Set up on the train

Decided to catch the train instead of driving. My fare was only $19 from Oakland to Fairfield. Definitely worth it. I noticed many 49er fans were somehow getting to the game via this mode of transportation. Holla.

One of my favorite if not favorite Amtrak station along the Amtrak Capitol Corridor (commuter) route. Plenty of parking + easy Uber dropoff/pickup. Large, spacious indoor waiting area, security guards, snack machines, restrooms, and not far from BART/downtown Oakland. Great trainspotting location for rail fans.

Expect delays! Mom and I took Amtrak from Jack London (Oakland) to Madera and there were no less than 3 delays, the first being at Jack London, the starting point. There was some type of computer error, the train shut down and I kid you not, this caused us to leave more than one hour behind schedule. I understand some things are beyond our control but this wasn't weather related. I had a friend who worked for Amtrak no less than 10 yrs ago and I constantly heard about customers complaining due to delays. With the exception of this trip with Mom in 10/2023, I have not taken Amtrak since I was in High School and went to Texas from San Francisco with my gmo, bro and cousin. Well back then, I was super excited and looking forward to the experience but guess what I remember, we were delayed, hella delayed. It took so long to get out of San Francisco, we had to be bussed to LA where we waited hours there to even board a train. This was more than 30 years ago and for my experience to be so similar is beyond insane to me. I normally just drive to Madera but wanted a break. However, time is too precious. It was miserable. I'm glad I had Mom there but after while, the delays got to her as well. I'm struggling to find a reason why after all these years this company can't do any better. I can say the train staff was pleasant but it appeared clear to me the trains are not wiped down regularly and if they are, perhaps at the end of each shift for the next day. I don't know, perhaps I was expecting too much, this experience was a disappointment.

The ride was easy, comfortable. The train was clean. The conductor was very nice, helpful & friendly.

My son took the train from Salinas to Oakland it was only $23 That is a great deal, less than what it would cost me in gas to drive to Salinas and back, not to mention my time . So initially this seemed very convenient and cost efficient. The train left late and set back his arrival time one hour and half later..... I did receive text msg about the train departing late That was great I was able to obtain up to date arrival time by calling the 1-800 number That was very easy and I really appreciated that When I arrived at the station it was past 10pm It was pretty sketchy at first. I saw some people sleeping or camping out in parking lot garage ...... it reminded me of a scene from a scary movie where you yell at the clueless girl to run for her life ....... But once I turned the corner I saw employees and they approached me and showed me where I can wait for my sons train to arrive Their presence was very much appreciated and I felt less apprehensive about the situation The kid arrived and he said he enjoyed the train ride And I said I enjoyed NOT having to drive to pick him up lol My reviews won't always be 5 stars As a female and as a mother safety is always on the the forefront During daylight I'm sure everything will be good Try and avoid being here late hours if possible I'm % transparent I write reviews based on my own personal experience The end

This station is impeccably clean. Plenty of seats, nice and quiet. A short 2 block walk to all the Jack London Square restaurants, starbucks and a pub. The restroom was impressively clean. Probably because there is a door code on it now. You no longer need tokens for the restroom like the previous reviewer noted. Station attendants are quick and efficient, whether friendly or not depends on both their mood and yours (are you annoyed, confrontational or angry, or can you remember to say Please before asking for help?). Suffice to say, the attendants were nice and friendly when I bought my ticket.

For a room advertised as accessible and at a price of over $600 for a 4 hour ride, this level of disrepair is inexcusable. Also, the ticket was advertised as including meals, but there was no breakfast or snacks, and lunch was barely edible (reheated, stale food). Staff were kind, but the facilities and upkeep were not. For the price, this fell far short. I would not recommend booking an accessible room based on this experience. Save your money and just buy a coach ticket or better yet, just drive.

Did not use this visit. The kiosk/cafe that sells coffee/drinks was not opened, but they have vending machines for water/sodas and snacks. Did not use. The train was a little late, but we were adequately informed by the platform signage. No issues getting on the train. Coming back from Sacramento, the train was late and we didn't have time to even go into the station. It was directly to the bus to connect back to SF. Very quick boarding. And if you have larger luggage, they store it under the bus. Efficient service. Located on Horton and 59th Street.

I noticed not that many times to choose from going to Davis from Sacramento. We missed the 2 pm. We had to wait almost an hour and half until the next one. We bought our tickets then realized no one told us where we actually get onto the train. Our friend went back in..at the ticket booth the man that helped us was very nice and very helpful. He gave the kids coloring books and pins. Finally on the train it was bumper then I remembered, moved around a lot reminded me being on boat. Can not have bags or luggage out on tables or seats. I think we got called out, but we weren't sure since it was over the load speaker. We had a small bag it had food and snacks in it. We put into the over head. We went to check out the food car. So the kids could feel what it was like to walk from car to car..the food car was mostly over priced snacks. Canned, bottled drinks and packs of chips or nuts. When we arrived in Davis. They said over the loud speaker they do not stop for to long you need to get off so get ready. We couldn't open the over head to get our bag back out. It was stuck. Other passengers helped us open it, they said you really need to pull it hard. Once off the train the Davis train station and building looked so old and run down..so sad looking compared to Sacramento station. We didn't know no one would be there to buy return tickets. But they do offer more times leaving back to Sacramento. We purchased online. We had many people asking if they were in the right place while we were waiting. Davis such a cute town seems like they would clean up the station areas.

When checking in, the ladies at the counter were chatting it up while there was a line of people. Once on the train (booked lower level seats for my elderly mother and I), come to find out there were no seats available in the lower level although we paid for that seating. The people that assist on the train couldn't do enough for you, really amazing people. They checked everyone's ticket on lower level and appeared everyone had lower level seating. I called Amtrak to make a complaint and was sent to customer relations. I spoke to Kara; she stated she checked the schedule and there was absolutely no way that could've been oversold because there were open seats. I told her they had everyone on specific train cars based on the area they were going to, and was told there were no other seats on other cars as it was a holiday weekend and full. I asked her if there was any way to be compensated and she said no there was nothing she could do but send a message to corporate; no idea if she'll really do it. ‍ There was another gentleman behind me with a son that had congestive heart failure, who also purchased lower level seats, and they also had to go up to the upper level, it was a seating DISASTER!!! The icing on the cake was there are no restrooms on the upper level of the train. So when my elderly mother had to use the restroom, she had to go up and down the stairs in that tight stairwell while the train was in motion; completely unsafe and dangerous for an 89yr-old lady. So save yourself the time as it's five hours by train from Sacramento to Reno; just drive, not worth taking Amtrak. It was a terrible experience for my elderly mother and myself!!
