I'm not sure I know what "authentic" Mexican food is. I mean I grew up in the US eating Mexican from about the time the first Ole' Taco showed up on the West Coast. I think Anahuacalli is supposed to be Mayan anyway - a special sliver of the genre I guess? *shrugs* The food was good - the spices were a richer blend than the typical tomato based salsa. They use cocoa in many of their dishes. Margarita was good but not too strong. The chips and salsa were also fine, but both exceedingly limited in quantity. The chips come out in a small bowl and they don't like you to call them tortilla chips (I can't remember what they are "supposed to be called"). I 'm pretty sure the refills are not free. Main entree - tostada was the highlight - richly spiced, light cheese and lots of brown sauce. And, the service was nice and attentive. The meal of a guacamole starter, one entree and one margarita was about 35 Euro - which is to say, a little salty. read more

First official dinner in Paris and it's Mexican food, what can I say, I was hungry and this place was right next to where I lived. Small menu selections for entrees. Ordered their guac for appetizer (I was feeling avocado-y) and boy, I've never been to any restaurant that served guac that BIG. It just seems bottomless! The chips that came with the guac though were too brittle, kept breaking every time you try to scoop some up. Good guac but definitely needs more salt. I ordered the duck with cream sauce, good choice it was. The duck wasn't too ducky and cooked right. The sauce that came with it was a green, avocado-y sauce with some sour cream to give it that kick. It was a good combination in flavors, well recommended from the owner (at least I believe she was the owner, the only woman that worked there without a uniform). Also got to try their beef fajitas. It was decent, good flavors but just very average. Not real wow factor but not disappointing either. This dish also comes with a lot of guac. The owner lady was super sweet and spoke English well. English menus were also available and service was good but extremely slow. I wouldn't be back here, just because this is Paris, there are so much better/more potential out there. read more

When you are in Paris and your friend really wants Mexican food. We have one friend who was really NOT feeling the French cuisine and wanted some Mex (her fave) - so we yelped and found this place. They were really friendly - it helped that my other friend speaks Spanish - the food was really good. Mex is not my favorite, but this was some good quality stuff. I am from Southern California originally so Mexican food is all judged by that standard for me - however, being in France - this was pretty awesome, i have to say. I was sad that they were out of the Mexican Cocoa though - but we were among the last seating of the night having been running late all day. I is a small little place, but very clean and well run. I deliberately avoided the London Mexican debate, so I guess I will wade into this Parisienne one then. What do you say when you just arrive in Paris and your Parisienne friend takes you to a "surprise restaurant" which turns out to be Mexican? Well. Apparently A LOT more than what you say when you go to Mexican in London. The margaritas were tip tip top, strong, large and delicious and my enchilada "au gratin", whiles not necessarily completely authentic; answered my complaints usually about enchilada- ie it was au gratin'ed like there was no tomorrow. The beans that came with it was also sublime. My friend was less enthusiastic about her mole as it was essentially a massive lump of turkey covered in Mole sauce with some rice and home made tortilla. She was delighted with the tortilla though. This little joint is run by a family with lots of typical mexican decor and I must say; I rather wait for my next Paris trip for a Mexican trip than suffer the "mexican food" they serve in London. read more

I love all these Americans talking about "authentic Mexican food" because they are from California, New Mexico or wherever- Even if you're from San Diego or McAllen you'll have a hard time knowing what is real Mexican food if you don't drive farther south and away from the beautiful resorts and hotels that just give you what you are used to. Now...Anahuacalli is THE BEST Mexican restaurant I've ever tried outside of my beautiful country, Mexico. I love this place! The ambiance is great, very classy with mariachi music playing.The service is impeccable. Margot (waitress) gives the best service and makes sure that everyone is having an amazing experience while here. I've been to this place several times, one of them celebrating my birthday and I've had such a good time. Their group menu is amazing ($$$$) and you really get a great latin service ( almost-impossible to find in french restaurants). Their pollo en mole, enchiladas and ceviche are to die for. I prefer Fajitas a few blocks down in the 6th because i find the food there to be better. Here, they start you out with free tortilla chips and a tiny bowl of red and green sauce. The red sauce was GROSS but the green sauce is good. They refill it if you ask politely, both the sauce and the chips. For starters, we had guacamole and mexican chorizo in pitas. They were quite good For main courses, my boyfriend got the tamale, which i enjoyed, and I got the fajita. The fajita had good quality meat with a scoop of guac and a tiny tiny portion of beans. It came with only three small tortilla wraps and you have to ask for me. It was good - no other huge complaints. The margaritas are expensive and gave me a headache. It was good as well. Overall, the food is decent there, but it didn't wow me. The price I found to be on the uber expensive side. Every main dish was 18EUR+ and the margarita was 50EUR for a pitcher. The portions are pretty big in sizes so if possible it would be better to share. Service was okay. I probably wouldnt come back and would be in search of better places. read more

