishes, I chose Chana Masala, Saag Paneer and Baingan Bharta. I also added an order of Chicken Tikka Masala because my bf LOVE this dish. The most disappointing part of the order was the fact that the Chana Masala looked and tasted identical to the Chicken Tikka Masala. They both were delicious but if I wanted a double order of tikka masala I would have ordered it. The Chicken Tikka masala had huge chunks of chicken and was a very good value compared to other places that skimp out on the chicken.The Saag Paneer was pretty good and I loved the fact that there were big chunks of paneer with every bite. The Baingan Bharta was okay, as I'm used to having more of the ginger flavor come through that it almost seemed bland. Lastly, the vegetarian dinner for 2 included dessert which came in a small container are used for condiments. So my favorite place was closed down for the night and my grandparents really wanted Indian food - so away to Yelp I went to find something near their place that seemed like a win. Anar is located on a shoddy little Hollywood plaza that I normally wouldn't take a second glance at. There's a decently-sized parking lot, but good luck trying to get a spot -- every asshole in a Prius took up 1.5 spots, so it was annoyingly difficult to park. Inside, the restaurant is small and a bit cramped - particularly if you are a larger party. You have to sit in the middle, right next to the door - the back table is for takeout / delivery. The mismatched chairs there are kind of charming in their own way, but it's not the place for dates OR business - the door slams every minute with someone barging in or out, and lets the cold from outside seep in. Brrrrr. So the review is seemingly negative so far, but what far makes up for it is the food and the service. Food: everything was delicious and JUST what I wanted, i.e. "medium" wasn't non-spicy, but also wasn't "burn-your-mouth-what-the-fuck-is-in-this" spicy. The rogan josh was the only thing I found just okay - I really enjoyed the veg biryani and tandoori chicken, and the shrimp korma was so awesome I ordered another one just because I wanted to stop sharing with the group (yes, I am THAT person). There wasn't much of a difference between the chicken tikka masala and the chicken makhani to me, which is sad--but both were still good in that "know what to expect" kind of way. Service was good. I got there super early for my reservation, and everyone else got there super late. They let me hang out at the table anyway and got me some drinks. I ended up just placing an order for everyone because I got tired of waiting, and luckily (not luckily?) everyone showed up right when the food did. Price was on par with comparable restaurants, so couldn't complain. We got the okra baje, spinach paneer,tofu coconut ginger, rice and the naan cilantro . Oh my god !!! I was amazed the spinach paneer creamy , smith rich texture it was to die for. The okra we got the spicy , it's spicy it was good perfectly seasoned and cooked melt in ur mouth . Last was the tofu coconut. Oh my god this was Devine it's creamy has notes of ginger and the coconut milk sweet and savoury. The rice was cooked well and don't get me start on the naan oh was perfectly done!! great soft texture u can taste the chille spice and the cilantro. Its . . . Okay. Not the best Indian food I've had but not the worst food to eat. There were five of us and we had a wide variety of dishes which were acceptable for the moment. We were all famished so quality and ingredients were not the primary concern. To be honest, it seemed that every dish I tried, had too much salt. Starting off with the vegetable soup and popadums and then moving on to the main dishes: Chicken Tiki Masala, Chicken Sag, Tofu Masala, Sag Aloo, Aloo Gobi and Chana Masala. Several of us finished off with the Kheer (Indian Bread Pudding). Overall, the food lacked a flavor for my taste buds. The service was somewhat slow and indifferent. This place is small and dark and not as comfortable as I would have liked but I guess that is to be expected with a B rated eatery in a Hollywood strip mall. Anar labels all of its vegan options and is the only (North) Indian restaurant in Central Hollywood to do that, to my knowledge. The place is small and drafty in a stripmall, so don't come here for a date; it's more of a takeout/delivery joint. The vegetable samosas ($3) are small and not great. I hated that they seemed to mix tamarind sauce into the interior potato filling, ruining the taste and smell. The tarka dal, vegan by default ($10) was light and savory; they did a good job with this one. The chana coconut curry, vegan by default ($10) is a rare dish that you almost never see at North Indian restaurants. While it looked and smelled great, the coconut milk they used imparted way too much sweetness, ruining what should have been a savory wonder. Swing and miss. The bhindi bhaje, vegan by default ($10), was good---not too oily and not over-cooked. I like India's Restaurant in Silverlake better, but Anar is respectable for North Indian food. read more

This is the best Indian restaurant in Hollywood! The biggest blessing about my current place is that it's so close to Anar. They have the best vegetable masala I've ever tried, I get it every time I go in. TONS of vegan/ vegetarian options. The staff is so nice! They even give you paper plates for Togo orders which is super thoughtful and handy. If you're vegan you have to try this place, I'm very picky with a good restaurant and I have tried a ton of good Indian food, but nothing beats anars masala. The tables on the inside are so cute as well and it's one of my favorite places to go sit down and enjoy a meal.
