Dropped my nephew off at the Amtrak / Metrolink station in Simi Valley a couple weeks ago. It is literally a stop for Amtrak - you need to buy your ticket online ahead of time, as there is no ticket machine there for them. For Metrolink, yes, but Amtrak, no. Fortunately, I was able to order / pay for his ticket right from my phone while we waited for the train to come. It was running a few minutes late. Was able to get that determined from their website, too. Gave us a few extra minutes to say our goodbyes and reflect on his journey ahead. From this station you can head south to San Diego, or up the coast to the north on the Coast Starlight route, all the way to Seattle. For my nephew's trip, it was a convenient way for him to get to Santa Barbara. Once the train arrived, I gave him one more hug and watched him board one of the double-decker passenger cars. The implied romanticism of a rail trip briefly took over, as I wished that I was hopping on, too. Lots of free parking at the Simi station. There might be some restrictions on where / how long one can park, but since I was only there for a short time, didn't have to think more about that. Oh how I love riding the train along the coast of California! I have ridden the Amtrak a number of times over the years. The pros: you can relax and enjoy the view instead of having to drive and be stressed in traffic you can read books while on the train, look out the window, nap, or whatever you like! You can go to the café and order food and drinks! The bloody Mary is delicious! The cons: the train runs late a lot of the time. My worst delay was having to wait an hour and 10 minutes. They don't give you any comps or discounts either. So you kind of just have to sit there until your train arrives. Oh, and that over one hour delay was at a station with absolutely no working electrical plugs so my phone died on me and I sat w no way to let my family know I was okay. I noticed the train isn't as clean lately. I think they can do a better job of wiping down and cleaning. It smells a little musty inside. Some train cars smell like straight up farts inside. Overall, I really do enjoy riding the train, and as long as it isn't too delayed it really is a good time and worth it. read more

Not sure if Amtrak is to blame but every once in a awhile a train comes through Simi Valley laying on its horn for literally 15 minutes making sounds like SOS over and over. Another time the train just laid on the horn until I couldn't hear it anymore. It's the most annoying sound through town. It's always around 3am and if it is for an emergency reason - I get it however the conductor has a possible hatred towards this town because it's down right intentional the way the horn makes the intermittent honking over and over. 1.5 hours delay in Santa Barbara, broke before LA, now we have to change trains in LA if we get there tonight. Sounds like the train from hell thanks Amtrak! No wonder your staff is so stressed out and rude most of the time . Why did we pass a bill for a built fast train from LA to Vegas ? Oh..... So Vegas can make more money from tax payers $$$ . They should have spent that money trying to fix our existing infrastructure and make it better. So much for advising people to take the train and custom driving ! Going on a train is such a great experience to take with your kids. If only they could take care of the smells form the stations prior to coming on board. But I'm not complaining too much and also if they were to add seatbelt a or something a little more precautions to ensure my kiddies are safe that would be great too. read more

My friends and I decided to celebrate our friends 40th birthday by taking Amtrak from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles union station for the day. On our ride down to union station we had so much fun our conductor was extra nice and very helpful with all our needs. His name was Tom and wish all conductors could be as great as him. Unfortunately On our way back on train 777 we were all talking and reflecting on our day out, which most of us do not get as we are all parents. 15 minutes after boarding the train We had a conductor Mike Monroe come upstairs and literally yell at us from the back of the car and embarrassed us as if we were children. Informing us very rudely that we were being disruptive. Instead of a professional approach and walk up to us kindly and inform us that we my be a little loud he was rude and yelled. Then as if we didn't hear him the first time he announced on the intercom to the whole train as if to embarrass us again, asking my us to use our inside voices. Let me remind you we are all 40 year old woman. I believe that if someone is going to work for a large of company as Amtrak they should go through customer service training and learn to respect paying customers. Between the 11 of us in our group we spent almost $700 dollars and to be treated in such an unprofessional manner is not only disappointing but We feel we took Amtrak for an experience and it was destroyed by the disrespect of an employee. read more