If you're from the west coast USA, as I am, then you're sure to miss one important staple food from your childhood: great Mexican food. Anahuacalli is run by a family of immigrants from Mexico, and the moment you enter you're in a different world and may forget you're in Paris! They guide you to your seat accompanied by lively traditional music. Then they set before you the food of the gods. The clouds parted above and a golden beam of light shone down upon the homemade salsa we were given; along with the guacamole and corn chips on our table! I could not contain myself. I stuffed myself silly. But that isn't all. The menu is full of all those Mexi-favorites you've been missing: burritos slathered in cheesy goodness; enchiladas stuff full of peppers and spicy rice; mole negro chicken delights; and much more. Furthermore, they bring not just one Margarita to your table, but a full pitcher of icy deliciousness from heaven! Suffice it to say this: if you've been missing some good Mexican food in Paris, then Anahua Calli is the place to go. I've finally found a place in Paris that even other Mexi-food snobs out there are sure to love. Cost: Dinner with drinks is likely to run about 25-30 euros per person. The one con: it is VERY expensive... too expensive for a taco. But, with so little choice in Paris, we are stuck with what we can find. What to do after: You can walk up to Rue Mouffetard and get a drink on Place de la Contrascarpe or head over to the Paris Mosque for a mint-tea and dessert. read more

I had been to Anahuacalli back in 2009 and really enjoyed it, so I figured I'd return to see if it's still good. It didn't fail to live up to my expectations: The food quality was still top notch. We ordered the guacamole and standard margaritas to start - they were as good as any in the US. My wife ordered the cochinita pibil (pulled pork) and I the mixiotes (lamb in ancho chili sauce). Both were well prepared and presented; they tasted quite fresh and the spices were subtle but sophisticated. We had the flan for desert, which was arguably the best I've ever had. As for the service at Anahuacalli, it was good although it can be somewhat inattentive. The restaurant is smallish with maybe 15 tables, but that just gave it a cozy feel. The atmosphere is casual and chatty, making it quite enjoyable for us. And the owner was quite friendly, talking with us about the details of our meals (in Spanish - she's an authentic Mexican). The only downside is that the prices, especially for margaritas, can be a bit high. In any event, I'd recommend Anahuacalli without hesitation if you are looking for something different in Paris. read more

I would gladly give this restaurant another 0.5 points if I could. The food and interior is above average clearly, but what puts a gold star for this place in my book are two things, the Margaritas and Cuitlacoche. The Margaritas are very generous in size and well mixed so if you visit here, do not pass up on the chance of trying one. The other treat, the infamous Cuitlacoche is the stuff of nightmares, really. It is infected corn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn_smut) and it is served as a grey paste as an addition to a serving. If you, like me, tend to be a bit adventurous when it comes to food, you can't really pass up a chance to sample this oddity. Don't get me wrong, this is the only exception, all other items on the menu is what you expect and probably came for when going on a Mexican restaurant. It's not completely authentic, but it's really good. And given the lack of any other even decent Mexican food in Paris it makes it a real treat. The salsa is hot and spicy, the drinks are done well. If I have a complaint it is that the tortilla chips are a little over-cooked and hard. But still better than anywhere else in Paris so it's a small issue. read more

