OK, it's a Saturday evening in the summer in Cheyenne. So what do you do? Play a video game? Get…read moreloaded at a bar? Watch TV? How about going to real, old school stock car races? For real stock car races with real smells, real noise, real wrecks, real attitudes! That sugar coated NASCAR crap on TV doesn't come close to the experience of seeing it live in front of you. A little red neck fun on the cheap. This venue is a quarter mile paved asphalt track with just a touch of bank on the corners. They run multiple types of cars each night including various types of stocks, modifiers and (egad) Legends. I remember my dwarf and sprint driver friends saying "it's better to be a legend than to drive one". So true. This track has nice bleachers, ample parking, food and beer sales. It a cheap $10 night's fun. There are family-friendly areas marked off in the stands where no smoking or drinking is allowed. Nice. Each race is pretty short, only about 20 laps. On a quarter mile track, that can go pretty quickly except when there are spinouts, wrecks and other mayhem. And that does happen. It takes a bit to go get the hook and pull apart the carnage. The fun bit is with all the safety gear and the short track, people don't get hurt, but they do tangle up! So, as they say at our California track "let's trade some paint!". I was in town to visit my son at the local air base and hauled his crew of jokers over to the track for the evening. We had a blast. This is rural Americana at its finest.

The speedway is very small and the race cars are often slamming into each other. I am well aware they do this at large speedways but it is hard to discern if this was happening because of the size of the speedway or if i just was witnessing just normal racing 'etiquette'. The crowd to put it mildly is interesting and if you like to people watch then this is the place to go. It seems like about three trailer courts dropped off their tenants here for the evening. Definitely a culture I am not a part of and that is OK by me. This year (The year of 2011) the season has been cut short due to bad weather and threats against the drivers. Wait. Threats against the drivers? By whom? With a rough crowd like this who knows how the actual drivers treat each other. A rough and tumble good time to say the least.

We were quite surprised to see the owner, a woman but I didn't get her name, to show up with her daughter (I'm guessing a couple years old or slightly under) accompanying her and wearing no pants and no underpants at all. I asked the girl "where are your pants?" As her mother was paying no attention to her and restocking the milk. Her mother said, "oh, I thought she had a diaper on." The mother made no move to remedy the situation and the customers were all very uncomfortable as the child climbed on a chair with her lower body completely exposed. We were there about 10 minutes and the mother never gave the slightest indication that she cared. Here's my take on it: anyone who pays that little attention to a child is not going to take much care of the animals and sanitation. After tasting the food, too, we won't be back.

The staff is super friendly and will give you information on the mansion. You are allowed to walk the interior and do a self guided tour and take photos. I love the retro furniture and learning the history of the area and people that have served Wyoming and lived in the home. Free to the public, you should really consider making a small donation if you visit. The tour is self-guided and we had the place to ourselves. Every room was well appointed with period furniture-- well it was a Governors house after all. The laundry room was interesting, as was the fallout shelter, for those of us who lived through the 60s. I'm glad we had a chance to visit and "see how some politicians might have lived".

Cheyenne Depot Plaza may be the most accurate physical representation of Cheyenne you will find…read more The building itself is genuinely impressive, though the site overall functions far more as a very nice local stop than a true destination attraction. The centerpiece is the former Union Pacific Depot, constructed in the late 1880s. Designed by architect Henry Van Brunt, the heavy sandstone structure and its 120-foot clock tower remain the defining architectural landmark of the city. Fully restored and designated a National Historic Landmark, it stands as a grand reminder of the transcontinental railroad era that birthed Cheyenne. Inside, the Cheyenne Depot Museum details the rail history of the American West with historical artifacts and an extensive model railroad layout. We did not buy tickets for the full exhibit hall, choosing instead to check out the gift shop and poke around the main lobby. While we were walking through, a young girl was holding her birthday party right there in the historic lobby. It was sweet, charming, and just a tiny bit melancholy. There was nothing wrong with the party itself, which was a perfectly nice family gathering. It was simply the realization that in Cheyenne, a National Historic Landmark double-hats as a primary venue for an eight-year-old's birthday cake. It felt like a wonderfully authentic, highly specific snapshot of local life. The outdoor plaza is a clean brick square that hosts community gatherings and live music during the warmer months. On a quiet afternoon, it is a pleasant spot to walk around, admire the stone masonry, and absorb a bit of Western history without having to work particularly hard for it. Cheyenne is a small city with an easygoing pace that seems to have completely avoided the invention of modern urgency. The Depot building itself is magnificent, but the overall plaza experience is a thirty-minute pit stop rather than a reason to book a trip. If you are already traveling through southern Wyoming, it is well worth pulling off the highway to take a look. Just do not expect a sprawling tourist district once you get there.