I left San Diego to Santa Barbara...spent the extra bucks for biz class just because I thought there might be more seats in car or it might be quieter (There were not and it was not. Completely full...not worth the 40 buck upgrade btw) at any rate...engine problems and long story short slightly over two hours late. The engine problem delayed us about an hour then apparently it backed us up to wait for remainder of trip. I guess I naively thought amtrak ran more consistent but was told it's not always good option if you are on time schedule because they late often. I allowed an hour for variance but never imagined something this late. My bad...lesson learned. Not a good experience sadly and very late for important event. Allow tons of extra time if taking amtrak. read more

We take Amtrak train every year to the Avocado Festival in Carpenteria. It has always been a fun train trip. This year was very different. The train was very crowded and the only seats were in the back of the train. We travel with 3 moms and 4 kids so we are always hopeful to get seats together. We found seats bit apparently we were accidentally seated in the reserved section. The conductor Matt told us we had to get up and find other seats. He didnt care we were traveling with kids. While the train was moving he insisted we get up and move. Definately not the type of treatment I would expect for mothers traveling with their sons. read more

I love Amtrack ....reasonable fares and way less scummy then Greyhound ....take it from San Diego to Modesto/stockton/sac frequently ....I would give it five stars but a lot of times you have to do part of your trip on the bus ...and for some reason a lot of the bus drivers are rude or have some kind of issue ...noticed they dont treat their passengers well .....other then the bus part Amtrak is top notch cheap travel read more

Nothing like going to work on a Monday morning and hearing 2 Amtrak employees, (man and woman) in the cafe car 3 "arguing!!" Really, this went on for more than 5 minutes!. A rider asked them to please be quite. The male Amtrak rider Hispanic, wears glasses, short black hair, raised his voice to this rider and asked the rider if he wanted to be escorted back up to his seat!!. I spoke up to the male employee, and said it was inappropriate to have the conversation they were having and that he was speaking to the female in a disrespectful way. He replied back with, "you have no idea what I have to go through with her!" Okay these 2 need to deal with their personal issue with one another not in front of customers. I was offended by the way this male employee was talking to this female employee.. This was by far the most uncomfortable situation I have been in.. As their argument escalated I started to feel panicked!. Not knowing what would happen next. This made my ride from Moorpark to LA the 8:08AM train 5/22/17 extremely uncomfortable. I took the train from Simi Vally to Fullerton by myself. The train was an hour and a half late there is not any signs telling you it is going to be late I wish there was a way to let you know. I had to call to ask if it was going to be late. When I purchased my ticket it states that they will email you to let you know if it is going to be late of not but I did not get an email. When the train arrived there was not any seats so I had o stand for the first half of the ride. The workers were good for the first part of the train we had a lady in our car and she was helpful they would announce over the speakers what the next stop was. But in Los Angeles they changed the workers so we did not have anyone in our car and they did not announce what the next stop was until we got there. Also because there was not any workers in our car and because the train was so full they announce over the speaker that we need to go to the front of the train to get off. They said because we the customers would not move out of the way so the conductor can open the door we had to come up to were the door was open. To me this does not make sense why would it be easier for 40 people to get out one door as opposed of one person coming through to open the door and letting the people out. The only reason I am giving this a 2 star is because the first half of he trip was OK. read more

We are on Amtrak number 785 6:15 from fullerton to goleta on 9/18 land paid an extra $30 per person to be in business class . Trip started by being 45 minutes late. 2 hours into the trip there was no service at all. When we asked where the value was we were told to go down to the cafe area to get our own drinks and snack pack. When down there they said go back up to get a snack pack. Do not pay for the business class. It's definitely not worth it. We're told by other passengers, though, that if you're in "coach", you mY be standing for hours, as they regularly overbook that section. The trade-off, it seems, is potentially no seat vs. no service. They really seem not to care about customer service at all. bTW I never complain on yelp. If I could leave less than 1 star I would read more

Took Amtrak from lax to new orlens La. The food was not up to what it used to be, not good at all! Most of staff Was helpful, but on the city of new Orleans the attendant was exceptionally rude and didn't help with setting up the beds for us or others even when we asked. A shame, as we used to love the experience and travelled by Amtrak often. read more