What a great place to eat Mexican food! All the dishes we ordered were delicious, tasted like the best restaurants in Mexico... and like homemade food! The service is excellent too. Very delicious and reasonably priced... for Paris. Delicious Mexican food in a fun neighborhood. The staff was excellent and tri-lingual. They spoke French, Spanish and English. Margaritas were made perfectly. You could still taste the tequilla, but it wasn't overwhelming. The queso con chorizo was a greasey delicious awesomeness. Superb ! This Restaurant it is my preferred one in Paris. I discovered it last year and I tell you it is rare to taste fresh food in that way. The people there are very welcome and friendly. Mainly the cooking is centre America and forget about tex mex in this place. I strongly suggest to taste every time you are going there a different dish, you will not be disappointed. i have to admit i have a pretty high standard for mexican food, but after being away from california for a while i decided to search out an okay option to relieve my mexi-cravings when they got too intense. maybe it's the cheese they use (possibly feta) but i could NOT get into the meal and my friend that i brought along wasn't a fan either. it too FOREVER to get our meal, although they were super sweet and brought us multiple baskets of chips, i don't think it was worth the wait. something about the food was just off. the rice was bland, guacamole was decent, but the cheese in my chile releno super threw me off. what's wrong with a nice cheddar or jack? read more

Well. I came here because I had a bad day and was craving Mexican food. I'm from So Cal so to me comfort food is Mexican food. It's next to my house and I had been meaning to try it. But normally I go to Candelaria for my Mexican fix. I kind of regret not doing that tonight. The guacamole was ok. Not great. Seemed like it was sitting out for a while and not fresh (discolored). Which is very possible because I sat for an hour after ordering it before I saw it. Then I waited another half hour before I asked where my enchiladas were and they say "oh it's coming, it's to go right?" In what crazy world does it take 1.5 hours to provide to-go enchiladas. And no, I'm sitting t a table with a napkin in my lap. I plan on eating here. When my enchiladas did arrive, they weren't what I ordered. But I was so hungry I ate it. Wasn't bad. Clearly comfort is not what I'm getting here tonight. read more

I have been going to Anahuacalli "irregularly" for many years now and it is still one of the best "authentic" mexican restaurants in Paris. In my opinion it competes head-to-head with Hacienda del Sol in the 6th close to Port Royal. read more

When Monsieur and I found Anahuacalli, we'd experienced a very disappointing Mexican restaurant the previous night. Now we were on a mission to find the best Mexican in Paris. At Anahuacalli, I think we just might have done that. There are two sittings as opposed to being able to reserve in the usual way. We went for a 9pm sitting and found this particular restaurant system worked very well. We were seated almost immediately, served with tortilla chips and hot salsas and our margaritas arrived almost immediately in chunky hand-blown glassed with deliciously salted rims. To start I thoroughly enjoyed sharing the Tu y Yo (You and Me) starter plate for two. The cactus salad was particularly tasty, typically there wasn't quite enough guacamole for the greedy pair that we are, the ceviche was fresh and perfectly marinaded and the chicken taquitos were also good. As a main course Monsieur ordered enchillada, his benchmark for proper Mexican food, and it passed with flying colours. I couldn't decide whether or not to have the mole, but in the end chose the pescado - white fish which had been slow-cooked in a delicious tomato, peppers, cactus and onion sauce with citrus tang. It was probably one of the best fish dishes I've ever eaten. Sadly we hadn't left room for a dessert, but given that we visit Paris a fair amount, it's highly likely we'll return to Anahuacalli for the turkey mole, more margaritas and some of their tequila-flambeed corn cake. read more

Yes, as the others say if you are craving authentic Mexican food while in Paris this is a place you want stop at. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and the food is on point. Honestly, this place is just fabulous. The hostess greeted us with genuinely and ushered us to a perfectly lovely table sans a reservation. We arrived around 7:30 (having a 9:30 reservation to see the Eiffel Tower) and she graciously told us the table was ours until 9:30 (typical Parisian dinner hour). The food was delicious, the wine selection thorough considering, and the fellow diners a smart mix of locals and tourists. Overall, this was a fantastic experience. read more
