Probably one of the most interesting and anticipated tours during our eight country European adventure.
The tour guide fit perfectly within the laid back chill personality sterotype within the Amsterdam society. He provided a brief history of the country then dove right into the dwindling prostitution section of the infamous Red Light District. Basically, making continual reference that the prostitutes who choose this profession do so out of pure monetary reasons and not due to passion. The tour took us by the prostitutes displayed behind the several iconic red lit windows. Prostitution is completely legal in Amsterdam which provide a life for the many women and some men, through embarrassnent, torment, ridicule and of course sex.
The second half of the tour explained the legal marijuana industry which provides millions of dollars a year for Amsterdam. Each marijuana shop is named "CoffeeShop" and is very similar to a beer bar with a menu describing the type of marijuana with an associated price based on the blend. It is lawful to use marijuana inside the shop or at any public stationary area along the street, without fear of police enforcement.
China Town and the Old Jewish sector were also shown and narrated during the tour, which I was unaware even existed in the Red Light District.
The tour guide explained that Amsterdam has unwritten guidelines stating that most everything is legal here as long as it does not impede on anothers persons Way of Life. This ideology and relaxed values built Amsterdam. Absolutely a great tour and would recommend it highly. read more
