Within the past year, Amtrak has gone from being satisfactory to dreadful. On my two long distance train trips this year (2025), the diner was inoperable both times. The meals brought on board at stops along the way were poor quality cafeteria food. And there was no running water in one of my sleepers. All this for a $1000+ per trip fare for two people! Some of the staff could also use a refresher in guest relations. read more

I had the opportunity to take Amtrak's California Zephyr from Chicago Union Station to Reno, NV. I had booked a Roomettes sleeper for my2 night, 3 day trip. It was awesome! Had my meals delivered to my room. The food was very good and portions more than enough. My sleeper car attendants (on both trips) took great care of us and took pride in their jobs. The scenery was beautiful, what a wonderful way to see the country. We had some delays, usually due to freight train traffic on the same track. One delay had us in the mountains outside of Denver for several hours, due to a track repair). Conductor kept us informed,track crew responded very quickly and it was a delay in total comfort (feet up, beverage and book at my side and beautiful scenery). I plan on repeating the trip next June and am looking forward to it! read more

Amtrak is NOT Eurostar! The train departed Grand Junction an hour and a half late. We arrived in Denver almost 2 and a half hours late. It's clear that train travel is not a priority for congress, Amtrak or anyone else involved with the transportation system. The train cars are beat up, and about as clean as a Frontier airline plane. The bathrooms are as clean as the nastiest gas station you've been to. The station in Grand Junction is falling apart and surrounded by the unhoused. Cool train station with newer facilities and the original station still on the property needing a serious renovation. This station is a maintenance and service change of personnel for the California Zephyr. As well as an approximately 30 minute stop for passengers to get out and stretch their legs or catch a smoke break. There is a small convenience store "Daves Depot" at this station which carries most of the basics and souvenirs for the area, which you have plenty of time to get out for. The station itself is well maintained with several personnel working the train while we were there. All set against the backdrop of the grand valley canyon walls. 3.5 stars - rounded up instead of down. 00373 read more

I really don't know what the problem is. I've been attempting to purchase tickets. I can purchase a one way ticket but for some reason I cannot purchase a round trip ticket. If you want to eat crummy food, sit in a dirty seat and be hours late, Amtrak is for you. Oh and they also have an inconsistent, ever changing passenger 'update' alert system so you won't be able do make definitive changes. read more

We thought it would be fun to take a train through the Rockies from Grand Junction to Iowa. Booked a Roomette because we were traveling with a toddler. Two days before departure we got notice that they had upgrades available and we could bid for one. We did bid but didn't get it. 15 hours before departure we got a voicemail that they "had mechanical issues" with just the car we were in so we were downgraded to coach. Not upgraded to an empty bedroom we know they had... not downgraded to business class. Coach. With a toddler. For 20 hours. I tried calling. Their customer service line was "busy" and just wouldn't take calls. Eventually I got put through to add my name to a call back. Eventually they did call... and then put me on hold again. I hung up and cancelled the ticket and bought a last minute plane ticket. Then I sent them a complaint to their website. I got a notice that said due to "offensive language" they wouldn't accept my complaint. There was no offensive language. No curse words. Nothing. I wrote exactly what I put on here. I guess they just find criticism u acceptable. Seems like Amtrak needs a complete management change. I know we will never work with them again. read more

Grand Junction is one of the major stops on the California Zephyr and is a popular station for passengers traveling on the train. The service at the Grand Junction Union Station is horrible. The people there are rude as hell. I arrived 45 minutes prior to departure for Denver with 2 bags. I went to the window to check the bags and the man rudely said "you're too late to check any bags". 45 minutes and I'm too late?? That means I gotta wrestle 2 bags up the narrow stairs into the train and put them into the overhead storage. Then they bark at you like you are prisoners with things like "line up right here and go into only the last car!". No "good morning passengers" or "welcome to Amtrak". Just barking orders. Then, once you get on board, they bark more orders and threaten you with the police if you don't wear a mask all the time or you sneak a smoke in the bathrooms. Then they get you to Denver 2.5 hours late because they go through a tunnel and the door won't open to let them out and then they have to sidetrack for almost an hour so they can move their engines from the front of the train to the rear of the train to push it the last few miles into Denver. I do give them 3 stars for comfort- lots of leg room and no center seat and for the view. The view is fantastic if you are seated on the right side of the train. Oh, the food is decent but rather pricey too. read more

The staff at the GJ Amtrak station is great. They are helpful and straight forward. I have been in and out of this station several times and it all goes smoothly. It is unfortunate that the original station is closed, as it would be very elegant. Hopefully someday Amtrak with remodel it. As for now, the current station is just fine. It hosts a small snack/gift shop, and the Pufferbelly Restaurant is right next door, which is delicious! read more
