My company was doing an event in San Pedro at the Doubletree Hilton, a small event. We asked the hotel event facility if we could use some of their smaller uprights (rather then going to back to the shop to grab ours), they said no problem. Someone shows up and says they actually belong to them, and that they are the hotel's in-house/preferred event company. We apologize, explained we did ask one of the hotel staff there who had said no problem, and ask them in turn if they are avail to rent or if they'd like them back - we hadn't even set them up yet and the event wasn't starting till the following day, we would've been fine without them. They said it's no problem, we can rent them. We discuss, and then they disappear. Next thing I know it's the event day and I'm receiving an invoice, $450.00 for 6 uprights. (We have our own drape, our own base plates, everything else). Uprights are usually about $6.00-12.00 to rent per. I have multiple other invoices from other rental companies with an average of $6.00-12.00 per upright.
I assumed they would charge a delivery fee, that wasn't a problem (usually priced at $50). I even left room to pay double the average cost. ($120-$150).
We then receive an invoice for $450.00 during the event (once we had set up and the event had started). The invoice stated "set up" as well, and there was no set up, only the rental. I reached out to her, sure it was a mistake, and was told because of our "circumstances" they were inflating the price. (I attached emails to this review as well as her invoice).
As if that wasn't bad enough, she shows up in the middle of the event threatening to tear down the uprights if I didn't give her a check right then (in front of everyone at the event). I had offered to pay via my debit card earlier when the event hadn't yet started, but I was told a check later would be better. Now I realized it must've been planned.
Analexa - I would have worked to find another company if I had known you had planned to not only overcharge - but extort. I assumed we were all professionals. That was my mistake. We're a small company, despite what you assumed, or perhaps you just don't care who you take advantage of. I paid the invoice, but you and others looking for an event company should definitely be made aware of this.
Please, if you read this, do your research - get a couple quotes from other companies. If you do go with them, get the pricing in writing with signatures and witnesses. Nobody deserves to be extorted in this way. read more
