That was not acceptable. I called MIND and got an appointment ASAP. I saw the incredible Dr. Fellows and his resident. The time and care they took to gather my information surprised me. Then they discussed my case, came up with a plan, returned, and spent more quality time explaining the plan to help me. Part of the plan was carried out by Dori, who expertly arranged to get my MRI on the same day if I was willing to wait a bit. I did. The team was fantastic. My mom died from a rare autoimmune disease that I have a 50% chance of inheriting. Her symptoms? Sudden hearing loss, tremors, & short-term memory loss. Exactly what I am experiencing. He told me my sudden glaucoma was caused by Lasik surgery last year & my sudden hearing loss by sleep apnea! That is just outrageous information from a specialist. Never mind my genetic predisposition to an autoimmune disease. He just ignored that and told me that it wasn't important. Yes, you read that right. He stated that Lasik surgery caused my glaucoma. He stated that sleep apnea caused my hearing loss. All of my neurological issues have manifested in a 4 month period of time, all of a sudden. He ordered zero tests & just wanted to know what other drs had told me might be wrong. Told me to come back in 6 months to give him results of tests other drs have ordered. So why bother going back to him at all? He somewhat treated one SYMPTOM of what is wrong with me, hand tremors, he did not bother to try to DIAGNOSE my issues. Just to come back and let him know what other drs come up with. He should have ordered tests himself or referred me to a dr. who is more of an expert, not spin me off with Klonopin. The 2 hour wait time was completely unacceptable. Bedside manner very uncomfortable. No level of trust in this dr. because he honestly did barely anything, did not explain too much, seemed rushed. The other dr. working under him then told me that my insurance would never cover genetic testing and she knew this as a fact. Except my insurance actually DOES cover genetic testing, you just have to do more paperwork. This dr. did not care enough to order any tests whatsoever to try to get to the root of my sudden hearing loss, sudden glaucoma, tremors, and memory loss. Nothing. Just leaves me hanging with come back in 6 months and let him know what other drs have told me was wrong. He could of at least tried. He did not, he did nothing, it was a huge wasted visit and again, the 2 hour wait time was outrageous. The rest of the staff and that hospital are 5 star, unfortunately this dr. was not.

After he walked into the room, his first question was, "Do you have cancer?" WHAT??? Asking several more odd questions, I finally explained why I was there. He asked if I had pain in my neck and I said no, just 2 fingers that are numb. He proceeded to say I will most likely need surgery to fix the pain in my neck (that I don't have) and if I don't have the surgery within the next month or so, that I will probably be paralyzed by December. He entered orders for me to get an X-ray and MRI and return to his office in 2 weeks. I had my sister accompany me, because no one in my family believed that I heard the Dr. correctly about becoming paralyzed. The second appointment confirmed by me and my sister that Dr. Elia did not listen to anything I said and just wanted to perform an unnecessary surgery on me. A surgery he said would limit my range of motion when turning my head. I asked if it would fix my 2 numb fingers and he said no, I can't fix that. Needless to say, I sought a second opinion with another neurosurgeon, Dr. Stanley Lee and he is amazing. Thankfully, it is now November 2024, I am not paralyzed. However, I probably need to seek therapy for the fear of becoming paralyzed that I can not seem to get out of my mind.

My family member was immediately seen and the diagnostic process was quickly started. The hospital my family member was at couldn't support the needs of my family so they were transferred. Mostly everyone I interacted with was empathic and really wanted to help. I have been at larger institutions like UCLA that wants to give you in and out as quickly as possible. The staff did a great job on involving experts to help identify the root cause.

A Tribute to Doctor Lucia Zamorano Neurosurgeon Birmingham Michigan and the Detroit Medical Center…read more My mother is 95 years of age and lives on her own in Ontario Canada. At the beginning of 2014 she began to complain of numbness in her legs when she walked and this quickly advanced to acute pain over the next several months making it painful to walk more than a few steps. A CT Scan which we were able to arrange within a week in Michigan, revealed disc bulges at multiple levels impinging on the nerves causing the pain and inability to walk. The recommended course of action was to try the least invasive approach first that being cortisone shots with fluoroscopy into the afflicted area. We were able to do this within two months thanks to the cooperation of all the good people at the Pain Management Center of Mercy Hospital in Port Huron MI. Unfortunately it was not successful and the time came to identify a neurosurgeon that could and would perform a discectomy on a 95 year old patient. You might wonder why with her having medical coverage in Ontario my mother did not have all of the above procedures performed there at no cost. First despite what anyone says patient care is rationed in Ontario. The government has decided to spend a certain amount of GDP on health care and that's it. The rationing is achieved by "setting priorities" as to who will secure the services first and if you happen to be 95 years old the odds of your rising to the top of the list before you die are remote to none. On a macro basis there is perhaps some logic to the approach but when it's your family, not so much. Unfortunately this is what we have to look forward to in the US under Obamacare. The good news is that there is still Switzerland, Singapore and a number of other good medical centers where you avail yourself of medical care as long as you are willing to pay for it. But I digress as the primary purpose of my writing this is to extoll the virtues of a wonderfully skilled and dedicated neurosurgeon, Doctor Lucia Zamorano of Birmingham Michigan. When you are a doctor and have a 95 year old person with a pacemaker approach you to perform a five hour operation, you have to stop and consider what are the upsides to taking this on compared to the potential risks to reputation and given the litigious nature of our society, risks of a lawsuit in the event something goes wrong. Our torte law needs reform so that we no longer put our doctors in this ethical dilemma. After reviewing the CT scan and having a consulting visit with my mother, Doctor Zamorano did not hesitate to say she thought she could help and would be willing to perform the operation. I must first commend Doctor Zamorano for her compassion. As of this writing it is now three weeks since my mother's five hour operation at the Detroit Medical Center Harper University Hospital where she stayed an outpatient overnight. She is now able to walk pain free about a quarter of a mile using a mobile walker as a security blanket. Prior to the onset of pain at the beginning of the year she had been going to the gym doing a half hour on the bicycle and a half hour with free weights, leg presses etc. Our goal, thanks to the wonderful work of Doctor Zamorano is to get her back in the gym by September. Beyond that however Doctor Zamorano has given her back her mobility, her life and the ability to live in her own home. Doctor Zamorano I salute you as being a compassionate, caring and skilled doctor who I would recommend highly to anyone needing the services of a skilled neurosurgeon. I would also like to thank the wonderful people at DMC both the Administrative staff of the International Division who were very well organized, caring and minimized the bureaucratic process as well as the Anesthesiologist Team who were exceedingly attentive and again willing to take on the risks of dealing with a 95 year old patient. I would encourage any Canadian in need of medical care before they expire or endure untold pain for a long period to contact the International Division of the Detroit Medical Center.
