Herring, pastries, pancakes and so much more!

This is an amazing tour , especially with Charmaine, one you can't miss!! She has so much knowledge about the food and country!! We ate and ate and drank our way through Amsterdam!! So many delicious dishes to try!! You will not go away hungry or leave the tour without feeling that you experienced the true Netherlands!!

I've done a bunch of food tours. Taipei, Munich, Toronto, Porto, Palma, Helsinki and more. The Hungry Birds tour ranks right up at the top as one of the best and most enjoyable tours I've done. Five stars! A dozen food stops across Amsterdam where we had herring, pom sandwiches, a Febo croquette, proffertjes, cookies, spicy tuna, genever, beer and just wow, wow, wow. Esther took care of us for more than four hours, meeting up and starting on time and touring our way around De Albert Cuypmarkt, brown cafes, bakeries, tokos and more. Well paced with food stops, cultural stops and rest breaks. She clearly loves her city and loves showing it off to visitors. It was a fabulous time that my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed. Tips: - Wear comfy shoes. The walk goes at a good pace and distance (but frequent breaks). - If it looks like it might rain, bring an umbrella. The tour goes on. - Bring a small backpack or bag as you might want to purchase something here or there. - Charge your phone/camera. - BE HUNGRY. There will be a TON of food. Most important? Have an open mind. Yes, there's some interesting stuff here. Try it, try it, try it! Some of these foods are only here in Amsterdam and isn't that why you're on a food tour? Amazing introduction to Dutch, Indonesian and Surinamese food! My boyfriend is Dutch and we went on this tour to introduce me to Dutch food. Our guide Esther-Hanna took us to a bunch of different places around De Pijp to eat the food and see the neighborhood. She has connections with all the businesses so we never had to wait in line. We definitely got our money's worth with the tour (not only of the food, but also the neighborhood and its history) and the food (we ate SOOO much; do not eat breakfast before going on this tour). We loved it and we'll recommend this tour to everyone we know when they visit Amsterdam!

Today I had the "treat" of an eating tour with Rachael of Hungry Bird! Do not miss the fabulous fun time to learn about local restaurants and have very, very generous samplings of the foods of Amsterdam with a few drink specialties mixed in. Go with a hungry stomach because there is much delicious fare to sample! The groups are small... mine only had 9 since I was the odd 1 but no fear alone or with a group or a couple Rachael will take time to explain everything and answer all questions... and suggest any number of restaurants to go to while in Amsterdam... like the city... warm, welcoming, joyous! Enjoy as I did from start to finish!!

The Hungry Birds tour is 1) not about traditional Dutch food, but about the best street food in Amsterdam, from all over the world 2) for tourists and foodies living in Amsterdam First of all, Zosia our friendly tour guide wisely provided us each with a bottle of water. Then we did a small introduction round to break the ice. Since we were a group of expats already living in Amsterdam, we skipped Febo and friets. Instead, we got to try amongst others: super tasty indonesian food bits, the most amazing savoury pies, de lekkerste vers bereide stroopwafel van de stad (of heel Nederland - according to Zosia), mouth-watering japanese pancake and dé uber-chocolate-cookie. The food stops were spiced up with amusing stories around the respective cuisine or the shop/stall owner(s). If you're into food and into Amsterdam but not a local, then this tour is a must!

Alerting all foodies!!! Come one come all!! I cannot recommend this tour enough!!! Our guide Rachel (also on the thirsty bird tour!) was an amazing resource of information and energy! It literally felt like meeting up with a group of local friends and letting them take you around to their personal favorite places as a local! Step by step we learned and experienced more of the Dutch food scene. Very different from the more common Belgian food scene! Every location was within steps of each other and we were pretty full halfway through so make sure you come hungry and armed with a water bottle (can also buy on the way) and comfy walking shoes! And the best part is at the end of the amazing tour, they break out a map and we can ask them any question from restaurants to sites and they are the perfect open book to the city as a local!! Loved this tour and so glad I made it out first full day in Amsterdam! If you are on the fence about it, book it if... 1. You love food and new experiences 2. You have an open mind 3. You don't mind strolling through fabulous places for a few hours 4. You don't know REAL Dutch food! Book it! You are welcome.

I just took my sister on the same tour almost 5 yrs later. We had Charmaine who was so lovely and entertaining. The value and experience has not diminished, my sister loved it!. This is a MUST for any trip to Amsterdam.

