The train is just fine, the issue lies in the station staff and more specifically the blonde lady with the glasses; everytime she is in the station there are issues that she likes to nitpick and today when I had issues with the weight of my baggage she calls a friend on her personal phone and gossips about my frustration on the subject and then after finishing the call goes on to tell another passenger as he gossips outloud so the whole station can hear the issue array, saying things as I should've gotten a U-Haul and the lady agreeing until later on where she realizes that I'm a student moving out of my dorm at the end of the year. avoid her if you have anything but a bookbag she will find an issue this is not the first occurrence read more

The carbondale station is a sleepy little station but it is where you get on from St Louis if you take the van from St Louis station and are headed on the south bound train to New Orleans. They don't always have someone to open the station and that can be a problem for offboarding and onboarding. Especially if you need to use the facilities. It's caused alot of issues for people. read more

I was told she would be fine to travel. I was even shown a ticket confirming everything was in order. This wasn't a last-minute surprise -- I did my due diligence. This puppy wasn't just a pet on a casual trip. She was traveling to Michigan to begin training as a seizure alert dog for a family that needs her. This trip actually mattered. When I arrived at the station, suddenly I was told she couldn't travel. Then she could. Then she couldn't again. Then she could. The back-and-forth was ridiculous. It was like no one knew their own policies, or worse, they just didn't care. What should have been a simple boarding process turned into a stressful, drawn-out confrontation. One employee in particular made the situation significantly worse. Instead of calmly verifying the information or trying to resolve the issue professionally, she seemed determined to create obstacles. It genuinely felt like she made it her personal mission to get the puppy removed from the train. The tone, the attitude, the constant resistance -- completely unnecessary. There was no empathy, no consistency, just confrontation. It takes a special kind of coldness to try to derail a puppy's trip to become a service dog for a family in need -- especially after the company already approved the travel. The emotional stress this caused was completely avoidable. If you plan to travel with a pet on Amtrak, get everything in writing, bring proof, and prepare yourself for policies to change the moment you step up to the counter. Do not believe them over the phone when they tell you that you wont need any. There is an ogre of a woman making it her mission to derail any and all puppies traveling. Train travel is a lot of fun. Sit back, relax and let Amtrak do the driving. We traveled in a bedroom from Denver to Chicago, definitely the way to go! Again. Unreliable. There communication to passengers is absent! Pulled up to the train station this morning 10/11/2024, found the parking lot was closed for construction. Train left at 7:30 am. Pulled up around 7:10am. Left the family and bags, then had to drive about a mile away (designated area to park) ( really, a mile....no really!), then had to run back to make the train....WHAT???? No advance warning!?...Thanks for nothing Amtrak... So I get to the station, everyone is already on the train? The conductor tells me to board in the very last car...I walk to the car and walk into a garage type of car...you could had parked side by sides in it...no seat, no family...the conductor was on her cell phone playing a game or reading emails..whatever, so I come back...told her there where no seats and no people... she said, oh sorry, laughed and I boarded the correct car!!!!!!!! Carbondale Amtrak station is terrible. It's really old and outdated looking, and the workers behind the counter have consistently been rude and condescending. I make trips out of Carbondale quite often, and I know the deal. There's no reason for treating customers like crap. They also seem perpetually surprised that it's busy. It's a college town- kids want to be home for holidays. The train is sold out. Why are you bothered that people are asking you questions or God forbid sitting in your waiting room? It's disrespectful and makes people more confused because they're less likely to ask questions when the staff is pissy. Plus, half the time the doors are locked and the workers aren't even there. Then, if the doors are open and there's no train leaving soon, there's a good chance that the workers still aren't out front. I wanted to buy a ticket with cash, so naturally I went to the station. I walk in, no one is there. But I can hear either a television or a radio in the background in the back somewhere. So I gave a few "hello? hello?"s as one does. No answer. I tried knocking on the counter. No answer. Finally, I used my phone and called the number listed and stood at the counter and had to tell the man that "yes I have been here for 15 minutes I am just trying to buy a ticket" before he gave a rat's ass. Also, Amtrak is consistently late. So prepare from that. For me lately, it's usually around an hour late. Which is a bummer, since again, college town. So it makes you miss buses and have to walk around late at night. The only good things about this station is that it's inside, which is good in bad weather, and that there's vending. Of course, the pop machine stole my dollar last week, so I guess maybe that's not a perk after all. read more

Wow. I have never taken the train before....but I took a shot and went to new orleans from new york Dec 27th. A 19 HOUR TRIP! I honestly had a great time and I traveled solo. The train is a great place to meet random people and really just relax. I rarely had a phone or internet signal....so that was a little frustrating because I usually pandora or stream music...Who needs an i pod anymore? I guess it wasn't horrible I did crack open a book....and sit in the lounge car and snack and talk to cool people....stare out the window and just be completely mindless... I would definitely do it again! read more

I usually fly but I went on a group trip this summer to Chicago from Baton Rouge. Our trip down to Chicago was fairly nice although hard to sleep. The train was loud and not sturdy at all. The staff was friendly and helpful. However, on the way back, the bathrooms were incredibly dirty. Poop all over some of the seats. Others had pee everywhere. The bathrooms were not cleaned once. Also, the crew did not do a good job surveying suspicious activity. My Beats headphones were stolen out of my bag during the night and I sat by the windows. Several people reported this man going through their bags and nothing was done. The crew could have cared less that there was a thief aboard. They didn't file any report, or even offer to take a sketch of the man. On top of all this, we arrived over an hour behind schedule. Overall highly disappointed and will never travel by train again. read more

I know we need more public rail service. I am happy we have Amtrak. But the stations are dirty, trains look like they are in need of repair. And the schedules are very inconvenient. However, the people, for the most part are really helpful. read more