As they say on their website, "Oh my foodness! Where do we even start?". This was easily the best part of our Amsterdam trip (and maybe the best part of our wider Europe trip). Esther-Hanna graciously accepted our very last-minute request for a private breakfast walking tour and we had a blast eating, talking and learning. We stopped at several awesome locations serving a variety of local Dutch breakfast items, including: - A wonderful bakery for some bread, cheese, cookies and hot cocoa. - A trendy coffee spot. - A bustling outdoor market. - A cute little coffee shop for local macaroons. - A cozy tea and yogurt shop. Every stop was not only delicious but everywhere we went the staff was so welcoming and friendly, we felt right at home. In between stops, Esther-Hanna taught us more about Dutch history and culture than I would have ever had the discipline to learn on my own. She is incredibly knowledgeable about her culture and speaks absolutely perfect English. I can't wait to come back to Amsterdam and try one of the other tours Hungry Birds offers, including the bicycle tour!

We had a great first day in Amsterdam on our food tour with Zosia! She was a wonderful host. I especially liked that the places that we went to were smaller more established places. Deeeelicious!

This was an amazing tour that introduced me to more of the Dutch culture and food. Our guide, Esther, was very knowledgeable and pleasant. She met the group at an agreed upon location and brought us all some bottled water, how thoughtful! The tour lasted about 4 hrs and we covered a little over 2 kilometers at an easy pace. Altogether we made about 10 stops to outstanding eateries that I would have never discovered on my own. The highlight was the cheese stop and it was so worth it, that several people wanted more. It's definitely good value for the money and a must do for anyone visiting Amsterdam.

I cannot think of a better way to spend a drizzling Sunday afternoon than taking a culinary walk…read morewith friends. The organizers of WijnSpijs had the brilliant idea to line up 7 great restaurants, cafés and bars to spoil 400 guests between 12.00 to 17.00 with their best wine paired with a small dish. Et voilà: the first culinaire wandeling - Pijp edition was born! So you call up your friends, check who's in, choose the order in which you want to visit the different places and buy your tickets (don't underestimate this last step, the event was sold out quite quickly). There's no guide that's gonna take you by the hand and lead you from one spot to the other. Also the time management is totally up to you. We didn't spend so much time in the first two places since we had to find our own schedule. The downside of the concept is that it might feel quite ongezellig having to leave when you're just about to getting cozy. But every new visit is exciting. You don't know what wine and what dish you're gonna get beforehand, so you get a lot of surprises. Most places were able to serve the wine and food in a decent time. Unfortunately we had a half an hour wait at the bar of Boca's. We didn't even get a table. Another group of 5 guests who arrived after us however did and even got their food before us. We really had to earn these hamburgers. Also Bar Americano as our last stop was rather disappointing. What they called risotto was just not. It was a rice dish with white asparagus. And it looked funny after the waitress gave it a final touch by generously grating pecorino cheese over the plates and table cloth. All the other places convinced me with their delicious dishes and I also enjoyed most of the wines. The one they served at Bar Barrique was everyone's favourite: Cuvée Licorne by Domaine des Aspras. These winemakers go the extra mile to give it a hint of cognac. So do I have to be hard-drinking to attend this tour?, I hear you asking. It's definitely an advantage. Although the wines are paired with food you might get a little tipsy towards the end.

I figured it would be a good orientation and we'd have some flexibility if our plans changed late. We ended up sleeping later than planned on our first full day in Amsterdam (thanks, jet-lag). We did, however, manage to arrive at the rendezvous point (the monument in Dam Plaza) at least 5 minutes before tour time (10:30 a.m.). There were about 3 tour groups assembling at the same time. The company divided us up among appropriate guides and the tours began. Our guide was Paul Bierman. He was a lifelong resident of Amsterdam and had the associated level of knowledge about things. The tours are somewhat free form, and can focus on whatever the group likes - architecture, history, etc. Our group wasn't super decisive so we got a broad overview (which was fine). Paul walked us around the city center pointing out old churches, the first stock exchange, whimsical local canal lore, canal-side houseboats (one of which was a dedicated cat sanctuary), etc. It was a bit of a potpourri of local facts and trivia but everyone enjoyed it. We ended up back near the starting point close to 2 hours later. Overall, I thought this was a good introduction to the central city. It is a good option for a first-time visitor's first day in Amsterdam.
